The H9 is an effects pedal from Eventide that as evolved over the past few years: it contains all the effects previously released in the Eventide Factor series pedals - TimeFactor, PitchFactor, ModFactor and Space, and quite a few more that are exclusive just to it, that don’t exist in any of the Factor pedals. It’s basically all of Eventide’s hardware effects in one box, which is a pretty big deal, especially considering is doesn’t cost much more than one pedal. In the accompanying video I give an overview of the H9's interface, and then explore my top favorite presets for synths. Finally I'll summarize with pros and cons.
Obviously, you can connect any sound source to the H9, whether it’s your voice, a guitar or anything else. Since synths are the focus here, I’ll be using a simple synth voice from the MatrixBrute and I’ll also use it to send MIDI messages to change H9 parameters.
OVERVIEW
There are three versions of the H9 - from a hardware perspective they’re the same, it’s just a matter of which algorithms come bundled vs. what you need to purchase later. In the video I demo H9 Max, which is the version that contains all the available algorithms.
The H9 can store 99 presets, chosen from a variety of dozens of core algorithms with hundreds of presets in total. All of the H9's functions are available using the on board controls, however, if you have a phone, tablet or computer, you can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth and enjoy a substantially enhanced controller experience using the companion H9 Control software.
The H9 accepts mono or stereo inputs, and can output either in mono or stereo. There's an assignable expression input external expression pedal and foot-switch control. MIDI in and outs let you use any MIDI controller that can send CC messages to control any one of a number of parameters.
Algorithms and Presets
H9 presets are built on top of Algorithms. An Algorithm is a fancy word for a group of sub-components organized in a certain way - sort of like a mini pedal board within a pedal. This can be a combination of components from any one of Eventides four other stomp boxes, along with new ones unique to the H9 - things like drive, multiple delays, reverbs, distortion, filters, compressors, arpeggiators and pitch shifters in various combinations.
There are over 40 different algorithms and hundreds of presets in total, and you can create and save your own.
Summary:
PROS: This is probably the most comprehensive multi-effect pedal out there. Dozens of algorithms and hundreds of presets will substantially enhance the sonic palette of your synth.
CONS: You need can only use one preset/algorithm at a time. If you want to chain a couple of presets you need another H9 or other effect. The second "con" is, if you like to mess with parameters in real time, which I do, you need to have an iPad or external MIDI controller for quick access to all the parameters.

Nice...glad to see this highlighted for synths. It's a great tool. Liked my first one so much (H9 Max), I bought a second one (H9 Core), which was cost-effective because I could then use all the algorithms from the Max in either one. I'm not crazy about needing an iPad or computer to do deep edits, but it's a fair exchange to keep the footprint small.

@@TheRealAudioDidact I love the H9. I use my smartphone and tablet to control it. A little picky with the Bluetooth but eventually got all the kinks worked out. My only complaint is there are too many choices and parameters lol. Kind of makes it feel like a plug in. The onboard controls are minimal and I never use them to be honest. So if you dont want to be tied to your phone, tablet, or PC, the H9 may not be for you. If you want a do it all efx processor with great quality sound then yes it's a keeper.

I was gonna get some of the TC Electronic plugins with usb controllers instead of the H9 but it seems like a few H9’s will do all that and more. If you buy one fully loaded H9 you can get up to 3 more base units that will have access to all of the algorithms. 4 H9’s will cost about the same as the TC Electronic plugins but be vastly more flexible and wonderful. So thanks for helping me make the right choice...

I just watched your analogue heat vid as well and i was wondering... which of the two would you recommend me going for? I know theyre different beasts, but they stand in the same ballpark quality and moneywise, and also i already have a delay and a reverb. Im in need of a true stereo overdrive + modulation fx. I was going head first for the heat, but the h9 sounds creamy and sweet... and its slightly less pricey... any thoughts? Im mainly using a dsi tetra, but plan on using whatever fx machine for general signal processing as well.

Maybe for synthesists at home who are on a budget they should consider the ZoomMS70CDR pedal. Multi-effects in any series configuration, limited to DSP processing power; so on average about 4 effects simultaneously. I finally bought one this year, I delayed purchase because of all the mixed reviews. For recording synthesizers the Zoom is fantastic, sounds great, and you control the chain of effects in any order and parameter you wish. Cost: $150.00.

To the rescue! Yes of course you can sequence the H9 with a midi sequencer or a daw. You can also control its parameters with MIDI. Regarding sequencing from the Matrixbrute - using what - the mod row in the sequencer? Even if so that would only be one parameter. A Digitone/Pyramid/DAW etc would be more appropriate for that - and yes you could record the motions into a daw from the MB

Hi! I finally gave up for one of these… Browsing all the presets is a journey in itself and some are just astounding e.g. some pads from my old JX3P get huge breadth! But I have some difficulties with the Freeze and Infinity functions: are theu available for every presets and the way to get to them is not that easy. I'm still a newbie to this device though!

Moden day question: H9 Max, Mod Duo X, or Empress Zoia? The Zoia seems much more deep / programming / tweak focused. Mod Duo seems in the middle, and the H9 seems ready, usable but customizable. Purely synth over here, wanting effects to all of my various synths.

An expression pedal could free your hand from the knob, very useful.

Can you use the Pitchfactor and Timefactor to bounce back specific frequencies of your choice, e.g. whole number multiples of the fundamental, i.e. the overtone series?

Eventide H9 Max, Line 6 HX Stomp, Elektron Digitone & Elekton Digitakt used together would be cool (guitar, bass, synth loops/samples and multi effects/amp modelling) or alternately to the Digitakt an Akai MPC Live instead ... also never seen anyone making their own drum samples with microphones, a mixer and mpc live or digitakt

I picked one up yesterday. I was a bit miffed as to why numerous people claim the delay's in the H9 aren't very good. I would say they are as good or better than the Timeline.

Great review as always thanks. I’m wondering how you can sync H9 patch changes with other midi pedals/synths - or another H9. The H9 app seems to have a good live set list patch changing feature. If it translates across other midi capable devices I’d be sold on it.

I do agree with the comments which give yu top notes and directly come to my questions: seeing the compfortable connection H9 and tablet i wonder which reason might exist to buy an eclipse and spend lots of money. Is it the possib to chain some algos at a time ? I cant think that a top player in the market like eventide would push an product out of market. Second regarding the maxibrute: beeing hyped as a very big one, a bolide, etc it is now very quiet with the „bolide“ living low in the shadow of prologue, prophet-x, quantum and all above moog one (sic!) ?

if you were to buy a used H9 Max and later on pick up a couple H9 Core, is it a straightforward process to access all of your H9 Max Algorithms with both the core units? From what I’ve heard, Max algorithms are tied to the pedal, not your account - so not sure how that works w/ cores.
