Interesting tidbit that during Election of 1800, Hamilton is still singing "It's quiet uptown" because he's still in mourning, but the world is not letting him be alone in his thoughts.

The reason they portrayed Hamilton as old as he seemed in the latter half of the second act was because his son's death literally took many years off his life during his final years in real life.

Fun fact: the line "Best of wives and best of women" was something Alexander actually wrote to Eliza in his last letter to her, in case he were to lose the duel! He really did have a way with words, lol

That last song is so heartbreaking, Eliza's basically begging Hamilton to go back to sleep and she doesn't even know he's going to duel, just when they'd gotten back together basically, in the same bed again, and it's instantly taken away

I agree that the 'room where it happens' callback is probably the best callback here. You can hear it in the trembling strings and see it in the red lighting, the pure anger and rage in Burr, the way he sings "You've kept me from the room where it happens, FOR THE LAST TIME." The last two songs really bring the show to an amazing finish.

There's also a sort of a closing door motif throughout the play with Washington telling Burr to "Close the door on your way out," Hamilton closing a door to him when he goes to make his treasury deal with Jefferson, and Jefferson closing one behind him after he says "when you see Hamilton, thank him for the endorsement." Each of those is a time he was shut out of "the room where it happens" thanks to Hamilton. "The Room Where it Happens" song was a turning point for Burr where he decided to stop waiting for what he wanted and to actively chase it... but even after making an effort in the election of 1800 he lost what he wanted thanks to Hamilton. THAT was the last straw for him.

Something interesting in The Election of 1800 is that Jefferson seems to be ready to take a blow because he thought Hamilton would vote for Burr while Burr himself is smiling with an actual smile because he also thought Hamilton would vote for him. In Your Obedient Servant when Burr insults Hamilton it's the only time he actually means it. 2 of the 3 the other times he said it, it was to note how far Alexander came. Specifically in: Alexander Hamilton: "Grow up to be a hero and a scholar?" A Winter's Ball: "Go on and on. Grow into more of a phenomenon?" The Adams Administration: He insulted Hamilton but nothing too offensive. He was mostly annoyed with him not directly angry

Unlike in prior instances of the "Burr insults Hamilton" motif, this one is not in his role as the narrator, but fully in-character.

Historical context here: this is probably the most misconstrued part of the musical historically. In the election of 1800, Jefferson and Burr were essentially on the same ticket because Jefferson thought that Burr would bring in Democratic-Republican votes while Jefferson would bring southern votes leading to victory. However, due to an issue with one of the electors, they tied. Under the Constitution at the time, the House of Representatives had to break the tie. Each state got one vote and you had to win the majority of states. Neither of them got a majority of the states 35 times! The issue were the Federalists who didn’t know who to vote for since the Federalist candidates had already lost; therefore, they asked the leader of their party - Alexander Hamilton - who they should vote for. Hamilton said to vote for Jefferson because he had stated what he stood for where Burr hadn’t. He saw Jefferson as less dangerous for this reason. When the House voted for a 36th time, Jefferson won. Burr wasn’t mad about losing because that was the original intention anyway. However, since this was a huge fiasco, the 12th Amendment would be passed to prevent this from happening again. In 1804, Jefferson didn’t need Burr to win re-election so Burr was dumped. So, Burr decided to run for New York Governor. At a party, Hamilton essentially said that Burr was not fit for the reigns of government and was dangerous to the government. When Burr heard about this he confronted Hamilton to “take it back.” Hamilton said he couldn’t take it back because Burr was not specific enough and a few other technicalities. This is what led to the duel. The original version of “Your Obedient Servant” uses many parts of the letters between the two leading up to the duel. You should totally react to the deleted songs after you finish the last two songs!

Actually, Hamilton didn't say vote for Jefferson, he said DON'T vote for Burr. And they didn't ask him. He went on a letter writing campaign and bombarded the electors with info about how Burr was a bad choice. In the end most of the Federalists abstained which led to Jefferson winning "in a landslide" of electoral votes.

And Hamilton was right. The play actually really softened Burr's true historical character to make him more relatable. In fact, he was a sleazy politician at the very least, who got out of murder and treason charges on basically technicalities.

@@tharjin0629 Yeah, basically the way it worked at the time was you cast two votes for president and the person with a majority of votes became the President and the runner up became the Vice President. The federalists and anti-federalists (Democratic-Republicans) figured out that if they only had one person in the running, then they'd have a hostile VP. The party wanted both top spots so ran Jefferson and Burr as President and VP. But when the votes were counted, there was an equal number of electoral votes for each, and so it came to Congress to decide whether the President would be Burr or Jefferson. There were still many Federalists in congress and Hamilton used his influence to ensure they didn't pick Burr. Burr, meanwhile, was openly campaigning for the job despite previously being billed as the VP. VP at the time was little more than a ceremonial position with only the power to break a Senate tie. VP was a dead-end job for first losers. Jefferson was angry at Burr for campaigning against him, and so basically cut him out of all actual government work and cabinet meetings, which infuriated Burr. Burr, as we know, then went out and killed Hamilton in a duel, which effectively ended his political career. He then went out west and started some manner of conspiracy that got him put on trial for treason. It was totally unclear what he was up to over there and the man who ratted Burr out turned out to have been spying for the Spanish government for YEARS. (Though we didn't find definitive proof of that until decades after his death.) Burr was acquitted and moved to England to get away from the mess he'd made of his reputation but eventually returned to practice law in the US.

Wow I didn’t know any of this! Thanks for the information, I really want to dive into the reality behind the stories in the show. I think a lot of people take these shows based on historical events to be like a documentary but in order to fit things into a compelling story a lot either has to be switched up or omitted or fudged

I love how Burr writes a letter to Hamilton... and Hamilton's reply comes in a lot of shets. Very in character for him.

I also think that Hamilton looks so despondent when people are asking for his endorsement because he's still focused on Phillilp's death and honestly just doesn't give a shit about the election. Him repeating "It's quiet uptown" reflects his mindset, that's where his focus is.

History kinda collides with Hamilton here. The duel was actually over a governor election in 1801. Philip died in 1801. The race was in 1800. It was a sacrifice made for plot. It was absolutely the right choice but it is an interesting contrast. And according to some sources, George Eaker did stop when Philip raised his gun. He waited a little while and then raised it again when Philip put his hand down. Still a jerk move but not as ruthless as the musical portrayal.

EXACTLY. I am an unapologetic Burr supporter, and it is so frustrating to me to see all the people defending Alex's refusal to apologize because Burr didn't specify which slandering he was demanding a apology for. Like, if you're such an asshole that you have to ask which shitty thing you said about someone is the reason they are calling you out, that's ridiculous. It also aggravates me that for the entire show, leading up to "Schuyler Defeated", Hamilton is constantly criticizing Burr for not pursuing what he wants, but then when Burr takes Phillip Schuyler's seat in the senate, Alex acts like Burr did something outrageous, when all he did was exactly what Alex pushed him to do, pursue his aspirations. For Alex to destroy Burr's career in "The Election of 1800" is pathetic, considering Burr was being 100% honest when he said, "I learned that from you." Alexander foolishly ran his mouth off, and we all know what happens to fools who run their mouths off.

There is a deleted song where Burr sings to his eldest daughter about her mother that just died and then Hamilton in the original Your Obedient Servant delivers something like "Yo, You know what? I don't like your tone, lay it at my feet, I'll kick it down below, I'm sorry if your life is dificult without your wife, you'll have to be more specific, though" 😂

To my understanding, Alexander wouldnt have won an election. The reason why jefferson won (If I recall) is because majority of the federalists hadnt voted and wouldnt until they heard hamiltons choice. There were enough federalists for a landslide victory in either direction, but not enough to stand on their own.

I’m a little late, but Your Obedient Servant is one of my favorite songs in the musical, and I’ve gotta say something about it. Obviously we have the callback to burrs original narration, which is absolutely amazing. Then we have the callback to Room Where It Happens, with burr essentially blaming Hamilton for everything up to this point. Hamilton’s first return letter to burr is kind of vague. Once again, he’s behaving very “talk less”. He says “even if I said what you think I said…” He’s not admitting to anything. He also takes a cut at the fact that burr didn’t win by addressing the letter “Mr. Vice President”. Then, we have the fact that Hamilton refuses to apologize. Callback to Blow Us All Away: “He refused to apologize. We had to let the peace talk cease.” Hamilton is Burr’s Eaker. “I won’t apologize because it’s true.” Aaaaaand this last one makes me sad: when burr is challenging Hamilton to the duel, he’s talking exactly on beat. “Weehawken. Dawn. Guns drawn.” Hamilton hesitates. He answers after the beat. It seems as though he doesn’t want to…. and oh great I’m crying again 😭😭😭

Burr gave Alex every opportunity to avoid bloodshed, and instead of doing the one thing that would reach some semblance of peace, he not only shows up to the duel, but wears his glasses, which would cause anybody to think that he is wearing them to have a better aim. Burr may have pulled the trigger, but Alex loaded the gun and cocked it.

10:03 I have been waiting to mention this. It is the same melody as the opening for "Alexander Hamilton", but with one big difference. In the other times you hear it, the strings create the sound of a squeaky door opening. Here, we hear a thud. The closing of either Hamilton's life, or Burr's career, which only happened because of Alex, both for the endorsement, and for the fact that Burr decided to for once in his life, chase what he wants.

You could check out Six: The Musical after youre done with Hamilton, its kinda similar in the sense that it takes historical people and gives them a modern sound track. In Six's case its when someone goes "What if the wives of Henry VIII wrote a diss album?" Its really good and has 10 "main" songs and 5 "extra songs" on the album, plus there are a whole lot of fan made animatics that can give you some amazing visuals.

The Election of 1800 strays really far from actual history. It's worth a Google to see how they really got to "let's duel" ☺️ And I'd add that Burrs life story is actually crazy interesting, both before and after the duel, and he's a much more complicated character than the play shows, obviously. Also, "best of wives and best of women" is how Alexander addressed her in the letter he was writing in that scene to leave for her 😭

One of the interesting tidbits that I love is when Philip and Eliza are singing around the piano, they are singing 1-10 in French but Philip keeps changing the melody after 7 which is the number that he gets shot on in his duel.

I saw on a video interpreting the musical score of Hamilton, looking at the “one, two, three…” sequence throughout the show…the creator talks about how Philip sang “sept, huit, neuf” in a different key, in his opinion, to show that Philip was going to do things his own way…so when we get to the duel, Philip is shot on “seven” because he no longer has a chance to fulfill his dreams. He also points out that the heartbeats playing as he dies stop at “sept” with Eliza only saying “sept, huit neuf” before her heartbreaking grief scream.

You're KILLIN' me every time you stop only because I know this musical and know what's coming! LOL - However, as I always say, it tickles me to death watching YOU watch this with fresh eyes because it's just so much fun! Yup, you're almost at the tail end and although I want you to get there, at the same time, I really DON'T because that will end the Hamilton series! So, so glad you did this! It's been a JOYRIDE!!

What always got me is that Burr says "Duels are dumb and immature." Then yep....challenges him. Also, see this in person. Its amazing.

this does downplay how much shit Hamilton talked about Burr for clear reasons considering stuff like Hamilton claiming that the reason Burr was so closed to his disabled daughter was because they were having an incestius reationship. They had disagreements in Politics but Hamilton would always go for the personal insults while Burr tried to avoid that due to his image. Heck one of the main reasons Hamilton agreed to the duel was because he figured that Burr would care too much about his political career and social standing to actually do it.

Did Hamilton really imply that? I think it's unlikely. That kind of insult wouldn't have caused much of a stirr. Hamilton called Burr a Catiline and that is how the rumor that Hamilton implied Burr had an incestuous relationship arose. (I think it didn't even gain any traction until Gore Vidal's 1973 book). Hamilton didn't reserve Catiline just for Burr though. He means it as the man who plotted to overthrow the Roman republic. And Hamilton would have had no such belief that Burr wouldn't duel. Burr had already dueled with Angelica's husband John Barker Church. Both Burr and Hamilton were at career crossroads. That is why they took their affair of honor to the dueling grounds. Both had a lot to prove.

Couple of corrections the election between Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson wasn’t a landslide that was for Jefferson’s second term. And after Burr’s Vice Presidency he tried going for Governor of New York but was thwarted by Hamilton again and that’s where he snapped and the letters they wrote to each other leading up to the duel goes on. And Hamilton was in several possible duels between several people including future president James Monroe. But they never entered the dueling grounds they managed to talk each other out of it. But with Burr he couldn’t talk his way out of it.

Aaron Burr was the first one in history to openly campaign for the presidency. He had a campaign headquarters, and his supporters were out knocking on doors, which prior to that was not only unheard of, but considered very uncouth. There were four men on the ballot. The top two would become president and vice. There were two federalists--Adams and someone else. And two Democratic-Republicans (remember when Burr changed parties!)--Jefferson and Burr. At the time, there was one vote and usually the top two vote-getters would be from opposite parties (balance of power). However, this time Adams just got buried by Jefferson and Burr who each came up with 73 votes. The tie went to the House of Representatives, and there were like 35 votes that ended in a tie. In the end, the federalists did ask for Hamilton's opinion, which did sway the vote toward Jefferson. Interestingly this system of voting was changed during the Jefferson presidency to prevent this from happening again. Also, I would term Hamilton's mood in The Election of 1800 DEPRESSION, not annoyance with his choices. He had lost so much... Reynold's pamphlet 1797, Washington's death 1799, Peggy and Philip's deaths in 1801 (timing in the play is played with a bit). He'd endured a lot, and I think he was just... tired. (My take on it.)

As we reach the conclusion of this masterful musical, and we get to share your emotions week after week while viewing it in bite sized chunks, I ask you to think about this? How absol-freaking--lutely emotional it was for all of us who watched this start to finish in 1 sitting. It was simply overwhelming! And that's a large part of why there was such massive buzz about it - and not simply because of the gloriously original music, And the singing. And the acting. And .. you get the picture.

I can not express the emotion I felt when he paused right before the record scratch

15:30 You have to remember, dueling was technically illegal, even though people still did it. There's no stadium, and it was kept pretty hush-hush.

Fun fact about Best of Wives and Best of Women: the titular line is a direct quote from a letter sent by Alexander Hamilton to Eliza. I think that's really sweet

Every time I get to the part where he's like "Best of wives and best of women," I think of that line from The Incredibles when Helen's like, "Oh, you're referring to ME now?"

I heard a historian say that it was almost scandalous that Aaron Burr openly campaigned for himself. Apparently before this era, it wasn't considered dignified to openly promote yourself for a particular office. You were supposed to be put forward and promoted by your supporters. This is why it gets mentioned several times in the lyrics. Also, Burr did serve as Jefferson's VP but after that the practice of 2nd place candidate = VP was changed.

I was looking up something about Aaron Burr and I found out that apparently he tried to get slavery abolished post- Revolutionary War, so I guess he did have opinions - and it definitely makes me see Hamilton in a worse light! |D (Strictly from an outside POV since that wasn't included in the musical.)

I found your channel yesterday. I have worked through this whole Hamilton series. I can't believe I now have to wait a week. I ALSO have no idea how you just keep yourself from plowing through to the end. Oh... uhh... you're gonna want that Cheshire Cat plushy next time. Trust me on that.

Dueling was never a spectator sport. at most five people would be at the duel, the two duelists, the two seconds, and the doctor. many duels happened in complete secret unless it was a very important person who participated or the next of kin wanted to contest the duel results in court, branding the "winner" of the duel as a murderer/ assaulter.

I'm almost certain that you alredy recorded the last part, but I HIGHLY recoment checking out the cut/original version of "Schyler Defeated" (there is a great animatic by "Hamilton Trash" for it) and the cut song "Dear Theodosia-Reprise", in that order. There is a line/motivation for what Burr does in the secound to last song that makes no sense without the context those two songs give!

I just finally saw it live for the first time a month ago and it was on Broadway. IT WAS AMAZING. In some ways I actually liked it better than this version, which I never thought I'd say!

I love how at the start of Election of 1800 Jefferson wants to get back to politics and Madison seems to be crying and wants a mood change after the depressing songs that have just been. It's just a small thing, but I love it so much

My social science teacher taught us about the election of 1800 with Hamilton.

Recommendation for a future reaction if you haven't seen it yet - the songs from Pippin. For some reason I haven't been able to find a single reaction to this yet, and I think it's absolutely worth a look. The only difficulty is that I don't know if there's a good visual recording of the performance - I've only found a few old audience recordings for a few songs. The songs work just fine on their own, but of course the performance adds an extra layer to them (especially in "War is a Science" - the song and acting is very amusing). Here's the song list in order, if you want to try these: - Magic to Do - Corner of the Sky - War is a Science - Glory - Simple Joys - No Time at All (I think this one's my favorite) - With You - Spread a Little Sunshine - Morning Glow - On the Right Track - Kind of Woman - Extraordinary - Love Song - I Guess I'll Miss the Man - Finale I would recommend doing these in order - some of the later songs rely heavily on callbacks to previous songs. I don't think I'm ready for the end. I've become so invested in this reaction series and to see how close the end is makes me sad tbh. Honestly, half of me is in denial of how close to finished this is. I just keep telling myself "The Hamilton Mixtape, the cut songs, the end is nowhere near."

The last song is so wonderful I cry just thinking about.

The one demanding satisfaction holds the reins up until the point when the challenge is issued. If accepted, whatever happens is on the head of the challenged, especially if their second cannot reach a peace.

That's rich coming from a man who had multiple affairs, only one of which gets the amount of historical attention it deserves, and a man who was perfectly happy to let a friend help America win the war but turn a blind eye to that very friend when his nation was fighting for freedom from monarchy.

Just have to say this, whenever Burr is happy something is about to go wrong. Hehehe

8:03 This is the moment where he proves an earlier line by Jefferson to be true. He is endorsing the antithesis of what he claims to have as morals and beliefs. "He knows nothing of loyalty." Not even to his own beliefs. For quite a long time, I didn't agree with one specific line from "Alexander Hamilton", which was "His enemies destroyed his rep" because he needed no assistance in ruining himself, but then I remembered a line from "Congratulations", which was cut from the show. "So scared of what your enemies will do to you, but *you're the only enemy you seem to lose to.* You know why Jefferson can do what he wants? He doesn't dignify school yard taunts with a response!"

I'd like to point out that three times in the show, Burr's first bit of advice/warning is proven. "Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead." 😂

I believe that what in the context of the musical what really sealed his decision was, burr saying that he was chasing what he wanted and learned it from Hamilton. Was the last Nail in the coffin because Hamilton's beliefs lead to loss in his family. In both literal and metaphorical ways.
