The Wild Rip-offs & Inspiration That Built Mickey Mouse

We're welcoming Mickey Mouse into the public domain with an exploration into the history of various bits of inspiration and rip-offs that built him. Mythical desperation, legendary innovation, and even a few ghosts from Walt's past are just of few of the bricks that we uncover beneath Disney's original House of Mouse!

Walt Disney didn't threaten Rudolph Ising to sue him for Foxy and Roxy looking too similiar to Mickey and Minnie Mouse, he just told him to "cut it out" in the most politest way possible. Though, Ising could have redesigned Foxy and Roxy to look very different, but if he did, maybe Bugs Bunny or the other Looney Tunes wouldn't have existed.
I watched Circus Capers on a 4-disc DVD compilation of public domain animated films. I was so shocked to see a version of Mickey, but not shocked to hear that they were sued for copying Mickey.

@@marquesgorham4226 Nah. Again, you're misreading this. Read the video title again: "The Wild Rip-offs & Inspiration That Built Mickey Mouse." I'm clearly calling out rip-offs and inspiration as being 2 different and separate elements that went into establishing Mickey Mouse. In the video, I cover characters and events that inspired Disney's creations. I also cover characters other animators created that clearly rip-off Disney, and how Disney used or threatened to use the law to enforce his copyright over MM. I then ended by saying that it was these events that established MM BOTH in popular culture and in the courtroom. Nowhere did I say that I think MM is a rip-off.
This is what always happens. Whoever ends up winning popularity, their theft of ideas goes unnoticed
Well, it was during the rubberhose era. With the exception of Felix, alot of animators and artists couldn't get many of the cartoon character designs different from each other until Betty Boop's arrival (well... once she turned human).

As they got increasingly better at animating the characters, they started to broaden out and animate other characters drawn in different art styles and designs.

Foxy's gotta be my favorite of the Mickey Mouse rip-offs covered here. I like to imagine that he isn't really dead after his final cartoon, but was simply acting when he was shot. He and his girlfriend got a less Mickey-like makeover just to be safe (which turns out to be their Tiny Toons designs), but they didn't really star in any cartoons after that, and while they are remembered as a shameless attempt to cash in on Mickey and Minnie's stardom and popularity, they're still glad they helped pave the way for future Warner Bros. cartoon stars. Actually, their Tiny Toons designs seem heavily reminiscent of Yakko, Wakko and Dot. I guess this could be explained by the fact that Animaniacs was in development while the Two-Tone Town episode was being made, but I can't help but wonder if they had happened to catch a glimpse of the Warners while they were initially bringing chaos to the lot before they were captured and sealed within the Water Tower in-universe. Hmm...
They Kinda Look Like These Pizza Tower Character References Milton Mouse - Fake Peppino Mickey Mouse/SteamBoat Willie - Peppino
Its so crazy how early Mickey is nothing like the wholesome one we know now

I dunno. While working for separate studios, Walt and Herman/Ising seemed like they were on good terms with each other, which is why they obliged when Walt contacted them about Foxxy. Walt even hired them to direct one of his Silly Symphony shorts, “Merbabies”, out of thanks for them lending their own animators to “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs”.

The history is as follows: Bosko begins the Looney Tunes series, Foxy started the Merrie Melodies series, got killed off, replaced with Piggy who’s retired after two shorts, eventually Goopy Geer lasts three shorts, then retired. I'm surprised that you didn't mention the Warner siblings, Yakko, Wakko, and Dot, from Animaniacs, since so much of their backgrounds are rooted in cartoon history. Much of their initial look comes from rubber hose characters, such as early versions of Mickey and Minnie, or Felix the Cat, or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Also, I'm surprised that you didn't mention Oswald, unless that's a separate video.

Did you not watch the full video? Oswald is mentioned AND shown around the 1:40-1:48 mark as part of Mickey's creation story.
Speaking of copying, compare the way Pete looks in the comic strip storyline "Mickey Mouse In Death Valley" to the cat who battles Milton at 8:20 . They both have the same kind of shirt. Am I imgaining things or did some artist at Disney take inspiration from this Milton cartoon when creating this early design for Pete?
