Whatever Happened To the Hub Network?

Фильм және анимация

(reuploaded to fix visual errors)
My Little Pony, Dan VS, Pound Puppies, LPS, Transformers Prime... SheZow??? The Aqua Bats Super Show??? what do these shows have in common? Pretty much nothing! but in the early 2010s Hasbro and Discovery teamed up to create a space for all these disparate shows. A "hub" if you will. Wasn't too successful but there is a rich history and a few VERY unique shows that a lot of us 2000s kids remember.

    I'll never be able to forget The Hub, it was the only channel I watched back in 2011/2012 when other kids channels were failing horribly at keeping me interested with their new shows, and it felt like it was the only channel even worth watching as I was phasing out of watching TV in general because of how varied the channel's lineups of new and classic shows were, generally of really great quality as well. Even as I eventually stopped watching, I still felt a difficult to explain sadness when I learned the channel had shut down just a couple years later and retooled into Discovery Family, it felt like the end of something great to me, and it's something that kid me could have never seen coming, to this day I still miss those days and look back on them fondly for more than just the earliest days of the MLP fandom. Everything in The Hub felt linked together with their advertising, as a part of a greater network of interconnected shows that crossed over with each other freely, and it reminded me of the old CN City days, something else I also loved from my childhood

    It still really sucks that the rebranding of the Hub resulted in the cancellation of shows like LPS, Dan Vs, Strawberry Shortcake and R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour. Well I mean the main reason LPS 2012 and LPS: AWOO were cancelled may have been because of low toy sales, But I wouldn't be surprised if even the network decided to pull the plug at the last minute. And it could well be that Strawberry Shortcake: BBA was cancelled for the exact same reasons. As for Dan Vs and the Haunting Hour, The reason for their cancellation was never fully explained. But I think a possible reason is because despite the shows successes, It could be that Discovery Family cancelled those shows because they probably thought they weren't right for a "family friendly" network so they pulled the plug because of it, At least that's my theory.

  • @Historybuff-mx4dv

    @Historybuff-mx4dv

    Regarding what you said about Dan Vs and the Haunting Hour. While it's unconfirmed I guess could understand why those two particular shows wouldn't be considered family friendly, Because despite the Haunting Hour's "Too scary for children under 7" warning kids probably still watched it anyway which probsbly made parents mad. And Dan Vs may have been a success but, I'll bet parents had problems with it. Because the concept of an angry little man wanting revenge against those who have wronged him may have been entertaining for adults, But there's no way a character like Dan would ever be considered a role model for children plus a lot of stuff that Dan does in the show would've been considered "imitatible" and kids would only learn how to hold petty grudges, And of course there's also the overall violence in the show and as we all know parents are never ok with cartoon violence.

    I wasn't a big fan of that Strawberry Shortcake CGI cartoon as other people, since I wasn't much into the light-hearted Strawberry Shortcakes as much as the more cartoony Wildbrain series (which have the same people who worked on My Little Pony and some other cartoons like Johnny Test and Being Ian). But I'll admit that the character designs in the CGI show were cool enough. And yeah, I really enjoyed My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Pound Puppies alot. Dan Vs. was a cool show too. Too bad Hub's original catalog (other than MLP) didn't had much impact as their acquired stuff.

    I had the vaugest memories as a baby/toddler of watching “the show that would always change it’s theme song” and for like, 10 years I had no idea what it was until I realised that Animaniacs used to air on the Hub, and I _loved_ the Hub Overall, the network holds a special place in my heart, and this was a very good video 😭❤️

    Wonderful video, I'm always so happy to see people bringing up Dan Vs. As someone who was part of that very small but very close community at the peak of it's airing, it astounds me to look back at how kind, polite, and loving a community centered around a show about an angry delusional man could be. Most of the people were so kind and chill. It may not have produced the same level of nostalgic magic that the MLP fandom did, but I made some amazing friends through that show. It's never held up quite as well to me as I've gotten older, but it holds a special place in my heart for the fandom and memories alone.

    god i miss hub network :( growing up on the hub is probably why i enjoyed the new strawberry shortcake, it has very dhx feeling animation and a ton of familiar voices, either from that golden era i loved as a kid or voices i recognize from the new mlp which just feels so right tbh, the cycle of "oh i know you as this pony" continues and it just takes me back actually, what i want to know is, why does netflix only have the first 4 seasons of mlp. why is there less than half the entire series come on you're in that deep just commit like damn

That was a death sentence even with the brony fandom. I was a brony of the era (I was 10 at the time and wasn't in the main fandom), and the channel was out of my reach. I ended up just watching MLP on Netflix until I stopped watching around 2015.

    Well, since this is a reupload, I will post my comment with my thoughts again: I absolutely loved this video. As a latin american kid, I never got the Hub network, because Discovery Kids just kept going and changing with time, and that was one of the networks I was watching the most (also because it had MLP), so I've always been a bit curious about how the Hub experience as a whole was over there, since many bronies at the time were familiar with it. It's interesting to see Discovery Kids in LATAM and Hub shared some shows, but there is still so many differences like in identity and much more. Very complete and interesting retrospective!

    I feel as though the only time that I would watch the Hub is whenever they would have the “Hub Family Movie” on. I remember seeing those bumpers where they would show a montage of the various movies that they would have on. Whenever they would put on a movie that I was interested in watching, I would always watch it. I remember back in the early years of the hub that my older brother was obsessed with Friendship is Magic, and I wasn’t really interested in the show at the time, but looking back, I’m upset that I didn’t get into the show during that time because since then, I have seen Friendship is Magic, and it’s actually a really good show, and I would consider myself a certified Brony. I also remember when the Hub was my first introduction to Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Pinky and the Brain, and since then, I have seen Animaniacs in its entirety, and it is now one of my favorite animated series, right next to Ren and Simpy (1991). All in all, the Hub was a great network and it is sad that the network is now a thing of the past.

    Blythe dolls are a pretty big deal in some jfashion spaces- I recognized the name immediately since I wear lolita fashion. They used to do a ton of collaborations with various Japanese fashion brands, so maybe that's where the association of Blythe being all about fashion comes from? (Or they're just doing the very basic, 'girl likes clothes'). It is bizarre though seeing her in a LPS TV show.

    hey, this was an amazing video essay, i LOVED this network when it was still active, especially for Transformers and the game shows! (hell i was there for the 20-hour Megatron takeover they did leading up to a Transformers Prime event, think it was a finale) here's a few tidbits i know, especially towards the Aquabats and its Super Show :) The Haunting Hour's actually an Emmy-winning series surprisingly enough, winning Outstanding Children's Program at the Daytime Emmys twice in a row in 2013 and 2014 (Aquabats was ALSO nominated for that in 2013) afaik DEVO was a major inspiration for The Aquabats! it probably influenced the band going for a more new-wave direction for the sound, so seeing Mothersbaugh as a guest on their show was likely a huge honor to be bestowed upon. Gerard Way was also a director and writer on the AntiBats episode! (also the cartoon segments on the Super Show were done by a team that did art for the band before, i forgot their name sadly... and Mega64 did work on the fake ads!)
