The Wire: Lessons in Leadership - Bunny Colvin
Фильм және анимация
Howard "Bunny" Colvin is arguably one of the most relatable characters in The Wire. A man who is stuck in the middle with no power or support to really make a difference.
Find out how you can learn from Bunny's mistakes and avoid the frustration of middle management hell.

Unsung Hero without Crown Or Glory, yet he did a achieve two small yet undeniable victories. He proved middle management can still Buck the system when it's wrong and he gave a young man a chance and Future despite the low options.
Bunny was my fav character, he just had some kind of calmness and charisma that made him so likeable.

Bunny: If a murder is committed, how do you make a body disappear? Chris Partlow: Hold my beer.

@@number3stunner118you’re speaking of the same group of cops that had Freamon in the Pawn Shop Unit for 13 years and 4 months. Then placed McNulty in the Marine Unit. They would definitely take it out on Western District cops, knowing they couldn’t do much to Colvin. In the end, he took him officers out of harm’s way. A true leader
On point like bow and arrow equipment with this one. Bunny had it rough on both ends... He did his best. Marla Daniels said it best “The game is Rigged.... But you cannot lose.... if you do not play!”
There’s a direct correlation between business and the streets. I love how your videos point that out.
I am currently in middle management. I have learned to become influential and extremely persuasive to higher-ups in order to get the stuff that I would like done. The key thing is to frame it so that it's "their" idea and show them what benefit they'd receive out of it.
It's so cool how you breakdown the show and its characters, then translate it to how they apply to real world strategies. You have a real grip on the "Dickinsean" aspect. Lol. It's true tho.
He appeared in 2 scenes in season 2 the 2nd where they do the raids following the kid being killed, Colvin is standing in the pit an says “what exactly is it we are doin”

Hell yeah! Back at it again! I work in banking and this happens all the time they want numbers ( higher checking accounts, higher loans, and want more fraud prevented) they higher ups want this stuff done but have never worked this job a day in their life but will be happy to fire if expectations aren’t met which are very difficult to complete.
Thank you for this. I am a former public school principal and I can relate to the middle management story.
I’ve been working in non profit with kids on and off for about 5 years and what you said about middle management is some of he truest shit I’ve ever heard . Your channel is dope keep making vids man
This is Senior Non Commissioned Officers(SNCO) in the Military. Myself included this literally brought tears to my eyes as this is what I felt in the Airforce after 24 yrs of service as I was Bunny
Kima got shot because she wasn't sure where she was. They flipped the signs. That show is brilliant. .
Bodie & Bunny would've gotten along well together, they were basically in the same situation.
Gotta do one on Chris . The man was pure black Air Force 1 energy

What I will never understand is that why couldn't Colvin just "retire" Then he would have the benefits of a Major rank and still get a good job elsewhere. Instead he created this "Hamsterdam" project that was doomed to fail.
@distinguishedallureproduct879

Just like a Greek Tragedy, "Bunny" was just like his name...kind...He wanted solutions instead of seeing the same faces on TV or meetings saying "We will try to fix this...just follow me" and then nothing follows from it...He could have just retired, but then his city and people would have continued to suffer, people like us can't just sit still and watch....and even though Hamsterdam didn't work out, it was a solution, and his selfishness would not let him "retire"
@MickyTubbs1985

There are "S.O.P. and PROTOCALS" that must be complied with before one can effectively retire from most, if not all "CIVIL SERVICE POSITIONS " especially when one occupies a command and /or supervisory level office.
Dude you should REALLY do Lt. Daniels. Being in a leadership position in the army myself, I've seen NCOs and other leadership (I've been guilty of it as well) having to cover up insubordinate soldiers when they try to show you out in front of the team, having the pressures of following guidance from up top that you dont agree with but have to convince your team to follow otherwise. A lot of stuff he went through hit home for me and I bet a lot of other junior leaders as well.
Beautiful observation man keep it up!! 💪🏾
I think Bunny was much like Poot when he was younger

I was gonna ask for this one! Also, fire intro buddy!!! You'll eventually run out of characters, cant wait to see what you tackle next with your excellent observations, critical thinking, abd rationale. Idk if you write a script but if you do, it's well structured. Solid intro that gives us your main hypothesis before you move into explaining your opinion while using examples but it's your conclusions that are the best part. It Reminds us of your main point but in a different way that includes all that was used before but condensed and non repeatitive. Then you justify your answer to the hypothesis with conviction and make it consumable for us. Kudos bro. You should write a book.
I actually look forward to these videos ! I strive to be like Slim Charles .
Bunny and Boady lacked the ability to set up their own situation and stand as A boss themselves. If they headed they own set up they could have surprised themselves as being good at truly leading. People get stuck as middle managers lacking confidence and any vision. A Boss wants them to be boss in their absence yet not really wanting to appoint competition to themselves at the top, so they let them remain as is. No Boss wants A manager to change the game in their absence. No Boss wants the stand in Boss unable to revert back to A lesser position.
Great content, dude. Keep it up!
Colvin is my favorite character!!! I wish that I had a Colvin as my supervisor 😕. Thanks for the analysis 🙂
Naymond a angry corner kid is one funniest things i heard today
Great job bro.
Lions and Legions, I enjoyed listening to your analysis. I found it to be spot on. The Wire has so many great characters; I find it hard to rank them. Still, I think Bunny Colvin has to be in my top 5. I think Hamsterdam was a great idea , and I understand why Bunny tried it. However, I would have never done it if I were in his position. I worry too much about my next meal and having a job to pay for it. I would love to have a positive and lasting effect in this world or simply my community, but I would not risk my job to do so. That is why I like Bunny: he risked it all.
Robert Wisdom should have gotten a huge bump out of The Wire, he was fantastic in every scene.

I just discovered your vids today and am binging lol so forgive my bombardment of your comment sections!! Obv I LOVE Thr Wire and yout vids provide a unique analysis for those of us who have exhausted all options for The Wire 'essays' on YT... Respect due!! Anyway... Major Colvin was never one of my favorite characters because: I always found him a little TOO perfect/selfless and profound. Nothing really goes wrong for or threatens him. He's like the Captain Marve of his universe! He even ends up gaining more than he lost from being fired. However, this vid def made me look at things a different way. I still think he's too perfect but that's the character. An example of a veteran police with optimism who still wants to enact real change vs the jaded veterans who gave up and just want to coast thru their remaining years and make more money. No real point here other than I really dig your vids tho, I guess lol
Hi, I love your work. May I suggest picking one of the characters next that seem to float above the muck ie the idiosyncracies of that institutional mythology? Contrasting what origins from their special position in the plot, and what results from traits well developed could be a new angle I'd be interested to see and hear your angle on. I think the closest to this already done would be your essay on Michael. Example: Lester Freamon on the law side, maybe Landsman as a twisted but effective version; or (of course) Omar, or Vandas+The Greek. Fitz (the FBI agent) could make a nice miniature, too, I think. But hey, any character you find Insights to :D

I think what happened to Colvin was a tragedy. Not excusing what he did, but he should've never been forced to face that pressure as a 35 year vet with 6 months to go until retirement. They owed him better than that, for all of the years of exemplary service. This is why I don't feel sorry for employers when they suffer or struggle to keep/hire employees. There is no such thing as loyalty in business or politics.
I know it's big to ask but it would be nice if u could start the sopranos breakdown of characters still great work man I really love ur content

The one Prop Joe will be a must view.
I think the goal of the program was find out why the kids go out on the corners and how to prevent them from the ending up dead or in Jail . I agree with you he should have documented the program and the feel good stories and that's what Bunny did with Hamsterdam but it didn't save him there but what i love about that is when Royce sees the drop in felonies and the goodwill from the community he tries his hardest to save it till the game returns the balance of things and Clearance gets screwed
