    @@ma.2089 I understand what he means and I'm disagreeing. The only people who consider these shows iconic are the kids who grew up on it and are blinded by their nostalgia. Objectively these are not classic shows let alone very good ones. Those shows were cheaply produced failures when they came out which is why they only lasted 1 season. The reason they've been able to last as long as they have is due to the brands they are apart of. That's why a bad movie like the 1993 Super Mario Bros. is still remembered by the fanbase till this day.

    I only caught their broadcast of the show maybe twice, but that's all it took to get me hooked. We had 2 vhs releases of the show from ToysR'Us with 2 episodes on each, the box was a sparkly hot pink with gold and silver text with blue borders if I recall, definitely not the type of thing an 11 year old boy would be caught dead with in the 90s. I remember watching both tapes quite a bit too much, even brought them to a like-minded friends house during a sleepover where he introduced me to the wonders of the internet as it was in 1996. We browsed fan made sites that had artwork and stills from the show, character bios, sound bites and show facts. Some of these sites consisted of humorous lists with titles like "You know you watch too much Sailor Moon when:" and would go on to give 100 bulleted answers with ridiculous typical fan behaviors. I also remember how hard it was to get ahold of any merch, generally you had to go to the rare specialty store that focused only on anime related imports or wait till a convention came around to the city. Now as a 38 year old man I couldn't call myself a fan as my interests have drastically shifted, but I have many find memories and still prefer the American English dub we got from back in that day, I think the voices and music are far more fitting to the show and can appreciate the effort that went into trying to adapt it to a 90s American audience.

    all sonic licensed material from the time was sourced from a ''bible'' produced by sega of america, bit of a confusing story, but abc refused to pick up the sonic cartoon for syndication because of its comedic tone, but DiC still needed a network package so they split the show into the wacky slapstick syndicated show and the more serious,edgy story-driven network show. the Archie comic came about around the time they were producing the pilot but the show kept being pushed back and its canon redone, and because they had no frame of reference of how the story would be they just ran with the characters and setting and pushed foward with their own canon as well. the pilot would eventually air as the last episode of the first season.

    I think I was one of those few kids that stuck around the credits and despite not being an English-speaker I noticed that some of the shows I watched a lot as a kid had the DiC logo. I could've never imagined how complicated were things behind the scenes. I was also surprised that DiC were the ones which dubbed Sailor Moon in English and made so many changes, here in Latin America the anime was aired with very few changes, they even kept the realtionship between Sailor Neptune and Uranus intact Seeing how DiC tried to make an Lupin III spin-off for Western audiences and the fact that some unrelated Americanized versions of Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya were in development during the 90s, I wonder I companies like them were trying to adapt more Japanese shows from the ground up, instead of just dubbing them, albeit with a lot of content removed

    The fourth and final season of Sailor Moon (Sailor Stars) was dubbed into English for the first time a few years ago. If they went to the extent they did at changing Uranus and Neptune's relationship, I can see why they avoided that season for all this time. Namely, the Starlights. Also, with anime dubs in the 90's, there was a general attitude that "American kids" wouldn't understand elements of Japanese culture. Probably the most famous example is Pokémon (4Kids) which called onigiri "jelly donuts". I think Sailor Moon did it too, and I wondered as a kid where I could find donuts that looked like that.

  • @pablocasas5906

    @pablocasas5906

    5 ай бұрын

    @@TurquoiseStar17 here in LatIn America we got the Sailor Stars season dubbed almost inmediatly after Super S ended around 1998. The way they approached the Sarlights was kind of interested, when they were in ther civilian identities they were voiced by male VAs, but when they transformed they were voiced by women. Though I don't consider that as sort of censorship considering that, unlike the manga, the Starlights use magic to transform into men while they were in Earth posing as the Three Lights Regarding Pokémon, 4Kids held the rights for its international distribution, so almost all international dubs were done using the edited 4Kids version as a base. The "jelly donuts" also happened in the Neutral Spanish dub, since the translators were using the English script they had to respect its changes, and that always confused me as a kids since I used to watch Ranma ½ around the same time and there they referred to onigiri as "bolas de arroz" (rice balls), I couldn't understand why they were "donuts" in Pokémon and "rice balls" in Ranma. The thing actually gets kind of funny when I discovered that both Pokémon and Ranma were dubbed in the same studio, Audiomaster 3000

    I personally think DiC deserved to be absorbed into Cookie Jar and DHX Media (both now rebranded as Wildbrain). As much as I enjoyed most of the shows they've made (especially Inspector Gadget, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog and The New Adventures of Beany and Cecil), alot of their content was way too juvenile and safe as their humor weren't really funny. But I will admit, they did made a impact for animation as they brought in some iconic people like *Vincent Waller* (who later helped out for Ren and Stimpy and currently the SpongeBob franchise), *Arna Selznick* (who later was a storyboard artist for Eek! The Cat, Clone High and Maggie and the Ferocious Beast) and *Milton Knight* (who later did the character designs for The Pink Panter (1993) and The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, as well as recently being an animator for the Popeye: Barbecue for Two collab). (Lol. I don't really DiC's cartoons as much anymore as I moved on to Xilam's stuff and indie cartoons recently.)

Some suggestions on what that video could cover include: 1) What was up with such things as Club Mario, King Koopa's Kool Kartoons, and media produced specifically for non-English markets like the live action Korean and Danish Mario segments. 2) How DiC managed to even get Captain N made in the furst place. 3) Why DiC shifted from Nintendo to Sega content at the height of their console war feud. 4) Why Sega kept making Sonic shows with different continuities and tones. 5) Any scrapped projects in relation to video game adaptations (including Super Show versions of Metroid and Double Dragon, that Sonic Sisters spinoff, and a full season of Battletoads instead of just one vhs)

Andy Heyward caring about money over quality was no wonder why DiC Entertainment bombed and suffered the Atari Inc. Syndrome. It's also a shame that no matter what version of Sailor Moon or Saint Seiya we got back then, it was going to end up westernized with too much normalization just because children were too juvenile to handle Japanese anime. I know that laws were very conservative back then, but all those fussy parents complaining about violence in cartoons and video games spoiled the fun and took away everything that made video games and anime special to begin with. As much as I'm glad DiC dubbed Sailor Moon, changing Zoisite to female was unforgivable.

Audiences demanded more than what they had done in the 80s and early 90s. They served their purpose in making TV animation a pipeline in the United States though, so I wouldn't say they weren't a good part of animation history. It's interesting to wonder where they would have been today if the FCC hadn't killed Saturday morning broadcast cartoons, cable TV had blew up just a bit later or they had stepped up like the newer channels. What happened to sonic satam sucked, I loved that show when I was a kid, I really wish the show had been picked up for a 3rd season, even if it was as a dvd movie, like they tried later on.

    I'm grateful for DiC creating Inspector Gadget! The slick animation of TMS combined with the comedic stylings of the late comedy icon Don Adams and the groovy soundtrack by Shuki Levy made Inspector Gadget a timeless classic!

    SatAM was the biggest thing for me. Trying to get me to wake up as a kid on the weekdays was a struggle. Saturday morning though, I was up as early as 5AM

    That might explain how many of DiC's shows got The Program Exchange treatment. The cereal companies kept DiC afloat during its lifespan.

    I was surprised how much they kept changing animation studios when they were on NBC.
