    I just got mine last week. Same color scheme. It will be carrying my Sony a9, Zeiss Batis 18mm, 40mm and 85mm lenses, flash, radio trigger, tripod, filters, etc. for a month in SE Asia this summer. I haven't set it up yet because my local dealer was sold out of the 18mm when I tried to buy it last weekend, so I had to put in a special order: also, I'm pondering whether or not to take the a9's vertical grip, which also affects the configuration.

    Hi Matthew, Nice review. Just subbed. I also bought this bag a couple months ago, not only because the things you mentioned in the vid, but also I like to support entrepreneurs like Allan who responds to all messages. He’s keeping things small so he can personalize his service with all his customers. Great guy and great product! Only grip is the laptop compartment but I found a fix around for my 15.6” laptop as it doesn’t fit in the front well (sticks out and can be scratched up or damage exposed). I put on top of the camera gear where the back opens up to access your camera gear. The big zippers design allows expansion to stuff my laptop and still be able to close it. Just put a laptop sleeve to prevent from scratching. I plan to add a mesh stitching to the back panel that opens up so I just need to slide my laptop into it. The weight distribution works better this way for me. Other than that, I must agree with you that in the beginning, I wasn’t sure about this pack because of the price but when you compare it to other quality packs and add the camera cube, it’s nearly the same. But this pack is thoughtful and performs the most important aspect of any pack (for me) which is comfort. If you pay attention to the details, the foam is quality (strong and durable) and the shoulder and waist belt is thick (for good reasons) but not wide. Other straps are wide but thin, making it uncomfortable for long hauls and/or when carrying heavy loads. For versatility, it has a narrow design (tall but not wide) so when you shrink it down with the straps for a day pack use to move from home to work to coffee shops, it doesn’t stand out like a college backpacker or photographer. I got the all black color version for low profile look. There are more details that I think is worth mentioning as it makes the design so thoughtful such as: 1) spandex band (?) on the shoulder straps for the load lifters and sternum straps that is there to roll up the excess straps; 2) the straps for holding water bottle and/or tripod can be reverse and clipped backward to the back to make it a slot to slide onto the handle of a carry on suitcase (if you need to bring more than this pack) 3) the front soft spandex pocket where the big logo Atlas is located can be used for water bladder if this is a requirement instead of the side pocket; 4) the 3 pockets that make up the flap that goes over the top loading space is designed such that they don’t eat into each other’s space like most (if not all) packs. It expands out and has large deceptive volume that’s really useful if you want quick access while one pocket is on the inside is good for items such as wallets and passports where you want more security 5) the core camera structure allows the pack to stand straight without tilting if weight is distributed correctly. Because it is built in, you don’t need 2 layers when an external ICU. If not in use, you have more capacity for travel/non-gear as the padded dividers can be removed Overall, as you mentioned in the vid, if you consider all the comfort, low profile but thoughtful design, quality all around, and if you can afford it, it’s really a great perfect pack. And with all black design, I get away with taking it to office for daily professional use, unless I have board or investor meetings and I need to wear a suit and tie, then I just take out my laptop and bring a compact laptop sleeve. I highly highly recommend this pack to those who can afford this price point. Atlas also has another larger Adventure pack if you need more capacity but it’s too big but has separate laptop compartment, torso adjustment, and more volume. I’m really glad that PD 45l pack was out of stock and I ended up choosing the Atlas Athlete pack instead. Cheers.

    Interesting they have went with a fixed insert as if it was removable and had an option of a smaller insert, then you could adapt it towards your particular use. Looking at a slightly bigger rucksack for day to day use and considering moving up from the Lowepro 350 AW to the the 450AW. Great to see you promoting more upcoming workshops too

    Honestly, I am super glad they done it fixed. I used to use the Anja by F-stop which was able to take out. Less padding, more moving parts and when its not fixed the back has to be larger to accommodate. Therefore less room for luggage and other equipment. For me, it's perfect you can read more about it on my blog. Expensive, but suits a perfect travel niche out there!

  • @matthewstorerphotography

    @matthewstorerphotography

    Yeah i would agree. If you just travel with this backpack you put your clothes or whatever in the main compartment and the other stuff in the top. Everytime I use this bag it will have camera equipment but will vary how much I have. I had 50% camera gear and 50% clothes for my egypt trip inside the fixed compartment and worked perfectly.

    Did you know that the zipped pouch on the side is actually for a water bladder system? There’s a hole in the top of the pouch for the tube to run, which comes out of the top of the bag. I’ve been using it with a 2L Aquapack Force...very easy to insert.

    Great review. You made a lot of great points about this bag except one. You say one of the things you like about the bag is that it does not look like a camera backpack which I do get BUT as soon as you put a tripod on the side of the bag it advertises to everyone that is exactly what it is .. That said it is a fantastic bag and I will be ordering one. Thanks for the review it was very informative.

  • @matthewstorerphotography

    @matthewstorerphotography

    No problem. I totally agree with putting a tripod on the side making it instantly look like a camera backpack. But I normally check in my tripod for work. I normally hate a camera looking backpack at airports, buses and taxis because they just add 10% extra for some reason. Walking around I dont usually walk around a city with a tripod to the side. Only when I head back out for golden hours. But out in the wilderness jt doesn't really matter. A bear will attack you with or without a tripod hahaha...

Honestly, I am not sponsored or anything regarding this bag or comment. But I had to same feeling about the price. But two things. Its expensive for a reason - its god damn good. Secondly its a 7-10 year investment. So therefore it $40-50 a year towards a bag you will use all the time. Its not much. Worst comes to worse, it will hold its value to sell second hand!

    Fantastic infomercial!! Think he likes the product? Protruding tripod would be a photographer’s dead give-away. Doesn’t exactly comport w/minimalist (Egypt) approach. More/custom dividers - cut up a yoga mat to your spec and attach hook/loop strips where needed. Putting gear in a diaper bag will also deter theft😁.

    Hi Matthew, I'm curious about something off topic from this video. I think I've been following your channel for nearly a year now, and if I'm not mistaking, a year ago you were conducting your photography in a part time capacity because you had a regular day job. This year you've been very prolific in your travels and photography, (Kyrgyzstan, Albania and most recently Egypt). Did you at some point go the route of becoming a completely professional photographer?

  • @matthewstorerphotography

    @matthewstorerphotography

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Stephen! Yeah that is fine of course! I am actually still conducting it in a partial manner. I still have a full time job where I work around 210 hour a month! These trips I actually just took leave to go and photographer and get some experience filming and making short films (which get released this week) I would love to become a full time photographer but currently I don't earn anywhere near enough money to make that happen! So this year I am putting SO MUCH effort in to get a foundation set to hopefully come a full time photographer next year. But lacking that steady month income we all need to survive!
