The vast River Trent to the quaint Fradley Junction. A narrowboat cruise. Episode 70
Val and Andrew take a narrowboat cruise from the vastness of Trent Lock to the quaintness of Fradley Junction, via the historic inland port of Shardlow. The River Trent is enormous, but we soon navigate onto the canal and take in the antiquity of Shardlow. We pass the site used by the Rolling Stones, and in Burton-on-Trent make (a mess of) an awkward reversing manoeuvre. And how do you say Alrewas ? We end the cruise at one of Andrew’s favourite canal junctions, Fradley where Val gets some admiring comments.

Hello Andrew, my wife and I sold our big traditional narrow boat Galton at Sawley Bridge Marina in 1993 after making our las cruise on the boat from our mooring at The Hyde near Kinver on the Staffs and Worcs Canal. So your trip has brought back a lot of memories.

Hi Rex, apologies for the late reply, I'm pleased to have brought some happy memories your way.
Thanks to you both for a lovely cruise, full of interesting places and information . I don't know why, but we haven't seen much of you two recently, so it's nice to catch up. Take care.
Love it “So Dickheads can’t scroll their tags all over it’🤣😎👍🏼 great Vlog. Keep it up. 👍🏼😎

Realy enjoyed your vlog having spent my early childhood in the small village of Rolleston on Dove the canals were the best way to see my local erea cycling the tow paths avoiding hilly terrain of the roads it allowed me to travel much further than it normally would so it was a joy watching your vlog to see familiar territory 😎😎😎

Great vlog as always ….I loathe the co-op too, on many levels! Hope you both had a restful and happy Winter😍xx

Thanks Wenna, I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the co-op. Actually my mate Del (@Boatdogoffgrid) isn't a fan either. I fail to see how they can brand themselves as ethical when they cover EVERYTHING with plastic. We had a wonderful winter on the Llangollen thanks. Next vid jumps to April though...
Hi ya , it’s ELO day again , gosh that seemed so long ago perhaps one day we will pass each other again, and may be stop next time for chat and coffee . No wigs just fancy hats😀 All the best

Indeed it was a while ago, but they was the last of the 2022 vids so something a bit more recent coming up at the weekend. And yes it would be nice to stop and have a longer chat time. Hope you've got a good boating holiday lined up for this year.
Very enjoyable vlog, seems like you are a little behind, guess that was last fall? Cheers, Nigel

Yeah, that was the last of last year's. Didn't film anything over the winter so the next one was filmed in April. It seems I'm always a bit behind these days, but editing seems to take a long time.
That was so enjoyable,,,Thank you both for such an informative, relaxing and entertaining video,,,,Best of luck from us in Japan!

@@talesfromtheswansneck I am coming out at Stafford boat club. A friend and I managed to get a cancellation so we are both out at the same time for moral support 😊
Just what I needed this morning. Looked like a beautiful float. The snow is finally gone here. We had some beautiful sunny weather but the last three days have been cold, wet British weather. Unusual for this time of year. The forest needed it but a couple weeks of sunshine would be nice now. Enjoy.

Thanks Skip, I'm glad you're out of the cold white stuff for a while. Even cold wet British weather is better than that! Hope you're managing to get out to more dances these days.
On the subject of pronunciation of place names, many years ago I was at college with a lad from near Burton upon Trent and he pronounced the River Dove to rhyme with rove. Keep cruising!
@talesfromtheswansneck
Жыл бұрын
Ah interesting. Local pronunciations are a minefield aren't they. Later this year we'll be cruising on the river Nene, which I'm assured by my brother who lives down there is pronounced the Nenn and no Neen as most people say.
Brilliant. Really enjoyed watching. Really hope you are well and having a great Tuesday. We have subscribed to your lovely channel. Many thanks from Chris and Jane 🎉

A real insight into the reasons why canals were dug. Industrial reasons. A very good historical perspective Andrew thanks very much for your time and efforts to produce your volgs. Hope you are both well. Safe cruising.

Thanks David. Yep everything was done for a reason and the reason was profit. I'm still amazed at the time, effort and energy that went into making the canals.
Keep up the good work...

Hello Both, love the vlogs. Just to say I am with you on the Marstons Pedigree and my favourite place for a pint or 6, is The New Inn at Buckby top lock. Keep up the good work and enjoy. Ta Chris

Thanks Chris. I must say I do occasionally miss a nice pint in a decent pub. Sadly though I find most pubs are shit these days, beige and lacking in atmosphere so tend not to go in them anymore. But, I have fond memories of the many fine hostelries I've visited in the past.

Hi Andrew I hope you are both well ? I have to say I love your term for so called graffiti artist I find it much more apt and I may steal it for future use , loved your latest vlog

The genuine graffiti art isn't so bad - it brightens up some pretty dismal corners. The problem is more with the taggers just mindlessly leaving their scrawled name everywhere. It seems no different from a dog marking its scent on every lamppost...

@@James-In-Exile tbf I should have been more clear and state its the taggers that ruin it there is some graffiti you can actually call art I also like the guy who goes round cleaning his art into the wall

Andrew Fradders M, surely. I have just completed the Leicester Ring which included a lot of the route that you took. In fact, I think you passed my boat just above Dallow Lock where it was stopped for a while waiting for a repair. I really enjoyed the River Soar and it would be interesting to know why you didn't. Even the aircraft noise when we moored at Kegworth was tolerable. Leicester itself was brilliant. I used Shobnall Marine twice and although everyone tells you to go in backwards, the correct method is to do it forwards. Easier to get in and a better lookout at the exit. Just avoid the little footbridge. You also mention going south along the River Trent. Why is this "down"? Surely you are going up the river. Jeff
There was not any casualties with the burnt out Narrowboat it has been there year. The cooling towers are all that are left of Willington power station demolished decades ago.

Thanks Grahame, good to know that no one was hurt but always sad to see sunken boats. I wasn't aware that Willington had been decommissioned, odd that the cooling towers haven't been demolished.
