    Jefferson is so good at attacking people vulnerabilities. He hit Hamilton with the “daddy’s calling” and “you’re nothing without Washington behind you” and he hit burr with the “thank Hamilton for the endorsement for me” that is some hard hitting shit

    And of course, Burr choses to blame Hamilton instead of realizing his own mistake in being so careful about not taking a stance. He showed himself to be someone who would take ANY stance as long as it helped his ambitions, which was definitely something Hamilton would never endorse. He'd rather endorse someone who's stance is the opposite of his over someone who bends to whatever direction the wind is blowing and will never take a firm stand. (Which Burr openly admits to in the Act 1.)

    The beginning of this song is hilarious coming right after that super sad couple of songs. It's especially funny when you see it on stage and Madison is wiping his eyes with his handkerchief while Jefferson is saying "Can we get back to politics?" like they'd just been watching the scenes themselves. It's amusing.

    Another full circle there... Jefferson has beliefs, Burr has none... direct result from their 1st meeting where A. Ham asks A. Burr “If you stand for nothing Burr, what’ll you fall for?”

    Just for imagery purposes, the next song starts with Burr totally alone on stage and well, you would find Hamilton as infuriating as Burr does in the song.

    Glad you caught some of the Washington on Your Side and It's Quiet Uptown motifs! Another part of this song from WOYS is the "OH!" from the ensemble (This immigrant isn't somebody we chose...OH!). Another phrase brought back into the picture was "Talk less, smile more," which was the first piece of advice Burr gave in Aaron Burr, Sir and Hamilton said he finally used in The Room Where It Happened.

    So for Broadway recordings, the band is done in multiple days of sessions, but per Equity rules, they have a single day with the actors. So yes, they bring in the full cast for an entire day of just vocal tracking.

    So a bit of historical context here: at this time, Electors cast 2 votes, making no distinction between a vote for President and Vice President. Jefferson and Burr, as Democratic Republicans, were a team, running against Federalist John Adams, seeking a second term, and his running mate, Charles Pinckney. The idea was that all the Democratic Republican electors selected would vote for Jefferson and one would throw away his second vote so that Aaron Burr would finish one vote behind Jefferson and be elected Vice President but that elector forgot to do that, resulting in a tie. As per the Constitution, when there’s a tie, it goes to the House of Representatives. The fighting went back and forth in Congress with Federalist controlled states wanting Burr to be President (because Jefferson was greater evil in their eyes) and Democratic Republican controlled states of course wanting Jefferson but Hamilton did step forward and campaigned against Burr because he didn’t trust him (none of the other Founding Fathers did) and because he was still miffed that Burr had successfully run against his father-in-law and take his Senate seat.

    thank you! The one thing I don't understand is why Jefferson says in this song that he wants to change the way things are done re: Vice President, mocking Burr for assuing it will be him, but then in the next song he's the Vice President anyway? I've always been confused about this.

  • @douglasrau5094

    @douglasrau5094

    @@Phelie315 Yeah, it worked that way in the Election of 1896 as well: John Adams, the Federalist, was elected President and Jefferson, the Democratic Republican who received the second most votes, was elected Vice President. Imagine having Trump as President and Hillary Clinton as Vice President these last 4 years-it would have not have worked very well. Especially since the Vice President is the one individual the President does not have the power to fire in the Executive Branch (because he/she is a publicly elected official. It would be like a President firing a Senator-he can’t. The people chose that individual to represent them).

    At 5:25, the bass that starts playing is the same melody used at the beginning of Non-Stop when it's going over Hamilton and Burr's lawyer careers! For your reactions to other Hamilton performances, you might be interested in listening to 'Cheering For Me Now'. It's a song Lin-Manuel Miranda considered putting into the show but ended up not because, chronologically, it would've occurred in the middle of Non-Stop and so Non-Stop would have been broken up. The song is pretty much Hamilton's reaction to New York adopting the Constitution after the public reading his Federalist Essays. It's definitely worth listening to!

    To my knowledge they recorded the album similarly to how they did 'In the Heights' (Lin Manuel's first show, which is also a hip-hop heavy show/album)--Lin thought it was most important for all the actors to be able to see and interact with each other (especially in these kinds of dialogue heavy songs), so he would put the instruments in the solo recording rooms and keep the actors/ensemble in the main room so that they could all perform the songs as realistically as possible. It allows them to really build off each other and gets such a unique vibe on the album that is quite different from other cast albums I've heard. Alex Lacamoire (the orchestrator, arranger, musical director, and conductor) is also the keyboard player for the show/album, so they were always able to have at least some instrumentation live while they recorded!

    It made me smile when you talked about not always knowing who was singing. I listened to the cd many many times and read through the lyrics where it says who’s singing. If you’ve not already done the full reaction I recommend listening to the soundtrack a few more times and putting the subtitles on when watching. Loving all of this, makes my day when a new Hamilton post comes out.

    To that question about recording there are some good videos of other Broadway casts recording their cast albums and typically they are in large room with clear recording booths in a circle with solo recording booths outside for solo songs and larger parts and sometimes large ensemble rooms. They also tend to lay the tracks down in a day or two with the artists because they are doing this while still preforming 8 shows a week and they don’t tend to have a lot of time.
