I'm guessing you missed the context of the scene in The Last Stand where Xavier woke up in the body of the vegetative guy and said hello to Moira. With the vegetative guy being the one he was discussing with the students in class earlier in the movie. If I've remembered all the lore properly, that vegetative guy was Xavier's twin, who was technically braindead from birth but still physically alive. So, as Dark Phoenix was killing Xavier, he transferred his conscience into his brother's body. (Cerebro only _enhances_ Xavier's powers. He's pretty damn powerful in his own right.)

Yeah, you definitely missed X-Men Origins: Wolverine which didn't do well and so The Wolverine was made to make amends. In the comics, Viper was also known as Madam HYDRA but due to the MCU they couldn't outright make that connection in this movie. The extended cut has a longer village ninja fight and there's a deleted scene of Logan getting his comic-accurate suit on the plain in the end. So glad we'll see it and Yukio as well in Deadpool 3.

Best parts of Origins is Jackman and Schrieber. You could literally drive a truck through the plot holes in that thing!

Not that I'm an expert on Japanese culture, but the reason Logan is suspicious of the monk at the wake was that a monk would never have a sleeve tattoo like that. The attitude in Japan has been steadily changing, I'm sure, but even more than in America, where it was historically seen as an armed forces / crime / biker thing, tattoos in Japan were seen as a mob / Yakuza thing.

Re: The tattoo thing, in addition to what others have mentioned, Japan is a heavily rules-based culture. The wake is being held at a temple, where there are rules, whether explicitly stated or implicitly understood by the wider culture, no tattoos are to be shown. It's *extremely* improbable a priest would have one. And right before the "priest" gave himself away, there were hints in his expression and posture that he was more likely a yakuza member waiting for a signal to attack, and he did so realizing Logan was putting it all together and on the verge of blowing their cover anyway.

It’s also the fact that in Japan, 95% or more of the people who have tattoos are or were members of the Yakuza. Tattooing one’s own body is not considered acceptable in Japanese culture, or wasn’t. I do believe it is slowly gaining acceptance with younger generations.

Definitely should not have skipped X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) regardless of what people think about the movie. It’s part of the journey and has some very good elements along with the nonsense.

SO TRUE! Speaking for myself, I did not hate “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” (Granted, they f***ed up Deadpool but she can just ignore all that crap)! Personally, I think she would probably like it.

So, if you want more of a Wolverine back story then you should watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was supposed to be a start of anthology that never happened.

I was bummed we never got X-Men Origins: Storm, which was planned but abandoned when Wolverine wasn't well-received. Storm is my favorite X-Man aside from Logan, she's a wonderful character who never really got her due on screen.

Katana's are usually quite sharp as most swords are, especially the good ones, which we can presume Yukio's is, but they are not intended to be used as bolt-cutters, and would almost certainly be wrecked by using them as such. Wrecking such a sword would be upsetting since they can go for between tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. While Wolverine appeared in the X-Men comics, as part of the ensemble, he had his own comic which was much more violent and tended to involve ninja a lot.

As others have noted, this is not an origin story, and that Dear Ashleigh should have watched or should watch the 2009 movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine...especially if she really wants to see a version of Wolverine's origin story. Part of me thinks that this was a miscommunication, and the person who suggested this movie really meant to suggest that she watch the 2009 Wolverine movie.

For his backstory you need to watch the OTHER Wolverine movie! It's called X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

If the tier wasn’t sold out, I’d pledge to have you watch X-men Origins Wolverine…you should not have been told to skip it, especially as you had no issues with X3 The Last Stand. There’s a lot of key moments in that movie and great performances, as well as some very important references that will be made in future movies.

The X-Men movies timeline gets a little confusing, but X-Men: Days of Future Past should be next (it will answer some of your questions about the mid-credits scene), and yes, the extended Rogue Cut is the version to watch!

That's because the director of Logan didn't know that "old man Logan" takes place in the future but also in another dimension.

For a clearer backstory for Wolverine, you need to see "X-men Originals: Wolverine". It also introduces Wade Wilson, aka: Deadpool, even though it doesn't put him in a good light. But you will really dig the Deadpool movies.

The "I didn't know there was a pool down there line" is swiped from the Sean Connery Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever. I don't doubt you'll get to that one eventually.

Even though people are telling you not to, I would still watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You already made it through the worst X-Men film, X3: The Last Stand. X-Men Origins: Wolverine will give you the context you want for Wolverine's history. Atleast watch it for Liev Schreiber's portrayal of Sabertooth, he was one of the better parts of that movie.

24:12 The bug was basically chewing on his heart and slowing down his healing by constantly causing a critical injury so there'd be too much to heal for _other_ wounds to close up quickly.

For all it’s faults, you need to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine to give you the rest of his backstory, at least the movie version anyway. It does have a few scenes that are paradoxical in the grander scheme of things, but it’s fine if you don’t think about it too hard. Just go with the flow.

Xavier telling Wolverine "You're not the only one with special gifts" goes back to X-men Last Stand. That movie discussed mutants with level 5 powers and besides Phoenix and Wolverine who had those high-level powers, the movie at the end revealed that Xavier and Magneto also had those "special gifts" (level 5 powers) as well. Besides, the Last Stand told the audience what they were going to do. Xavier having the class lecture with a comatose patient who just so happened to look like Xavier and him explaining about transferring minds and conscience was not for nothing. It was a setup for Xavier to come back once Phoenix "destroyed his body" which further proves he was a level 5. Same with the whole injection of Mutants storyline that claimed those who got it lost their powers. It was a setup to show how powerful Magneto was, who despite being injected still regained his powers at the end of the movie when he moved the chess piece (which by the way love that he was playing chess by himself to show that he missed his friend Charles who he usually played chess with).

Only thing that ever bothered me with Xavier’s taking over of the body was the fact that he still couldn’t walk. My guess is largely the atrophy of the muscles being irreversible after so long, but on the other hand it feels like lazy writing.

lvl 5 is their version of saying omega mutants, and omegas are world enders... Wolverine, Charles, and Eric are not omegas... the only omegas in this xmen group are jean (phoenix who could kill everyone on earth if she so wanted with a single thought), and bobby (iceman who is still learning his powers in most of the movies, but if he wanted could set off the next ice age and kill everyone on the planet) Wolverine heals and has heightened senses not very world endy Charles' powers have a limited range even boosted from cerebro he could be a regional threat but not world ender Eric has magnetism manipulation, and a ton of damage can be done with that, and in this setting he is still only a regional threat (also he was classified as a lvl 3 mutant in X2)

The whole idea behind leaving the Yashida company to Mariko was that she was weak and able to be manipulated. Her Father, Shingen was too ambitious to take direction. Yashida, with his new powers, could not be the face of the company anymore so was seeking a successor that could be directed. Master under the Stairs. Unfortunately, he assumed that she was weak to his own demise.

WAIT... did you skip X-Men Origins: Wolverine from 2009? That one comes before this one and THAT one has the full backstory for Logan. Well, at least his backstory in these movies.

No, it does not explain it. They just give a vague outline of a bedridden man, who speaks like Charles and refers to Moira, who we've never met, and they NEVER mention his brother before or after, not even in First Class. Just another example of Fox being shit.

Re: the tattoos. Japanese societey frowns HEAVILY on tattoos. It is not uncommon for people with tattoos to be denied entrance to places such as a bath house. One of the main reasons is that tattoos are particularly common of their organized crime, the Yakuza (fascinating story on their place in japanese society.) Since most yakuza members are social outcasts to begin with, they get tattooed. However, the rule is that the tattoos arent visible in every day life, hence Logan noticing the sleeve tattoo when the "priest" raises his hand.

I have large tattoos on my arm, side and back and can confirm this is true. I was in a hotel in Japan a few years ago and went to use the spa but had to wear a top the whole time I was there to cover them all.

Up next is Days of Future Past. A hint to the wise: it has an extended version that you won’t wanna miss out on. You’d have to rent it, but you’ll benefit from unlocking more of the story.

I'm more then sure someone else in the comments said it already but just in case......Ashleigh, if you want Wolverine's full back story you gotta watch X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That goes all the way to the beginning......for him. 😊

Oh gosh, the Unrated version is definitely better, if just for the incredible and bloody ninja fight scene in the village towards the end.

Some context: Logan has lived for a long time, and he has loved many women, but his 2 biggest love in the comics are Jean Grey - who is usually loving Scott more, but there are different universes - and Mariko Yashida. Logan himself spent decades in Japan, so he knows the culture pretty well and is fluent in Japanese (they obviously skipped this part in the movie). He even almost married Mariko, although it was foiled by Jason Wyngarde/Mastermind (he was in X2 as the son of Stryker, but he is not related to him in the comics). Later their enemies mortally wounded Mariko and Logan killed her as her last dying wish. Kenyuchio Harada ("wannabe Hawkeye") is a mutant originally also known as the Silver Samurai. He can shoot energy blasts through his sword. He is the stepbrother of Mariko, and he is usually an enemy of both her and Wolverine, but lately he was an ally of the X-Men. Viper has also ties to Logan and for a short time she was his wife (it's a business thing at that point), but in the comics she is not a mutant - and has a second codename, Madame Hydra. Yes, that Hydra from the MCU; she was their leader for quite a long time. She was also in a long relationship with the Silver Samurai before her wedding with Logan. Yukio is a ronin, a samurai without a master and a good friend (and implied lover) of Storm; however she is not a mutant in the comics. She was also a lover of Logan, and she is one of his most loyal allies.

This movie is closer to the feel of Wolverine, since this guy was always down to get bloody in the comics.

The Wolverine is a nice taste of what 2017 Logen is going to be. Next stop those should be X-Men Days of Future Past (Rogue Cut). The theatrical cut is solid. But the Rogue cut is far superior

Yeah, theatrical is perfectly fine, but there is (mostly) no Rogue in it and she is a great character. For that reason alone she should watch the Rogue Cut, although there are many more reasons it is superior.

I saw The Wolverine in the local cinema here in the Philippines back in 2013. The scene when the Japanese soldiers stabbed themselves shocked some moviegoers in the cinema and one of them shed tears.

For context in the comics, Mariko Yashida was Wolverine's one true love, and was forced to commit euthanasia by her request when she was poisoned and there was no cure so she would not suffer. There really was no "thing" ever between Jean and Wolverine. Also the mid credit scene is an intro to X-Men First Class - Days of Future Past

I get kinda irritated with how much the movies push the Jean and Wolverine romance when there was only a brief spark of a fling in the comics. Jean was always with Scottz so much so that in more than one timeline they birth a mutual savior such as Cable and Nathaniel Grey. Mariko has a much more interesting relationship with Wolverine than Jean and Scott always gets underplayed as just a boring boy scout when he has the respect and admiration among mutants that Captain America has among most people.

The comic this was based on is great because it was made by two Americans(Chris Claremont and Frank Miller) who watched a lot of Samurai and Yakuza movies in the 70s!

I remember being so very pleasantly surprised by how good this was. After X-Men Origins it felt good to have Hugh back in a role that does the character justice.

A good movie set in Japan is "Bullet Train". The actor playing the son in this is in it too. And he's also good in "John Wick 4".

I've been watching movie reactions on KZread for literal years and while you don't always understand things as they're happening you always get to where you need to be. I absolutely adore watching you get acquainted with movies I've come to love like old friends. Hands down the best reactions, bar none, in my opinion. All aboard the Hot Mess Express. "She's so pretty!" I don't know if they've retconned this, but in the comics Mariko is Logan's One True Love. Like, he kinda falls for a number of women, but none of them hold a candle to Mariko for him. She's the Joanne Woodward to his Paul Newman, the Helen McCrory to his Damien Lewis, the Natasha Richardson to his Liam Neeson. She's the Deborra-Lee Furness to his Hugh Jackman. I SO can't wait for you to react to Logan, now.

Thank God you watched the post-credits scene.

You should watch x men origins wolverine and it should have given little more context on wolverine backstory and it has a nice little nod in upcoming deadpool movies

To be fair, these movies are made by the major studios who only think from the business perspective. Bloody, violent movies mean no kids being brought to movie theaters so less tickets bring in less ticket money. Independent movie studios are more willing to push boundaries. Or sometimes the manor studios don't even mention to movie audiences that the movie is based on a comic such as with Road to Perdition. Even the animated tv shows get restrictions such as the 90's Spider-Man show had a rule that he couldn't punch anyone so there's literally 2 or 3 punches in the whole series and he has to rely on webs for everything.

I rewatched this movie for the first time recently and forgot how insane it was. Hugh Jackman is a beast. I feel like the only thing missing from this was Kitty Pryde because i think shes featured in the comic it's based on. And i think if i remember correctly Rogue was supposed to be in this one as well, probably in place of Kitty Pryde or Yukio. Still it's such a great action movie and the flashbacks of Jean always get me. Because Logan really did love her. ☹️

Since you can’t cut through Wolverine’s skeleton I would think amputation is off the table. Even surgical amputation is null since he’d heal from the incisions before much progress could be made.

Remember the yukio line “I see you on your back, there’s blood everywhere, you’re holding your heart in your hand” it’s relevant…

YES!!! Love this movie! One of the best in the series! Ashleigh, please watch X MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST: The Rogue Cut. I highly recommend it. The reason why it's called the Rogue Cut is because all of her scenes wre removed from the original version.

Agreed! The Rogue Cut should have been the theatrical version. The fact that it wasn't is a travesty. I always recommend to everyone when they get to that film to make sure they watch the Rogue Cut. It makes the film a thousand times better

The Rogue Cut adds nothing of value at all, just shoehorns Rogue awkwardly in for a moment...there is literally no other reason for that version to exist. It adds nothing to the story and only serves to drag out the runtime and slows the pacing to a crawl.

You definitely should have watched the X-Men Origins: Wolverine first as that gives you Logans backstory starting from when he's a child, this film is more the continuing adventures of...

The sword through Logan's chest is a throwback to an iconic comic moment.

"OH WOW! SILVER SAMURAI!" Uh.....yea. Literally that's the Silver Samurai. That's his actual name. Nailed it.

Ashleigh, you need to check out the end credit scene from X-Men: The Last Stand, to fully understand the return of Professor X.

Another great reaction. You’re the bestest. To answer your question about bombs… the reaction front from the explosion travels outward from the epicenter faster than the speed of sound … about 3300ft/second. Basically it would hit him before g he heard it. Keep up the great work 🙂

Mariko (or a version of her) is one of Logan's main love interests (and lover lost) in the comics. Much more so than Jean. Jean is just someone he hits on, when they first meet, in the comics.

Actually for the scenes meant to have a lot of muscle definition, actors are _severely_ dehydrated, it takes days of prep to get the skin that tight, every time you see an actor like that they are _suffering._

Ashleigh obviously wants to know how Wolverine got the claws. Origins Wolverine, the skipped one, is my 2nd favorite Xmen movie. Have no clue what all the hate is for it. One thing I do know, it's better than THE WOLVERINE. If Ashleigh would be so kind as to ignore the hate, I'm sure she will enjoy it. My biggest pet peve in these reaction channels is when haters say to skip movies in a series. One channel was told to skip PHANTOM MENACE, and the reactor spent Episode 2 and 3 asking dozens of questions which were answered in TPM. Then he went back and watched it anyway. Two other channels were convinced to skip the 1st EVIL DEAD movie because there's a stupid 10 minute recap in the 2nd film... people said the 2nd film was technically a remake.... no its not. That's why it's called EVIL DEAD 2. Then there's people who say to skip all sequels, so there's some channels which only watch the 1st film in each series. Ridiculous.

Origins has some wonderful stuff in it. The opening, in particular, is fantastic. It also has some brain bendingly silly things in it. I applaud you on your ability to over overlook the silly in favor of the wonderful.

The professor transferred his consciousness in a man's body who was in a coma who was also paralyzed and he's making himself look like his old self through people's mind's eye.

I watched this film some time ago and somehow glossed over the graphicness of the violence. Easy to do with a Wolverine film. Now, looking at this film, I see it as very Japanese. There are genres of anime that are specifically gory in their depiction of violence, yet beautifully-framed. This film has that beauty of frame with extreme and often unexpected gore. James Mangold directed this film as well as a subsequent film "Logan" that is set further into Wolverine's future. I can recommend "Logan", which is set in America so doesn't have that extreme anime element that was so disturbing in "Wolverine".

We can only assume Xavier was able to put himself back together from the dust that he was blown into when he did at Jean’s hands as Dark Phoenix… that was one of his ‘special abilities’.

Also, your questions about Wolverine's back story are answered in a movie titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) which came before X-Men: First Class (2011) and The Wolverine (2013) in release date. But almost all fans find that movie to be a letdown, so I'm not surprised nobody has asked you to watch it.

I'll confess there's times I'll watch your reactions when I haven't seen the movie, especially if it's a movie I don't know if I want to see in its entirety. This is one example of a movie I do want to see in its entirety after seeing your reaction (spoilers don't matter to be honest). I saw all the earlier X-Men movies but I hadn't really continued the series, this one does look like a fun time. Also I'm a stupidly huge fan of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon/Ryu Ga Gotoku video game series and a lot of scenes gave me Yakuza vibes especially the obvious parts about the yakuza plus the bullet train and all the action scenes. (No really Ashleigh I highly recommend you play the Yakuza series, especially Yakuza 0, it's a satisfying beat-em-up game with cutscenes and plot like a movie). I do recommend watching X-Men Origins: Wolverine because you do get that backstory even though the movie isn't a masterpiece (then again who cares about masterpieces).

This is the same director as Logan, and if you never got around to that, you're gonna have a blast. I also missed a couple X-men movies, but only the last 2 and only because I knew it was ending. Days of Future Past is fantastic, especially the Rogue Cut. The X-men series really only had a couple duds.

The MCU will never make a Wolverine of their own that is this tragic and badass That's why they're bringing this one back

The woman villain is Lady Viper. She is a member of the Serpent Society in the comics. They are a team of villains with different snake abilities.

"In a manner of speaking, yes. He's a veterinarian." Which is perfect for The Wolverine.

My only real problem, with this movie, was that Viper is a mutant and the Silver Samurai isn't! It gave he a huge double take.

There’s also an alternate ending showing what was in the box he was given on the plane. Pretty cool.

In the first film critics and fans of wolverine complained how nonviolent his claws were ( everyone he stabbed survived) so every preceding movie upped the violence a little more.

The mid credit scene from The Wolverine leads directly to the best X-Men movie, Days Of Future Past.

Wolverine's backstory was intentionally kept vague or redone for decades. So trust me the confusion is valid. Marvel did eventually sit down and give us an authorized backstory, but you don't get that in the movies. I can say that the way he got the metal was not a volunteer situation. But you're right this movie was way more bloody than the others because it's a Wolverine story vs. an X-men story. His comics can get brutal.

Wolverine's character is very violent in the comics. So they gave us a non sugar coated movie.

12:08 what tipped Logan off at the funeral was the fact that the priest had a tattoo. In japanese culture, tattoos are considered marks of criminals or punks. Also, props to Logan for knowing that. Like his cultural knowledge across the world is impressive

The context of Xavier saying to Wolverine, "You're not the only one with powers." comes from the first X-Men when he woke up on the exam table and was wandering through the school with Xavier talking to him in his head.

Good movie. You want Wolverines origin story, but unfortunately it seems you forgot to watch x-men origins wolverine. 2009

The hotel at 15:51 was actually a residential/office building in real life (Nakagin Capsule Tower). It was torn down a couple years ago.

Loved your reaction to this, Ashleigh. You get some more of Logan's history and back story in the earlier 'Wolverine' and the later 'Logan'.

This particular movie could have DEFINITELY used an R-rating. Surprisingly different as far as superhero movies go, and the cinematography is on fucking POINT!

This movie was made as a rated R movie, which it is. Studios were afraid to make a superhero movie any higher than PG-13 because they thought it would limit the audience and thus they would not make as much money. Then along comes a little movie called Deadpool that was an R-rated movie that was hugely successful so this fact along with a lot of fanboys complaints that Wolverine is very violent in the comics and we have never been able to see him in his full, berserker glory in the movies, the studio made the last two mainline Wolverine films (this and Logan) rated R. Here endeth the lesson.

This IS the R rated version. You can see the blood they removed in the PG13 version at 12:52. Plus the scene at 15:55 wasn't in the theatrical cut.

Ashleigh, watch X-Men: Origins Wolverine on your own. If your patreons don’t want to see it then don’t do it for the channel. But you HAVE to watch it. It’s a great movie. Just know that Ryan Reynolds’s character has been retooled. He’s not the same as he is in his own movie.

"There's blood splatter everywhere in this film" - of course there is, it's a Wolverine film. The bullet train is real, and can go more than 200 miles per hour (on a straight flat section). it uses magnetic repulsion to lift the train which eliminates friction. "You could break your legs now !" - not likely, he's lost his healing but he still has adamantium bones. Random facts(?) about Logan : Wolverine's popularity stems largely from his personality. His catchphrase from the comics sums up his character : "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice". But my personal favorite line (I forget the source) is : "...a rogue grizzly. No more fierce or deadly creature walks the earth - 'cept maybe me". He knows how dangerous he is and he's proud of his skills, but not happy about it. Logan has trauma-induced gaps in his memory, and some of what he remembers might not be true, so NOBODY knows all of his backstory including him. He does have a long history with Japan which this film used. He's in the woods in the beginning because that's his favorite place to be; he doesn't really like being around most people (or possibly trust himself around them), so he retreats to the wilderness when he can. Also he can't do much about the hair, it just grows like that naturally.

Why did he not have you watch the 2009 - X-Men Origins: Wolverine? You really need to see that one. Give more, and in my opinion needed, back story.

I respectfully disagree with you all, but then as Ashleigh says, it's all based on personal opinion. I enjoyed it in the theater and enjoy rewatching it now and again. My personal opinion was that Logan is the worst one. I'm sure that won't win me any popularity points either.

You should have watched X-Men origins Wolverine to get a better picture of how he became with the metal claws

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Is the backstory movie you are asking for. Chronologically it is the first Wolverine movie, going back to his childhood.

Remember that Logan's bones are fused with adamantium steel. When Shingen cuts into his shoulder, the uchi-katana stops when it hits his clavicle (collar bone).

Wait, though silly, Wolverine: X-Men Origins has some very important pieces, not to mention down the line Deadpool reference. After further reflection, A LOT of pertinent relationships for Logan are explained in that movie. Yes yes, about 20% of the action goes off the rails, there is a lot of good though. Please go back and watch.

@Ashleigh Burton you missed the post credits scenes of X3: The Last Stand where Xavier transferred his consciousness to his Twin brother who was Vegetative (the patient he was talking about in the opening of X3). Transferred when he gives Wolverine the smile before Jean explodes him.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the movie you are looking for. Starts off with Logan as a child and shows how he got the adamantium skeleton.

Seriously.. they need to stop gatekeeping these movies.. Let the reactors react to the good and "bad" movies so they can get caught up to how we all feel about the characters.. the positive and the negative.

For Wolverine's origin story you should watch the appropriately named X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Sure, it has a lot of flaws but I think it's unfairly maligned, Especially considering some other later movies. It's certainly not the worst X-Men movie, and far from the worst Marvel-themed movie.

This was more like a reaction and a half-concert with all the singing. Absolutely great!

“So, is the Silver Samurai a robot?” Uh, in the comics, no: He’s a generic bad-samurai descended villain in metal armor, but the movie was trying to figure out a plausible update for a silver-age character from way back. Silver later helped SHIELD and the Japanese gov’t develop the Big Hero 6 team, a fact Disney wasn’t allowed to mention in their movie.

I remember seeing this movie in the theaters and was so boring I fall asleep until I woke up, the movie was over, this movie didn't do it for me, Happy Friday Ashleigh with your fine self, cool reaction as always, you have a great weekend sweetie 🥰❤️

Xmen Origins Wolverine has the Wolverine backstory you're looking for. I'm guessing your patron told you to skip it because it's not very good. But it does make the Deadpool movies funnier...

"Days of Future Past" is going to blow your mind. But if you want more backstory to Logan, try the aptly name "Wolverine: Origins".

Did we skip X-Men Origins: Wolverine from 2009? That is the movie, although flawed in many ways, that gives the backstory of Logan.

Did you do "x-men origins: wolverine" yet? That's where the majority of how he became Wolverine is. And it is easy to confuse the two since they are both basically titled "Wolverine".
