A Broken Man Turns His Life Around - Episode 66

In 2019 I was a broken man, and then I bought a boat. The healing began. This is my deeply personal journey from despair, depression, and anxiety, and my introduction to the canals. I faced many challenges, and the stress-free lifestyle refuelled my passion for life.

Hi Andrew, I well remember your very first vlog as you left the Pennine Boat Yard on Batteyford in Mirfield and after being escorted through the river Calder flood gates and across the river into the canal towards Brighouse, it was then that I saw the pressure of whatever had gone on in your life, lift from your shoulders. Of course at that time you didn't give any reason or history as to why you had been so stressed. But I just knew. Sadly a few weeks later, my wife of 50 years passed away due to Cancer. I was devastated, even though I had known for many months what the eventual outcome would be. Despite all of this, I had determined to remain positive. I was supported by my two sons, sister and many friends and neighbours. I played petanque twice a week and bought a Ukulele and taught myself how to play it via KZread, even though previously I had never played any instrument before and couldn't read music. I had open heart surgery 12 months ago but even at the age of 74, I still remain independent, enthusiastic and have positive mental attitude. During the dark days immediately after my wife died, your vlogs and those of other vloggers kept me positive, so thank you for that and keep enjoying what you do and sharing it with us.

Hi Harry, thank you for sharing your own traumatic experience. Even though you realised the inevitable would happen that clearly doesn't prepare you for life without such a loved and valued wife of so many years. Your life must have changed quite dramatically, and for many change is difficult to deal with. Your way of dealing with the loss is wonderful, keeping busy, socialising, and learning a new skill. I'm pleased that my videos played a small part in keeping you positive during those dark times. I hope I'm as independent and positive as you in ten years time.

I would say that I don't think men are rubbish at opening up. We are taught from very early on that it is feminine or even "gay" to talk about our emotions. When people like you share wonderful stories like this it helps to bridge that gap. Thank you for sharing this. It put some hope in my heart and a smile on my face on a dark morning. That there is still a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark, is such a beautiful message to share.

Well, this is the first of your episodes to pop up on my YT feed and it took me by surprise and completely unprepared. Instead of another happy dreamscape of canal life, it challenged me to look life full in the face. And I am thankful for this Andrew. As much as I and others love escapism, it's far better to heal and deal with life before, and as we follow our escapes to happier places, not simply run away from the pain and pressures. This video of yours is one of the best frank and sensitive approaches I've ever seen. Wonderful stuff. You have a new subscriber. Now I have to go back and start your journey from the beginning. I will catch up. Meanwhile, smooth sailing. ATB.

It was of course somewhat different to the usual content, and of course wasn't particularly easy to put together, but I must admit I was quietly pleased with how it turned out. A quietly important piece I have to say. I have been battling on for ten years since I lost my wife to cancer and gradually have clawed my way back to giving at the least the public appearance of coping - moving onto the canals was something I very strongly considered, seeking just that more placid, more solitary, existence. And I am still tempted by it, which is why I still seek out and enjoy channels like yours (and those of each and every canal-boating KZreadr you mentioned :D).

The challenge and the serenity and being immersed in nature sure helped my healing. I wish you luck.

I hope you've got some support, it can be very difficult especially those long wakeful nights when you just seem to think of the same thing over and over. I know you don't have too many canals in the US but you have huge rivers. Also a vast and diverse landscape which could be explored by camper van/ RV - could be a bit lonely though. I think any new challenge helps, doesn't have to be life-changing. One guy commented on here that he lost his wife of 50 years and found solace from taking up the ukulele, having never played music before. I wish you well Ray.

I’ve been following you, on and off, for a few years now and was always struck by your artist’s eye and your unique narration. There are so many narrowboat vlogs now they are becoming a bit of a bore as each new boater thinks he/she has discovered the secret of life and happiness. Good for them, I say. Your vlog this time is a great life story and drama. Meeting the lovely Val was the icing on the cake. I lost my dear wife some 15 years ago and I miss her still. We met by pure accident too - she sat next to me on the boat train from Euston to Liverpool, where I was about to change my life and emigrate to Canada in April 1952, and she was returning from a sabbatical and taking in The Festival of Britain. My decision was almost perfectly mirrored by American poet Mary Oliver in “The Journey”. I’m now 96 and living comfortably in a retirement residence but the whole narrowboat experience appeals to my sense of adventure. Had narrowboats and canals been so accessible in 1952, I might well have changed my life the way you have. You are an inspiration and I wish you and your partner a long and happy relationship. "Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be. The last of life for which the first was made.” Robert Browning. Cherish each other. Life is short and this isn’t a rehearsal. Never let the sun go down on your anger and remember the two words that are so often difficult to say: “I’m sorry.” Bless you, both, John, Ontario, Canada

Hi John, I apologise for the late reply, but thank you for your tale of how you met your wife. Life throws up some strange coincidences sometimes, or perhaps they are not coincidences at all. I think you're a brave man for emigrating, something I considered in my 20s but couldn't do. And yes I agree about many of the KZread boat vlogs, too many and absurd sensationalism, but hey, everyone to their own. I adore this lifestyle and still find the adventure in it. Two days ago we went down the Anderton boat lift and on to the Weaver Navigation, which appears to have more current than we're used to. We've both agreed, it's such fun.

I have struggled all my life with self worth and self esteem, finally getting q diagnosis of aspergers and anxiety when I recognised myself through how my children were within the autistic world.....for the brief time I lived on a narrowboat it helped me to breakdown my worries and focus on a more simplified daily routine, whilst soaking up nature around me, sadly hubby could not settle to boat life and we have moved back onto land....its hard to look forward and to not ruminate on the past and replay life's events life losing a parent....to like yourself before others is a daily challenge but one thing I learnt from the waterways is to pace myself, focus on one task and to not worry about what I do not achieve but to praise the one positive task I mastered however small....we can be very analytical in our thinking, always trying to replay the scenario again and again... you have climbed that mountain and have run down the other side, may the path ahead continue to be balanced and positive, thankyou for sharing your own personal journey, not enough of us do! Xxxx

Hi Lynette, good to hear from you again, and thank you for your open and honest response. There are so many positives to take from being nuero-diverse / on the spectrum. Yes we can overthink things, be over-critical of ourselves etc but we tend to have a great deal of empathy, creativity, attention to detail. I'm sure you're aware of all these. Understanding that I am 'enough' as I am, and that I have enough has been the key I think to happiness, and also interacting with nature. But what really turned things around for me were the positive affirmations, absolute game-changer. Really changed my perception of myself, and made me for the first time in my life love myself.
