Okay, follow up. - None of these characters were POC, in reality. But Hamilton was a poor immigrant of Scottish heritage who grew up in the Caribbean, so that made him a kind of outsider vs a lot of the others who were born in the colonies and whose families came from England. - Really, men having affairs back then wasn't considered *that* big of a deal in comparison to what he was actually accused of (basically cheating the stock market, embezzlement, etc). It more humiliated his wife and his mistress than brought any real shame to him. Just was considered rather callous and ridiculous of him to drag his dirty laundry out into public. But it did clear his name of the legal accusations. - He never had any romantic connections to Angelica, but they were close and wrote to each other often. - Hamilton actually had like 8 kids - Pretty much all the founding fathers fought in the revolutionary war in some capacity save for the older chaps like Franklin, or Thomas Jefferson who was off in France. George Washington was a general and led battles, etc. - King George III was batshit. The drool is partially from singing technique and also a partial nod to his foaming at the mouth - Lafayette is the reason we have a bunch of streets and counties and towns and such named Lafayette. He fought in the revolution with us, and is one of the few people historically who could ever get George Washington to smile. - The reason Eliza is in black when she goes in to Philip's death scene is because she also just lost Peggy

Just to add a bit more to this, Jefferson did participate indirectly in the war as well before heading to France as ambassador. He was a colonel in the Albemarle County Militia when the war began and became the commander-in-chief of the Virginia militia when elected governor of Virginia in 1779. While he did not fight in any battles as a soldier, he did actively participate in recruiting soldiers to reinforce the Continental Army before taking his post in France in 1784. While not having a military rank or experience, John Adams likewise assisted in building up the Continental Army before heading off to his own overseas diplomatic missions. However, as far as I know Washington and Hamilton were the only two of the "classic" Founding Fathers that participated directly in the fighting.

Some more follow-up trivia to this: - After the death of Philip, Hamiltons (oldest?) daughter lost her mind and died not long after, as she was very close to Philip - George Washington had slaves as well, and it was LaFayette who talked to him about the immorality of enslaving another human like that, causing Washington to change his mind on it. - That said, Washington and LaFayette were incredibly close, almost to a father-son level. - The Duel between Philip and George Eacker (sp?) didn't go like this at all. During the duel neither man was willing to fire at the other, and according to witnesses almost a minute passed before they raised their pistols towards one another, when Philip was shot down. Eacker and Hamilton had a strained but professional relationship after this, but Hamilton did not bear him a grudge, or not enought to cut ties with him or challenge him. - Hercules Mulligan wasn't solely responsible for smuggling the British plans. He had a personal slave/assistant who'se name is lost in history, that he used to smuggle the info out. That slave in turn passed on the information to Washington's men. (edit) one last bit, the actress who plays Angelica (the elder sister), according to the other members, she is the only person who NEVER flubbed a line, not ever, during any of the recordings or performances

@@michelvanderlinden8363 the Hamilton’s oldest daughter, Angelica (obviously named after her Aunt) died in 1857, not shortly after Phillip died. She did suffer a complete mental break after Phillip’s death, causing her to be cared for by her mother and then later by a Dr. McDonald. She lived until the age of 72, out living her very long lived mother by 3 years.

I did a ton of research into the women of early American history a long, long time ago and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton was one of my favorites because of the influence she had during and after Alexander’s death. The women in that time period are extremely interesting and were very influential during the Revolution and in the shaping of the country. Eliza, Angelica, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison, Martha Washington and so many others have very interesting stories to tell!!

The actress who plays Eliza says the gasp at the end had different motives behind it each night (depending on what she was feeling). Sometimes the gasp was Eliza dying at the age of 97 and Alexander showing her the glory of heaven and God and all the angels, which makes a lot of sense given the lyrics leading up to it. Other times it was Lin Manuel Miranda breaking the fourth wall and showing Eliza Hamilton the audience - that her story was indeed told and all her efforts to preserve Alexander's legacy weren't in vain.

Oh DEFINITELY rewatch with subtitles on 🤣 This is legit the Broadway show with the most words crammed into it in history.

Apparently Lin Manuel Miranda wanted everyone's appearance from the neck up to be modern and from the neck down to be period accurate. That's why we get Hercules Mulligan wearing a beanie, Lafayette's, Hamilton's, and John's hair in a ponytail and Maria wearing bright red lipstick. It's one of the things they did to really get across that this musical is the story of America then being told by America today

According to Johnathan Groff, he performed a show with Beyoncé in the audience. She later came backstage and told him she was going to use his walk as the king. The reason he walked like that was to balance the crown and everything which is not super light.

The Frozen clip you cut to a lot, Kristoff: "I'm gonna tell him," is voiced by the actor playing King George III in this play.

You said you wondered how they got the shots. Hamilton was filmed by Disney 3 separate times. 2 times in front of live audiences and a 3rd time without an audience. They then edited the performance together choosing the audio and best shots. You can see this the most in the song Satisfied. There are flowers on Angelica’s dress that disappear and reappear throughout the song.

"Why you gotta mess with a married woman, bro. I hate when people do that." To be fair, back then there were a lot of arranged marriages, and it was REALLY hard to get a divorce authorized, even if neither spouse was happy.

My son's name is Alexander Hamilton. I used to always say, like the $10 bill when making appointments. Now he/we say like the musical.

Aiming a pistol at the sky is called throwing away your shot in a dual. It's basically saying it shouldn't have gone this far and the fight ends here. Many dual ended that way. A lot is accurate to what happened but Angelica and Alexander's relationship was played up all I've read is that they maintained a close friendship.

I gotta be honest, at first I was like “how is he going to react to a musical while editing out all the songs?”, but yea you definitely proved how well you can edit. That was perfect! Im definitely going to think twice before questioning your judgment again.

This is why Miranda's writing is so genius, because, in the end, Hamilton did throw away his shot in the duel and likewise Burr didn't wait for it when he shot him.

There are a lot of things that you picked up on that most people don't in their first watch and I'm really impressed. Like you highlighting the use of the word "unimaginable" in 'It's Quiet Uptown'. The reason for that word choice is that a child who loses their parents has a word (orphan), a parent who loses their spouse has a word (widow) but there is no word for a parent who loses their child because no one ever expects to be burying their child. It's unimaginable

Ahhh I'm so glad you finally did this one!! So follow up, Eliza's gasp at the end has been left up to each actress' interpretation, but the 2 main theories are either: 1. Eliza has died and is seeing Alexander again Or 2. That Eliza is seeing the audience and realising that after all her work, Alex's story is finally being told ❤️

The Bullet is the first person to die in the play, after that she is like a augur for death and the physical interpretation of a Bullet And she is played by Ariana Debose in the movie

Concerning why Burr always seems to be one step behind Hamilton, part of it is just poetic license for the musical, but Burr did struggle to advance politically. A big part of the problem was that, as the musical suggests, Burr tended to put his own self-interest before the common good, a practice that often put him at odds with the other leading political figures of his time, especially Hamilton, Jefferson, and Madison. The musical also gets it right in that Hamilton chose to throw his substantial support behind Jefferson instead of Burr because even though he and Jefferson were bitter rivals, he believed Jefferson had the country's best interests at heart while he considered Burr to be a self-centered, self-serving opportunist. You asked why Hamilton had so much influence? The Federalist Party pretty much formed around Hamilton as a result of his rivalry with Jefferson when they were both in Washington's Cabinet, making him essentially its founder and one of its most influential figures even with the fallout from his affair.

Fun fact: the actor playing King George was also the voice of Kristoff in Frozen.

Some mentioned here but the shooting in the air was an honorable way to end duel challenges as actually participating in duels was illegal. It’s why Hamilton tells his son that his opponent will “follow suit (fire in the air) if he’s truly a man of honor.” As for Burr, through the play you hear Hamilton tell him many times that he should speak up more, but Burr never openly spoke out about his beliefs/position. I believe the two were friendly rivals despite their different views.

You asked what parts were not true.. Well first Angelica did have brothers and she was already married when she met Hamilton. There is no evidence that they were in love with her. 2nd Hamilton’s affair was a set up. She met him at a convention not at his house. 3rd It’s rumored that Hamilton had a sexual relationship with Lauren’s. Hamilton is on the $10.00 bill. King George performances total less than 10 minutes.

It took me several times to watch, and listen, to grasp everything in this show, definitely download that whole playlist, and rewatch with subtitles! You’ll see more of the stage work and here a lot more every time.

I remember seeing a historic reenactment at Virginia Beach and Adams was like “damn Hamilton gets a broadway musical raking in millions and all I got was beer from my cousin and a $2 bill.”

The ending where Eliza gasp is a meaning on how many people came to see her and husbands show the song is about telling her story and this is a way of her telling it and she’s shocked how many people were listening

Lin started with a show called "In The Heights", which won him some Tony awards. He also once did the intro song to Hamilton as a work in progress at the White House while Obama was in the office. It's on KZread - it's great to watch everyone's reactions.

I was definitely shaking at my head of some of your history knowledge but we learn. The 2nd act definitely does not hit the same as the 1st act the first few times, but after hearing it over and over it grows on you and you find your favs like "Washington on Your Side, The Reynolds Pamphlet, Your Obedient Servant". The first song that drew me into the whole musical was "Wait for It"

So a little history on one of my faves, The Marquis de Lafayette (America's favorite Fighting frenchman) He was an orphan but still one of the richest men in France (one of the most powerful families) When he was 13 he became a Musketeer (yes. THOSE musketeers.) When he heard about the American Revolution he came running to the US basically begging Congress to allow him to fight the British. He was enamored with the American's fight for liberty. (could also have just a LITTLE to do with his father being killed fighting the English). But turns out he was an excellent general even though he was just a kid (19). When George Washington and Lafayette met it was like love at first sight. (Not in a homosexual way) Lafayette was a 19 year old kid who's father died when he was practically a baby meeting a tall, imposing, famous general (Washington) who was the epitome of elegance and leadership, basically everything Layfayette could have imagined/wanted in a father. Washington had no biological children, and this sharp, courageous, eager kid was everything Washington would have imagined in a perfect son. So they immediately developed a close father-son bond that lasted Washington's lifetime. Lafayette even named his own first son "Georges Washington de La Fayette" so yeah, they were close. During the Revolution, Lafayette used his own money and influence in France to fund help for the Americans. We pretty much wouldn't have won the war without France's help, in large part due to Lafayette. So that's why his name is on more streets, towns, etc, than any other foreign person. Basically I think he was a pretty cool dude. And how amazing is Dayveed Diggs, who plays Lafayette in Act 1 (his rap I think holds the record for most words in a minute, all with a French accent!) And then he (Diggs) undoes his ponytail, puts on a super fly coat to play Jefferson in Act 2. He's got so much swag, in both parts! Love him. I recommend watching at least one more time, with captions, to get all the words and so much more I'm sure you'll catch. In part 1 three of Hamilton's closest friends were Lafayette, Hercules Mulligan, and John Laurens (whose death he reads about near the end of act 1) those same actors became Jefferson, Madison, and Hamilton's son in Act 2. Also Eliza's younger sister "Peggy" became Mrs. Reynolds, the woman Hamilton has an affair with. The reason they have Eliza already dressed in black when she came to her dying son is to signify (without mentioning it) that she had just lost her younger sister Peggy a few months earlier. maybe not just symbology either, back in the day people often were "in mourning" for months, wearing only black, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. Anyway lol.

I second this. This whole show is filled with stuff that can be missed. It’s an interpretive show and there’s so much going on. Plus, a lot of the real lyrics/lines are actually quotes from the real people.

Not sure if anyone pointed out, but you had said you didn’t believe that George Washington was fighting in the war but in reality Washington was the general of the American army at the time and that’s part of the reason he was a universal choice as president, because everyone who fought loved him and he is a big reason for the US even existing Edit: also Lafayette was the French military commander that came to America’s aid during the war. He joined up super early and he was a really good leader. He also helped secure French aid to the states and in getting France to send their navy to fight the British

So busy listening to the songs you have no idea what the story is? That... Is probably the most paradoxical thing I have ever heard. It's a musical. Listening to the songs should tell you the story perfectly fine, especially with one like Hamilton where it's ALL song. I don't know if I should laugh at that or not. It sounds like a joke, but it also sounds like a serious problem that ought to be looked into, lol.

Angelica and Alex, from what we know, never had any sort of relations. They were a bit flirty and bickered but I think that was just their personalities tbh. Alex respected her and most of their letters were similar to letter you'd send a business partner tbh, like he would ask advice or her opinion on things because she was very intelligent. From what I've seen most who met both of them said they were quite similar in terms of personality actually. Alex did cheat on Eliza tho and Eliza quite literally took herself out of the narrative, there isn't much on how she reacted or what she said about what Alex did so Lin made "First Burn" but then it became the version it is now just "Burn" which I believe fits her well (even tho I love First burn!)

31:55 This was really common in duels. It was called "deloping", or "throwing away your shot", hence the wordplay in the songs. Since pistols of the time were quite inaccurate, the point of a duel wasn't typically to kill the other person (though it could be) but rather to restore your own honor by standing bravely in the face of potential death. Deliberately missing was seen as an honorable way to avoid murder, while still satisfying the honor culture requirements by standing still to receive your opponent's shot. Historically, Hamilton left prepared remarks that he intended to reserve his fire - meaning not shoot at all - and his second confirmed that desire. This was more controversial, but followed the same idea. For some perspective, Hamilton was in several duels throughout his life, but never even injured until the fateful Burr duel.

The gasp at the end was her realizing her story is being told!! In the end “Hamilton” was not only about Alexander but more so what Eliza did after his death

Les Miserable is my favorite musical. I have a daughter named after one of the characters if that tells you anything. BUT, halfway through Hamilton the first viewing I text my daughter to tell her this was giving less Miz a run for the money. The kids and I saw Hamilton on Broadway this spring. It is even better live. That Tommy Wissuau comment made me lol.

Lin got his start with In The Heights, his first Broadway show, about a Latino neighborhood in New York. He worked on it for years, till he finally got it to Broadway. He starred in it on Broadway, but when they made the movie, they cast Anthony Ramos, who played Laurens and Philip in this production. None of the real people were African American.

Guns and ships is one of the best songs. Look at the song again with lyrics. It's amazing.

Hamilton starts reading from the farewell address, then he gradually fades as Washington takes the scene. Beautifully written

Great reaction! Everyone watched at least three times. Once with caption 2nd to look at characters and 3rd for the background. And for me, I lost count 😂😂 Third song traditionally is the “Want” song. It tells exactly what the musical will be about. 😉

I've never seen anyone watch Hamilton and miss the whole premise so badly.

When Hamilton meets his buddies in the bar at the beginning, the change of pace was done to show off Hamilton's intellect. Everyone else was old school and very deliberate in their pacing, but when Hamilton starts he sets a higher tempo. It impresses his new friends and the audience. Then later when Lafayette goes so much quicker when addressing Washington, it is to show his brilliance, specifically in war.

This popped up on my feed and had to watch. Loved seeing your reaction. I recommend watching it again and paying more attention to the storyline. This entire soundtrack is amazing!!

One of Burr's first songs is "Wait for It," which explains his whole character. He steps back and waits for things to play out instead of jumping in head first, like Hamilton. Burr moves around the stage in arcs while Hamilton's moves are straight lines. In a note of where he ended up after the musical, Burr also committed treason and tried to create his own country out of land he took from Mexico. "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" runs through the whole musical. Burr lives, Hamilton dies, and ultimately it's Eliza who tells the story. If you watch it again, definitely put on subtitles so you don't miss lyrics.

Firstly, great editing. I hope you get a chance to rewatch on your own with the subtitles to catch some of things you asked about, and in your own time. (I first listened over several days.) Secondly, you should definitely check out Hairspray! It's funny but also hits a few serious topics (racism, fat-shaming). The music is amazing, and there's not nearly as much as in Hamilton, so hopefully easier to edit. But honestly, even if you don't record it, I hope you watch it. It's one of my favorite musicals.

Fun fact: the man who played the king voiced kristoff in frozen(idk how to spell his Another fun fact: firing your gun in the air meant you never wanted to be there in the first place. You just wanted to end the war you were in with that person. Aiming towards the sky meant you never wanted to agree to the duel. And yes, there were ten rules to the duel, number ten being count from one to ten and then fire at the oppressor.

The Reynolds Pamphlet was a real thing, he published it to thoroughly explain his affair thus proving his innocence about stealing from the colonies. He figured he's going to expose himself before James Reynold's did. I remember when I first heard about it, then saw Lin's episode of Drunk History, I was like ''so it never occured to him that Maria and James were in cahoots to get money from him since he WAS the secretary of the treasury?'' Also it was more like a novel lenght not a pamplet

Apparently the ending is for your own interpretation of what that gasp of breath was for. Some say it’s because she saw Hamiltons face when she passed away and others say it’s because she realises this story is her family’s story being Hamilton rather than Alexander Hamilton.

The songs are telling you the story. I started watching you in the middle of the night. The first one was your Godfather reaction and I've been stuck on your page all day. Can't thank you enough!!

Gotta say Mello, that story about you putting a belt in your pants to pretend you were one of the "Cats" is so freaking adorable XD......also I may or may not have done the same damn thing when watching Cats on vhs....while attempting to dance.

I have a few favorites when it comes to Hamilton like My Shot, You'll Be Back, Helpless, Satisfied, What'd I Miss, and Washington on your Side. I think the story is wild but they olayed it well. And to answer your earlier question: i think its possible to love 2 people at the same time but its different kinds of loves. Me personally, I cannot and will not do two at one time. I'm not built that way. I'm glad to see you watched the play. I was enamored my first time watching it.

I highly recommend The Greatest Showman. The story itself is highly fictionalized of the real person The movie makes him seem like a good guy but in reality he was trash but it has some of the best music I’ve ever heard in a musical movie. Also in real life Hamilton was in a number of duels and the trick of aiming the pistol at the sky worked for all but the one to my knowledge.

Oh my god the cats story had me. I was in tears 🤣🤣🤣 Also that dog is the cutest dog ever. Give her so many pets and treats from me.

It's vaguely hinted at in the lyrics, but the main reason why America didn't help with the French Revolution is because their alliance was actually with the French king. King Louis XVI gave military and financial support to the Americans during the Revolutionary War (mostly as a way to weaken the British). Unfortunately for Louis, a lot of French troops took those revolutionary ideas home, and then they overthrew and executed him. So the new American government had an alliance with the dead king, but not with the revolutionary forces that opposed him.

Exactly plus like Washington said in the play “it’s a little disquieting” meaning I think he thought the Americans would get the same guillotine ideas about the bourgeoisie, I mean the peasants really did try to kill *everyone* and I’m sure it did get scary, I mean they even tried to kill Lafayette so he was *not* fine as Hamilton guessed lol

@@V_4_Versace Yep. The French Revolution was a bloodbath, and not just for the aristocracy. Whichever side you picked, they could be the next ones on the chopping block.

I genuinely love your reaction and so hype you did this one !! Hope you can also do “In the heights” another Lin Manuel masterpiece in my opinion! It’s really good, it’s a musical but filmed like a movie, like hairspray

This is my favorite musical, followed by Rent. I had a chance to see both live and loved them even more. As far as my favorite song from Hamilton, it has to be Satisfied followed by all of Leslie Odom Jr's songs.

My sister used to watch that Cats musical constantly as a kid too. No judgements here from the Musical Nerds crowd! Lin Manuel Miranda's first musical is called In the Heights, and they made a movie of that one that came out last year, and is totally worth the watch. Also totally worth watching with subtitles on because of how fast the lyrics go by, and the fact that some of it is in Spanish

When she gasps at the end, I always thought she was seeing the audience and realizing that his story was being told, just like she always wanted.

the way he started talking about the songs not hitting as hard during room where it happens and then he gets on board with it once he realizes that it’s one of the best songs in the show both musically and story-wise was so funny lol (also i used to have a cat named tinkerbell!! give tinkerbell the dog some pats for me aww)

the gasp at the end it so symbolize eliza seeing the world learning her story and knowing people konw her story.
