@@acidlab9586 1000000% agree!! Appreciated a lot your comment. This is why I bought just few very important gears, and will keep them all my life, because people NEVER MASTER their rig, they just replace them and again and again… We are infinitely lucky to live an era where machines are very, very, very powerful and deep. What it means is we can enjoy them during a whole life before being limited… People’s skills are limited WAY BEFORE their machines… Consumption. Anyway Always the same story, people being lazy with their brain. The best machine we’ve all got.

Exactly my point...I had the H9000 for a while and loved meddling in algorithms myself. But this is targeted to guitarists who seemed to be overwhelmed with the classic H90 app already, so they did not want to get into the support business one needs to provide if VSIG is open to all. I asked if we could see a 4 algo,2CPU rack unit in the future or a paid for VSIG and both was answered with maybe :)

Now this is a real studio unit. Powerful, rich, and pricey. I love it, but where I'm at I would have a hard time justifying the price tag for an effects unit. I get that beginning hobbyists aren't the target though, of course. maybe if I get to a point of making income from it, I could justify the cost on something like this.

Great overview as always. At the same total cost I went a different direction. For my setup I have moved to using an iPad ($300) over USB to an audio interface ($300) for effects processing. My mixer ($300) has 4 mono send/stereo returns to the interface/iPad which runs a variety of effects. I figure a lot of folks have iPads and 4 channels in AUM with as many effects each as you want is a LOT of go juice. Different strokes for different folks and the H90 does have a number of advantages over that path.

@@loopop Other Desert Cities and Enso from Audio Damage are both steals compared to PC prices. Eventide themselves have a (relatively small) number of their most popular effects which can only be considered pricey compared to other apps on the platform. Klevgrand Modley is an absolute must "effects box" rabbit hole. To me H90 is tough to beat for form factor and relative ease of use. However, for the same cost an iPad, interface, and analog mixer with 1 stereo and 6 mic/mono ins & 4 separate mono send/stereo return effects loops does extract a size and complexity toll, but is more vastly more deep & wide.

Hi @loopop thanks for the video, once again, you're the "human user manual" ❤😄 I agree with you about the 3 knobs being nice even if it would have been even better to enjoy a line of 4 or a second line of 3 for 6 knobs in total, that's clear. There's one con you didn't mention, don't know what you think about it: the integration with laptops is good with the USB-C port but the Eventide software seems to be standalone. It would have been better to see an AU/VST version of it as well, in order to make automations on our DAW. Like Overbridge on the Elektron world. 😉

Thanks! Since you asked what I think, personally, it's not in my workflow to do that for this or the Elektron gear (which I like a lot standalone), but that's what I love about the comment section - for people who think differently so thanks for the comment.

I have one. Absolutely the best sounding lush effects out there. A nightmare to learn to operate. It's more suited for studio work than a pedal board. Especially for that price.

Think of it like this..... this is a Strymon BigSky, Volante, Timeline, Mobius, Dig, Flint, Zelzah, Sunset, Deco, El Capistan, Lex, Brigadier, Orbit, Ola, and some of the NightSky, all in one box. It holds its own and often surpasses (in multiple areas) things like the Line 6 Helix, Boss GT-1000, and the Fractal Audio stuff. Really, it is great value for money and if Eventide support it for years and years to come with firmware updates, then really I don't see the price as a con, nor am I put off by it. I ordered mine instantly, and am digging into it and loving it.

It seems like a fantastic upgrade to the H9 and a pedal I really want to try in my setup. I just wish (and perhaps this is too much to ask for) that, over USB, I could use the algorithms inside of my DAW while the pedal is connected to my Mac (a sort of Virus TI2 type situation). That would open up a world of possibilities to me that I would otherwise have to bake in during recording. Or use as part of a send on an established track. Maybe it's something they can add down the road. Maybe it's only something I want. Ha! Regardless, it'd make this an instant buy for me. As it is, I still want it, but as I'm mostly a studio musician, I feel like I won't get as much out of this pedal because of the nature of my workflow. Still. Sounds amazing. Great review, as always.

@@abeteezy I get that. But since the pedal is fully digital, shouldn’t it make sense to be able to use it as both a real time audio processor and a plug-in over usb inside a daw? (Didn’t the H9 do that to some degree?) maybe it’s a feature in there somewhere. But to buy the pedal and the VST plugin seems like unnecessary double dipping.

To be fair, that $899 is probably exclusive VAT/sales tax, which differs per US state but is often much less than our European VAT rates. On top of that there is import tax, so that’s the difference plus some extra margin for their effort to ship these. Still, I feel this thing is overpriced. Should have been priced below €1000 imho. I like the product and Eventide has created something interesting to me, but not for above €1000.

2 H9s here and a Space, I prefer the Space due to knob per function, not a fan of having to use the Ipad to control the H9s, it's added expense and cumbersome. SP-H9 is a great pedal to change hot knob in performances. I can appreciate what the 90 does, just that I already have 1 H9 Max and 1 core which is upgraded to a Max for free. I will still check this out as you can never have enough pedals, thx for the upload.

@@WackyJackyTracky I posted an answer and it was removed for some reason. You need an app then connect via Blu Tooth and it will see the specific device, then you put in a 4 digit code from memory. It's very easy, BUT it changes how you interact with the H9 for sure. I have 2 IPADs btw.

👍 as always. well... I have two H9s, first was for my guitars pedal board the second for my synth rig... but both ended up on my board. I wasn't feelin it with the effects on top of synth patches, it was too much, what do I program then, my effects or my synth patch? pre and post H9's for my guitar is definitely doing it for me. also, while the H9 is hard to program, it's not impossible and in a year of having my first H9 I pretty much forgot about the software. This is a fantastic seeming pedal but I don't think there's anything here for me.

Or just get my second H9 if I don't care about the new UI improvements. If most of the algorithms are the same and the sound quality is the same, I'm not yet motivated. We'll see.

How is the MIDI CC implementation? Past H9's were pretty spotty in this respect. If I wanted to use this with an Elektron device using lots of P-Locks, how well would this work? I also can't find CC mappings in the user manual online. Do you know where I could find this info?

  • @loopop

I didn't have the manual as of the making of this video, but as far as I know there are no preset mappings at all, rather, just like I assign the hotknob to a parameter in the video, you can assign a MIDI CC to a parameter (or a hotknob). So, it should work well (up to 128 parameters I guess), you just need to make the assignments manually, or use the built-in MIDI learn for the default Elektron CCs

Unfortunatle Eventide removed the "endless" Spill Over option from their last OS versions. They said it was causing issues with the device and they can't support this option. So either this is correct and was putting too much permanent load on the DSP or they recognized that this way the customers got more or less 4 parallel effects (with some limitations). As you said you could use the looper with endless spill over time plus an effect and two additional effects. So another option then is the Mooer Ocean Machine having two Delays, a Reverb and a Looper all at the same time which can be reconfigured in terms of routing on the fly while the effects are running. Of course the FX quality of Mooer can't compete with the Eventide ones.
