    Chris, Thanks. I saw the "Atlas" name on your backpack a month or two ago on one of your prior KZread videos and as I wasn't familiar with the name, I did research on Internet and discovered they were located in Scottsdale, AZ....just 3 miles from my home. Made an appointment and had a custom fitting of the Adventure backpack.and I LOVE IT! Retired my Anja bag in favor of the Atlas. Well done on sharing this bags great features.

    After seeing this video, I was sold on this bag. Versatile, carry-on compatible, not looking like a camera bag, hugely expandable, water resistant and rain cover included. I mean what's not to love? Was deciding between the Shimoda Explore 40 and this one. I tried on the Shimoda at the store, and while the upper part was really snug as they claim, the rather suitcase-like ICU kept poking in my lower back, unless I adjusted the backpack to a position where the hipbelt would come above my hips, so that was a no go. Ordered the Atlas since that one felt more like my kind of bag to begin with, and the guys at Atlas were really friendly, super quick delivery with a nice personal touch inside the box. Luckily it fits perfectly. Everything feels rock solid. Atlas should pay you for this video, Chris ;)

    I hadn't heard of Atlas before so thanks for the review. Looks like a great bag. I used to buy bags all the time, and then I settled on F-stop gear. I've been using my F-Stop Tilopa for 3 years now and I'm very happy with it. Saying that, this possibly looks like a bag that could get me to change...not that I'm unhappy with my F-stop, but it's nice to get a new bag every now and again.

    That looks like an amazing pack Chris, though currently fully loaded too heavy for me. For days out with the family I like the Lowepro Photo Hatchback 22L AW. When I’m out by myself then I use either the MindShift Gear Rotation 180 Horizon (quick access without carrying the camera in my hands), or the Manfrotto Pro Light 3N1-26 PL (takes more than one body in a small bag), or the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW (good for carrying several bigger M43rds lenses when you don’t need to carry extra clothes) depending on what I’m photographing. Yes my wife says I have more bags than her 😂.

    My favorite bag is the WANDRD PRVKE 21. It is a smaller bag than the Atlas (though there is a larger version available) Like the Atlas it is expandable, low profile, accommodates gear, computer, food, clothing and other essentials. Critically, it offers side access to camera gear. The harness system is definitely not as nice as the Atlas. It is less appropriate than the Atlas for wilderness trekking but a better choice for urban travel and makes an excellent daily carry as well.

    Great vid. I’m using an fstop ajna and lowepro whistler. I never really enjoy using the fstop. Found it lacks quality and padding. The whistler is a far better built bag and holds weight better. I wish I’d pick one of these up instead of the fstop. Nice job mate 👍🏻😊

    I particularly love the expandability of this pack. Seems like a perfect fit for outdoor adventures. Less so for travel though. The lack of side access to my camera gear is a deal killer for me. I'm not going to set this thing down on the ground in the streets of Old Delhi, for example, get trampled or covered in cow dung. Side access lets me drop my pack off of a shoulder to access what I need without exposing the contents to dirt and theft. In wilderness, I could possibly drop both shoulder straps and rotate it to the front using the hip belt but that is too slow and awkward for urban travel. FWIW, the low profile when it isn't expanded is a positive. If Atlas changes this in a revision, it makes it more like every other bag and less appealing to me personally.

  • @vlado29

    @vlado29

    Exactly my thoughts... Looks like a great bag, I love the slim profile when not loaded and the expandability. But I hate backpacks with bag access to the camera compartment. So I hope they will make a version with that slim profile and side access, would be exactly great for a mirrorless with 3 lenses :)

    I also have this bag luv it . If one thing i wish they change is make the shoulder straps a little wider at the end that rest under the armpit there the narrowest ive seen on a camera bag . If you dont have the pack adjusted right they will bite in . I am currently looking at the shimoda action x50. Have you got a chance to try this bag?

    Up until now I use the Fstop Sukha - sometimes with and sometimes without the ICU. Have you ever tested the backpacks of fstop-gear and can you give a comparison? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the atlas? I really love that I can take out all the camera related stuff and use it as a large backpack for multiday hikes/ bivaouc tours etc. And quite frequently I just throw the camera into my "Deuter Guide 35+" together with all the other stuff when I do more serious mountaineering or just do not need the space of the Sukha. What I realy hate about the Sukha though is the fact, that it is not compatible with the Peak Design Capture clip. Does the Atlas offer something to attach Skis, ice axes, hiking poles, ropes etc? I am always on the search for a backpack that really suits well the combination of photography and mountaineering.

    Hey Lukas, great questions. I have asked reviewers like Chris to stay away from making direct comparisons between Atlas Packs and other bags on the market. I want viewers to understand the benefits of the packs and judge them on their own merits without disparaging other brands that Chris has used and supported in the past. In answer to your questions... The idea behind the Athlete Pack is to bridge the gap between the the world of outdoors and camera bags made by camera bag companies. I think you'll find that the pack will perform as well or better than what you currently have. - Of note --> If you have gripped bodies and large lenses they will need to be stored flat (as Chris mentioned). The Athlete Pack has a much slimmer camera core and much more expandability for non-camera gear than anything else on the market. It makes for a great mountaineering / photography pack. - Yes, the Peak Design Capture Clip fits :-) - Regarding how the packs perform in the snow --> There's a great review by @chilledmoose from @carryology that covers this exact topic. Do a google search and give it a read. Feel free to DM or text us 602-345-1444 if you have any questions. Thanks :-).

    AtlasPacks Great answer - right what Chris stated in his video. I shoot with Olympus like Chris does. So that should be not an issue at all. And I appreciate the attitude to not make comparisons against other brands - however I will somehow have to make the decision whether it is justified to spend the money on aother backpack. But I will check out the review on the other channel later and then come back with my questions - I hope that gives me enough information to form a decision. If customer support is like Chris said and you showed here, this would be a large plus :) Looking forward to researching more about Atlas packs.

    Chris Eyre-Walker I thought that would probably be the case. It always seems to be the way, which I find a bit odd when the bags are supposedly designed for photographers!? That was one of the reasons I opted for f-stop, as every review I saw on KZread spoke about how weather resistant their bags are... Mine most certainly is not! It is pretty comfortable, but your atlas bag looks like a more snug fit.

I don't have a ton of camera gear (I own a Fuji with 2-3 lenses and a tripod), but I'd like to do the West Highland Way in Scotland this summer with my girlfriend (if everything's gone back to normal by then, that is). It is a 7-9 day hike, and I was wondering if you think one could fit a 2-person tent, a sleeping back, a sleeping mat, clothes and food for 2-3 days in the Athlete, or I should look for the Adventure? Thanks in advance :)

    Uh. Tough one. I reckon, for two people you’ll be better off with the Adventure. But if she’s also carrying stuff (half the tent, her own mat and her own sleeping bag) then the Athlete will do. If you have to carry all the food for 7-9 days, then I’d say go with the Adventure. As that alone will be half the weight of your stuff.

    @@chriseyrewalker Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! From what I've read on that hiking path, it's possible to buy groceries every two to three days. Also, how convenient is it to have things strapped on the outside of the Athlete and the Adventure? Because even if there isn't enough room inside the Athlete, I could strap things on the outside of the bag.

    Looks like an amazing all-in-one bag for adventurous photography trips. The website mentions this is a carry on bag (thank God for this), and I ask myself if this is still the case when you use of the full potential of this bag (I've watched the video where Caleb stuffs this bag almost to the max), because it gets really big. Ever got rejected as a carry on boarding a plane? What do you do, when you only have this one bag with you, and no ICU to take your expensive photography equipment on the plane while you have to check in your bag?.....Just some thoughts.....

  • @AtlasPacks

    @AtlasPacks

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Sander. The simple answer is to pack in such a way that you can easily remove an item from the front of the pack. Pulling out a sleeping bag or mattress pad is actually much easier than pulling out the entire ICU and much safer for your gear as ICU's have no top-side protection. Moreover, when you pull out the ICU you risk alerting the airline to how much weight you are actually bringing aboard.

    My current backpack of choice for daytrips is the lowepro flipside trek bp 450 aw, and it's seemingly _almost_ good enough without too many compromises for daytrips, for now. I've reserved the top pocket for lunch and various small items which aren't camera related, the outer pocket is where I stuff my camelbak(s) (I sweat a lot, so I routinely bring 1 or 2 3l camelbaks with me). If I'm honest, it's still too small, I bring along a d500, a 18-200 and 10-20mm, a few filters etc and a p1000 and a few other minor things, and the p1000 has to go in the top pocket as well now. That, and the fact I apparently sweat through the back of the bag, and I'd like to have more space to do more than just daytrips (so, tent, sleeping bag etc), means I'm looking for alternatives. I'm wondering if the Athlete'd do, or if I should perhaps look more towards the Adventure pack. Have you tested that one out, or just the Athlete?

  • @chriseyrewalker

    @chriseyrewalker

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yep, looking at the Lowepro I’d say the Atlas Packs will be MUCH more comfortable to carry. They are proper backpacks that are also great camera bags. And not the other way around. Athlete or Adventure is a tough one. I mostly use the Athlete because it’s carry on compliant and I almost always fly to projects. If you’re flying a lot then I’d say the Athlete will be better. If you’re shooting mostly around your place and driving to locations before hiking, then the Adventure is great. It’s huge. And will fit a LOT of extra gear.

  • @janmartinmathiassen6265

    Tbh I didn't find the lowepro to be uncomfortable to carry at all, in fact I'd say it was damn near perfect for my use, at the very least as a daytrip kind of backpack which doesn't need space for tents etc. It's a teeny tinsy bit on the small side for what I'm carrying around with me, though, so I'm still looking for a tiny step up in this regard. But I guess this means I'll have a bit of a talk with the local photography store to ask them if they've heard of Atlas bags, and if they haven't, if they can look into it and see if they like what they see as well. That way I can test it out before I hand over the cash, and see more first hand which of the editions would be best for me. Thanks for the heads up though!

    Hi Jan -- So your current gear setup will easily fit in the Athlete Pack. I would not recommend the Adventure Pack given what you have shared above.The Adventure Pack is designed for camera gear loads 2-4x more than your current setup. In comparison to your 450 the Athlete Pack has a very similar footprint with the option to run much slimmer -- this is really why photographer like Chris love the pack, it's not a huge brick sitting on your back. Feel free to connect if I can help out with anything else. You can DM @atlaspacks on instagram or send me a text at 602-345-1444. Thanks, Allan.

    That's the thing, I'm actually looking for not just a replacement for what I have now, but a proper step up. I'm not going to be bringing this along on planerides etc, so size isn't that big of a problem, rather the opposite. I also think I'd prefer the full back opening rather than the partial back opening, etc, but I'd prefer to be able to handle the two in person and do that kind of comparison myself. Sadly I'm in Norway, and the store I usually go to isn't stocking either of these so I'll have to wait a bit before I take the leap, hopefully I can encourage them to take a look and evaluate if they like either or both of them.

    I've tried that but always found it quite annoying to get to my gear. Especially once you load a little more than just 2 lenses into the 'foam storage pouch'. Dedicated camera backpacks are definitely what I'd recommend, but then again it depends what on your style of photography too.

    To be fair, you also keep a fair bit of your equipment in those orange pouches etc you use (I forget what those are called, but they always fascinate me :P), which probably fixes a few of the usability issues you otherwise might've noticed. Either that or your usecase is just that much more focused on the wildcamping etc aspect that it really is the best setup for you.

    I was really interested, but two things are stopping me from buying it : 1. If you're outside of the US, the total cost will be problematic (shipping worldwide is free, but import taxes aren't). Total cost will reach USD450 for a delivery in France. 2. I'm not sure of those huge ATLAS logos everywhere, specially visible on the back ; logos are fine, but that's not logo here, that's advertising.

    Hi. Great question. There is no measurable impact related to the water bladder. Even with the pack empty you don't feel the water. The Athlete Pack has an internal frame along with an overbuilt harness system that includes load-lifter to help stabilize the pack. Plus the water bladder is suspended (vs flopping around loosely) on a hangtag tucked into the top of the pocket.

  • @chriseyrewalker

    @chriseyrewalker

    That's the beauty of it. It can be taken as carry-on, as long as you don't load it to the rim. It's about 20 litres when it's not 'expanded' and then turns into 40 litres when it is. So, I take all the essentials (electronics, cameras etc.) as carry-on in the 20-litre bag and check in the other stuff and when I arrive on location I can pack this bag for a multi-day trek if needed.
