The Unsolvable Scooby-Doo Mystery

Ойын-сауық

I love the fall season. Everything about it is just amazing. Fall is truly the "feel good" season in my opinion. Nothing pairs better with the feel good season than getting bundled up all cozy and watching a good mystery unfold on TV. The two go hand in hand. If ever there was a show that meets right in the middle of mystery and that "feel good" feeling, it would be Scooby-Doo. It's a show that has been entertaining generations of kids and adults alike for decades now. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we are attempting to solve what might be an unsolvable Scooby-Doo mystery.
Thank you for watching!

I always felt that the best Scooby-Doo movies are the ones that have an air of real mysticism to the mystery, The Zombies being real, The Loch-ness Monster actually being real, The Witch being real, Alien's existing, Cyber-chase gets a pass for taking place in a virtual world.

@@DemonicGoddess technically yes but most of those monster were the ones that came from the original universal monster movies and are so well known as movie characters most people would think those were dreams specially given the fact that most adults know shaggy is a stoner. Where as zombie island interduced the idea that real people can become monsters and not just because of greed behind a mask. Witch in my opinion is what made the original live action interesting because it took the concept of real people being corrupt, becoming real monsters and ran with it.

Zombie Island changed EVERYTHING canonically. And also opened so many new doors. While The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo was technically the first to include actual ghosts and demons, Zombie Island brought the idea of real monsters into the mainstream continuity. Hands down the best movie of the franchise.

@@DemonicGoddess In "13 Ghosts" and "Boo Brothers", as well as the series proper from the Scrappy/Flim Flam era, it was Daphne who was Shaggy's girlfriend. Googie was used as a stand-in since while the prior-mentioned content had romantic subtext between Shaggy and Daphne, they seem to have faced studio backlash in making it explicit. Also, part comes from the possibility that they couldn't get Daphne's then-most-current voice-actress to reprise the role...hence why Googie is voiced by the voice-actress for another side-character in the film.

@@DemonicGoddess Note that 13 Ghosts aired in 1985, while Velma and Fred were removed from the franchise as a whole in 1979. So that narrows near-literally the entirety of the Scrappy era where neither Shaggy/Velma nor Fred/Daphne were even possible options. In terms of specific relationship before that, I can’t recall any specific Fred/Daphne subtext. Least of all that weighs more than the Daphne/Shaggy subtext in 13 Ghosts.

There’s something so unique about that era of scooby-doo right before the “what’s new scooby-do?” era(which I also like). It’s like the creators of that era weren’t afraid to get actually creepy and dark with the subversions of there being actual ghosts and monsters like obviously the zombies, cat-people, the ghost of Witch Sarah Ravencroft, the cyber-stalker, aliens, etc. the witch’s ghost and zombie island was legit creepy enough that I had nightmares as a kid over them.

The scene when Velma reveals the name of Moonscar's ship is brilliant. It's the third beat of the joke, transforming the "get out" into a Maelstrom -- it changes the warning about the house into a warning of a mighty, terrible storm. It's a clever reveal, but it also builds on what's established in the scene.

Zombie Island was definitely the darkest scooby doo movie out there. You have actual monsters that lured and slaughtered countless victims (granted they were the victims at first because of Moonscar), some of the most graphically shocking zombies at the time for a kids movie (seeing zombies being reanimated from bones to rotten skin is definitely a shock factor, as well as Simone and Lena turning into skeletons and then exploding into pieces.) I actually found the transformation scene too scary for me when I was little. This movie was definitely a one of a kind treat for the franchise. The animation factor in this movie was brilliantly well done too. Cyber Chase was really cool too, being transported into a virtual reality world and seeing all the different worlds the gang had to go through, it was a pleasent experience. But, I think Zombie Island is the one that sits on the throne.

I think the two things that really make zombie Island stand out to me are Fred's attempts to make some explanation other than actual magic make sense, imo it works better than when it's Velma slotted into that role, and the fact that at least to my knowledge it's the first time at least in the animated movies that has badass Daphne where she actually shows that she can fend for herself and be a key piece of the gang on her own.

For me, Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost is the best because not only was the mystery real, but it introduced 3 of the most legendary characters in all of Scooby-Doo canon. The Hex Girls, who were so awesome they not only appeared in other Scooby-Doo movies (Legend of Vampire Rock most notably) but also got to pop up in both "Whats New, Scooby-Doo" and "Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated" the latter of which even provided them two new looks, and gave us a sweet supernatural-ish battle of the bands.

It’s not nearly as dark (both in tone and design). There’s much more comedy. And of course, you have the carnival level with all of the cameos. It’s a much easier movie to enjoy compared to Zombie Island unless you’re prepared for a heavier movie to watch. I'm an O.G. Scooby-Doo Fan and I completely get why you're torn between these two movies. Both were classics that feature riveting plots, fully fleshed out twists and surprising villains (three elements many of the other TV movies, live action movies, and even the plethora of TV series incarnations clearly lack). However, I have to give the edge to Zombie Island because of how it showed the gang having not only gone their separate ways but also working regular jobs (and thriving in them - well Velma, Daphne and Freddie anyway) before "getting the band back together" so to speak. Those opening scenes made the gang appear like real people instead of the cartoonish versions of Dobie Gillis character on which they were based. In a nutshell, Zombie Island gave the Mysteries, Inc. Crew a soul - something that neither Cyber Chase nor any of the other properties of The Scooby-Doo Canon have ever come close to succeeding in doing.

I agree with everything you said. My family also owns zombie island and I've seen it multiple times and i think its the best by far. the soundtrack is genuinely great, the animation is pretty good considering when it was made, and if you're watching it for the first time, its kind of captivating because you expect it to just be "a guy in a mask" and then it turns out there are real ghosts and zombies. THEN later on, the amazing plot twist that they are HELPING the real monsters and the ghosts were warning them of the danger that the land owner posed. THEN once they defeat them, and have no evidence of what happened THE GARDENER is a detective. all in all it leaves nothing to be desired and is truly an iconic movie for anyone who has seen it. I appreciate your in depth dive into each movie and breaking them down and comparing them. You did a great job.

Cyber chase holds a special place in my heart but it definitely is a “Needs Improvement” kind of film. The animation, music, and overall writing could have been better. The story could’ve been more focused and, especially in regards to developing the mystery and suspects. Speaking of which, you don’t spend a lot of time with the suspects at all. I still love the hijinks in the virtual world, and the “meeting our virtual selves” part, but it did feel aimless and filler-y at times. I’m always so surprised (and happy lol) at how treasured Cyber Chase is by the general Scooby Doo fan. I feel as if the Alien movie, the Witch’s Ghost, and Zombie Island are far more deserving of such high regard…

what I love about this is that since everybody is suspicious there is no twist villain like in a lot of scooby stuff so you don't know who is helpful and who isn't; so if you forgot most of the movie or are watching it for the first time its a surprise about who is good and bad which is one of my favorite parts of this movie.

As someone who has lived in Louisiana their whole life, you should definitely try some of the food from the movie! Though be wary as crawfish stink to high hell (I personally don't like them simply due to that). I do wish they could have animated the gumbo a bit better though since that's definitely not what it looks like. I love both of these movies so it's definitely hard for me to pick which was my favorite. Cyber Chase with its video game aspects appeals to my game design side while Zombie Island appeals to my Southern side since I am actually from Louisiana.

The sound editing on "who opened the window" and the creepy music behind it freaked me out as a kid, so too that the monsters were all real and wanted to kill the gang for reals. Truly a scary film. Cyberchase had this feel to a lesser extent but there were too many obvious clues with the baseball references to sustain that feeling it might be real. Cyberchase also did a lot of random location jumping (which makes sense for the film), but Zombie Island really feels like they are stuck in a terrible place. Zombie Island will always be up there with Gunn's 2002 live action Scoob film as the best Scooby Doo productions, and definitely the best part of the animated content.

Zombie island is easily the best of the movies I've seen, between reluctant werewolf, ghoul school, witch's ghost, cyber chase, alien invasion, attack of the Vampire, night of the chupacabra and a few others from the mid 2000s. The best overall quality in all aspects of the writing and production, and its genuinely dark and terrifying material for children. Even as a grown man, that catperson transformation is disturbing, almost looks like the animation and design from attack on titan. Watched it after only seeing a few episodes of the show from the 70's and had me hooked, when the newer Era of the show came out, I believe around 2002, I was intent to catch new episodes when they premiered

As another “I’ve watched every Scooby Doo movie” person, you’ll hear Zombie Island and Witch’s Ghost and Cyber Chase spoken about constantly as the best movies and yeah, they’re definitely great (I love Witch’s Ghost and Alien Invaders) but I do think a lot of it is nostalgia talking. There was a definite drop in quality in the mid 00s and 10s but things like Curse of the 13th Ghost are so good and rarely given a look. I think my thing with Zombie Island is that it’s fun as a stand-alone but the animation is that rough late 90s style that doesn’t work for me and the voice performances are weird and everyone feels slightly out of character.

Tbh there is no set character model for anyone. Like they each have eras of a personality which movies usually choose a specific one to use. Like Daphne can be seen as incredibly competent or kinda dumb and super clumsy depending on which era. I think Jello Apocalypse (think that's the channel) did a good video explaining the various character traits that each character uses throughout the history of Scooby-doo when explaining why he thought Fred was the best character. Obviously the characters can seem off if this is a personality they've never exhibited anywhere before, but I feel like Zombie Island has them acting a way I remember seeing in other media. I could be misremembering though

It's like how i can't get into Big Top Scooby Doo because as fun as it is (especially the entire fred plot), anything that hinges a plot on shaggy being a bad friend to scooby just doesn't really feel like the very bare essence of the character to me. but there's a reason film is subjective and I think my frustration comes from steadfastness with which people will knock any deviation from The Big 3 scooby doo favourites, which feel so heavily informed by nostalgia. and I love nostalgia!

Like this movie absolutely terrified me as a kid cuz of the zombies and (spolier) Lina's and Simone's were cat designs. But as I've gotten older the more I watched this movie the more I thought about how dark this movie is to an adult. How little we know about how people died on the island and had their remains buried on the island, how there were soldiers from the south there, and how Moon Scar sent people to their death's by getting torn apart by alligators. That stuff is fucked up I noticed as an adult when it completely flew over my head as a child😨

As a kid, I absolutely loved the Cyber Chase film, and now I just really appreciate how the 10th level was a nostalgic snapshot of what Scooby Doo's origins. Despite feeling more nostalgia for Cyber Chase (and being a huge Tron fan), I'm going to have to agree with your assessment. I think they could have patched up the plot hole by making the Virus sabotage the device (since it was established that the Virus could control electrical equipment). And it may have been more interesting if each level was designed to pay homage to Scooby Doo's history in one way or another.
