In this week's episode I discuss my initial thoughts after testing the Atlas Packs Athlete Backpack. I've only had an opportunity to use this photography backpack for a short time, but it has quickly become one of my favorite camera bags I've testing in 2018 and has me wondering, is this the best mirrorless camera bag?

I used this pack for my trip to Yosemite. On my long day I carried my camera and 3 lenses along with water, food and clothes. Our hike was 17 miles so I was wearing the pack for about 10 hours over some very rough terrain. It was extremely comfortable and handles weight very well. I still had space for additional gear if I decided on an over-night trip. The big part is that it does not look like a camera bag. For traveling it does fit under a plane seat. The pack is expensive but since it can expand or contract to a smaller bag, it is like having several size packs. Also, as the video said, all accessories come with the pack so it is less expensive in the long run. Bomb proof and well thought out.

Hey Mark. Awesome first look and initial overview of the Athlete Pack. A few things of note: 1. Loved that you started with the non-camera gear sections of the pack. Crazy to think that no other camera bag companies make camera bags with enough room for non-camera gear. The front section of the pack can expand up to 30 liters. The camera core sections measures about 10 liters (with the Origami Pocket in the open position). 2. As Mark mentioned the pack comes in two size heights. A regular and a tall. You can also select from 3 different size waist belts. Details on which size pack and belt will work best for your build is on our site. 3. Also glad you mentioned the depth of the pack - this is very important. **On the Athlete Pack gripped bodies must be placed in flat (or the grip removed). Bodies such as a 5D or D850 also fit and can be stored with lenses mounted. This pack is by no exclusive to mirrorless systems. It will easily hold a Sony FS5 (broken down) or the Canon 1DX 4. Thx for the kind words on the dividers. I spent a lot of time grinding to get them just right :-). ----------- ----- --- --- -- PS: I'm noticing more and more people taking the frame out. I've also had a number of requests from taller customers about letting them switch out to a shorter size frame. Over the past few weeks I've been testing this setup in my personal pack and have become a fan as well (especially when I travel). Of note.... There is a small downside as the top of the frame no longer tucks into the little flaps on the inside of the pack (b/c it's shorter). Overall not a big deal but wanted to make people aware. PSS: If anyone is interested I would be happy to make a custom height frame for your pack at no additional charge --> But you must provide me with insight and feedback regarding how the frame performs and functions. Cheers and thanks, Allan

The bag looks like a workhorse and I'd consider grabbing one. My only source of discontent is the emblazoned large logos everywhere on the bag. I mean there's not enough gaffers tape to cover the logo on the outside or inside. A simple A on center or corner in my opinion would be a more aesthetically minimalistic approach.

For long hikes you would do better with an Osprey or Gregory pack with a camera cube insert. They are more comfortable and are designed to have air flow on your back to prevent excessive sweating. I went for the Osprey Kamber 42L with the F-Stop Shallow ICU medium (I have Fujifilm gear, so the shallow ICU is perfect).

@@zemekiel Thank you. But in Patagonia, I make base Camp where I stay for one month minimum to have enough time to take the shots as the weather down here is very uncertain.. To get to certain places, I have to move some 100 kg for 2 persons, 2 big backpacks, food and my photobackpack. To get to the different base camps, I spend, depending the place, between 1 to 4 days. sometimes with the help of boats, horses, and others. The ideal backpack would be the Atlas Pack Athlete o another one I bought recently in Germany from the following compahy: compagnon-bags.com/de/shop/fotorucksaecke/243/element-backpack. From the base camps, I need a good Day pack for cameras and clothes in case of bad weather as well as food. The mentioned packs are ideal.

I’m looking forward to a comparison review too. I have a Lumix mirrorless system with 3 lenses. I do a lot of cycling out in the countryside so currently use a Mindshift Photocross 10 slingshot bag but it only has room for camera gear and nothing else. The Atlas and Shimoda both interest me for photography while cycling and hiking but they are both very expensive. I like the minimalist logo design of the Shimodo but they don’t ship to Japan at the moment.

Thanks for a great review. I currently own an Fstop Loka and have had it for several years. It worked well for me, but I have switched to mirrorless as well and have been searching for a bag that can expand when needed but slim down when not filled with alot of gear. The Fstop maintains its boxy shape all the time and is big when just carrying a couple camera items. This bag looks awesome, my only concern is the internal camera unit not removing from the bag. I fear the time I board a flight and there is no room for my fully stocked bag to fit and then being forced to check it. With the removable ICU's that can be easily resolved, but without the Atlas being removable, that could pose a problem. One solution would be to carry a small bag of some sort to throw the camera body and lenses in if that were to happen. This looks like a great bag and may work perfectly for what I need. I wasn't aware of this brand, so thanks for the video.

Mark - you have done a ton of bag reviews the past year...Thank you. Do you think you and your sponsors would mind if you did a compare and contrast. As I own both a Shimoda 60 and 40 and love both. I use either depending on load out of kit I am taking, plus need for jackets, gloves, etc. Obviously this Atlas Pack offers the best of both worlds at least for a 40L, but I got to say I lean more towards the Shimoda 60 simply because the difference between the two is so marginal. On a plan, if packed well, there is virtually no difference. Any rate, doing a comparison along with your impressions would be, I think, appreciated by all your subscribers. Thanks.

Last week I bought an Atlas Athlete (thanks Allan!) after using an F-Stop Ajna for two years. A few comparison thoughts: Where the Athlete is better: A) Mark is right - the Athlete's ability to cinch down size is a real plus. While I love the Ajna, I have a large ICU with it and when you don't need to carry lots of gear, you have to swap out the ICU to a smaller one to shrink it down. Otherwise, the Ajna stays a larger dimension due to its ICU and feels much bulkier even though both bags are roughly the same size. B) I also second Mark's comment that the removable waist belt is a plus - sometimes you don't want to look like "serious camera gear guy" all the time and the waist belt screams that to everyone else. Also, the removable waist belt is helpful when you are trying to put the bag in an overhead storage compartment on a smaller plane. C) The Athlete's side pockets are more useful and stretchy than the Ajna. They are good for tripods or water bottles or whatever. Mark's earlier Ajna video where he calls out the Ajna's method of carrying tripods in the side pockets as almost an afterthought is spot on. The Ajna's side pockets aren't really expandable, and the zippers risk scratching your carbon fiber tripod. D) The Athlete's shoulder straps, waist belt, and carrying handle are all beefier and more padded than the Ajna. While the Ajna is not uncomfortable, the Athlete feels much easier on the hips and the shoulders due to the padding. The Ajna's carrying handle in particular feels like a joke, but thankfully mine has never torn or ripped. E) The Athlete's zippers are much easier to use than the Ajna. The Athlete's zippers open/close more smoothly and they don't get caught on corners or around bends like those on the Ajna. F) Atlas is far more customer-responsive than F-Stop. I had to wait 3 months to get my Ajna. The comments on F-Stop's Facebook page are ridiculous to read. In contrast, Allan at Atlas was responding to my emails early on Sunday morning last week, within hours of me wanting to change my order. G) The Atlas' waist pockets are really handy. I'm a big waist pocket guy, and I even bought separate Molle pockets for my Ajna when I first got it. That Atlas designed these into the Athlete is a big plus. In addition, the Molle straps on the Ajna are very hard to use due to their slanted design on the waist. H) The Laptop compartment on the Athlete is great and padded. My 15" MacBook Pro fits in like a glove. The Ajna doesn't really have a laptop compartment, so you're on your own. Where is the Ajna is better: I) The Ajna with a large ICU simply swallows more gear than the Athlete. As indicated by Atlas elsewhere in this thread, I cannot store in the Athlete a mounted DSLR like my D850 in it upright or with a lens mounted. I have to store it unmounted, and it takes up a decent chunk of space (I have an L-bracket on at all times.). I typically carry the trinity with me (which, without hoods, just barely fits in the Athlete), but everything else camera-related has to be stored in the bag outside of the main camera compartment. In contrast, the Ajna can carry all three lenses, the camera, and more, plus hoods and with various options for mounted or unmounted lenses to my camera. J) The Ajna is made of much tougher material than the Athlete. One can tell from comparing them that the Ajna will likely shrug off scuffs, tears, prickly bushes, and all else. The Ajna also can weather downpours (I took mine to Iceland and went under waterfalls unscathed.) The Hypalon bottom is also awesome. The Athlete isn't frail, but you can tell it simply isn't ready to rough and tumble nearly as much as the Ajna. I'd say the Athlete is more common of typical camera bags for material sturdiness, but the Ajna is in a league of its own for toughness. K) The Athlete has a lot of long excess steps that hang off your back several inches below the bottom of the bag. The Ajna in contrast has lots of stretchy loops one can use to bundle and tie up excess straps. If Atlas is designing Gen2 of the Athlete, then this would be my top thing to improve. L) The Ajna's zippers are harder to use than the Athlete's, but they are bigger and beefier. You get the sense that the zipper teeth are not going to get ruined for decades, whereas the Athlete's zippers are more basic. Also, the Athlete's zippers at the base of the camera door flap have teeth that are stretched out every time you open the camera door - I wonder whether these teeth will eventually give out over time. TL;DR: Basically I prefer the Atlas Athlete over the F-Stop Ajna, but the Ajna is better under certain circumstances. The Athlete is better if you want to carry a smaller amount of camera gear, want a bag that can cinch down and lose its waist belt, carry a tripod better, and overall is easier on the body. The Ajna is better if you are going into a real rough tumble area where tears are a risk or if you need to carry gobs of camera gear or mounted lenses (DSLR). Overall, I find myself reaching for the Athlete more often.

It would be reaaly strange due to that zipper is really in the path of water when you are in a rain, and the rainfly just can't protect the backpanel of the backpack. Another issue with this backpack is the access to the main compartment, I would like a quick access to my gear and I would try to not keep my camera outside the backpack when I'm walking (mainly if I'm in a urban environment). Do you have some advice about this two issues? Thanks a lot!! Best Regards

How far would you hike without the waist belt? I have the Adventurer and have now been debating something else for a day pack setup, although I can scrunch down the Adventurer pretty good. Even a little more if the frame is out. But I don't know how far I'd want to go without the frame, let alone with out the belt. I got the Adventurer because they suggested it because I always had a battery grip on my Fuji X-T1. But now that I don't shoot sports or portrait stuff anymore I really don't need it for landscapes.

too bad Atlas and Shimoda couldn't have a baby...that might be the ideal pack. I like the side opening back flap to access gear on Shimoda instead of the Atlas back opening to access your equipment (one giant "lip"). But then I like everything else about the Atlas.

Hi Mark. Thanks for your review. This seems an excellent bag. After looking at Atlas Packs web site, I still have a few question on options: 1) what is the difference between Athlande and Adventure belt options? Both are available for the Athlete bag. Which would be preferable (given that you can take out the belt, as you mentionned)? 2) why is there a Large and Medium option for the Athlete bag? Does this has to do with the removable frame you mention at the end of your review?

  • @pierrejohnson3651

    @pierrejohnson3651

Got the answers from the AI on the web site. Belt sizes are explained on the FAQ of the web site. And Medium or Large options depend of your height. If you are over 5 feet 11 choose Large. Medium has 3 to 5 liters less of non-camera space. That still leaves alot of space it seems. Which size do you show on the video, Mark?

  • @scottsater

Mark, Could you please answer this question for me? Perhaps I missed this on your amazing review: But is this a regular or tall that you showed? And do you know if BOTH sizes allow for full length non-camera gear storage from top to bottom? I know that I am going to fit the medium, and I want to make sure that I have enough non-gear space for my Himalayan Treks. Thanks so much!!

When I saw the Shimoda 40 review I thought this would be my bag but the more and more I compare them to the Atlas I'll tend towards the Atlas Athlete. Seems like the 40L with the expendable material (I already watched other videos) is crazy. You really can stuff everything for a 3 day trip in it. I'm not the biggest fan of ICUs but Shimoda looked really great but this origami style seems like they rocked it out of the park. How are you're thoughts about the Athlete vs Explorer 40? I think you probably can't go wrong with any of both but I'm more and more leaning towards the Athlete (although I really like the Shimoda colours ... damnit!!) :-D PS: Great video as always!

This doesn't look great. Can I remove the whole inner unit and replace it with an ICU? If not, I guess the best option would be to replace the foam and get thinner foam dividers elsewhere

Love the reviews on the bags Mark! Got my Adventurer after seeing you earlier review. Debating getting a Athlete for a day pack kinda setup. In case anyone is curious on how much can be put in these bags, here is another review on the Athlete bag where the guy even talks about camping gear. I was curious about that with my Adventurer and possibly taking it on a 2 night 3 day backpacking trip. Makes me wonder what all can be put in it now. I wouldn't have to worry about water in Michigan much, as we have a ton. So I don't have to carry as much making room for other stuff. If you don't want this link in here just take it down, or whatever. I understand. Just trying to share so people see what kinda space it has. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZOL1qNueJCtj9Y.html

Mark, I have greatly enjoyed your reviews of camera backpacks. They have been informative and helpful to me. Most camera backpacks are good at holding camera gear but have no thought put into carrying the other stuff outdoor/nature, etc photographers need to carry. On the basis of your review of the Atlas Athlete I was about to pull the trigger on purchasing one but by pure chance I have came across another brand I had not heard that appears to be out of Europe, NYA-EVO (www.nya-evo.com/). It appears to resolve some of the shortcomings of the Shimoda's lack of a place for a water bottle, etc. This might be a bag you may want to look at doing a review of. This You-Tube video from a photographer in the United Kingdom is very praise worthy of it, kzread.info/dash/bejne/nX5rk7GumM6eprA.html.
