How I Travel Internationally with Camera Gear

This is how I travel internationally with camera gear and using the help of the Atlas Athlete Pack from Atlas packs has been a huge win. Your traveling situation, especially through customs and security may not always be this easy, but packing your gear like this may help.
This has been a tremendous camera backpack that offers so much more space than just your camera gear. According to the website the Atlas Athlete features a 40 liter expandable shell and was awarded "Best Camera Bag for Travelers" by National Geographic.

    Excellent guide, thanks! I got mine in the mail yesterday. Needed help fitting it, got in touch with atlaspacks on instagram, they did a quick video call to check things out and are now shipping me a different size to try out and decide which one I would like to keep if any. I'd say this is amazing customer service!

    Another reason why I also had to go back through customs is that I left my phone on the plane. Security graciously rescanned my backpack just to make sure they didn't see the phone just in case I had just thrown it in there. They were pretty much able to determine via the scan "for the most part" the contents of the bag. Big props to the customs and security agents in Belize, as well as Southwest customer service for retrieving my phone so that I could jump on that next flight over to the island.

    Hey, so did you have any issues with bringing spare batteries aboard the plane as a carry on? Or did you check those in? I've heard some places don't allow you to carry extra batteries onto the plane. I know, odd but it has happened to a few friends of mine. I guess it depends on the airline or the country.

  • @KevinRossRN

    @KevinRossRN

    5 жыл бұрын

    Such a great question. No hassle at all to carry those on. I had 8 total in those pouches. 6 FW50's for the a6500. 2 NP-F550's for my monitor. I also had 2 batteries for the GoPro. However, I did have to take the battery pack out of my Away suitcase. I checked the bag (I was going to anyway), but the battery pack that comes with it had to be pulled out and carried on. Even though the battery organizers are not hardshell or necessarily leak proof, it seemed as if they were fine with them since they were all together and in that pouch. YMMV of course, but I went through several times without issue.

    Very informative review and thanks for all of the time put into the review. I had two questions that I was hoping you might be able to share details on... 1. Do you have any experience with removing the frame and storing it under the seat of a smaller plane? Specifically more regional jets.... I typically keep a Pelican 1510 above in the overhead and my backpack at my feet under the seat in front of me... 2. Do you feel comfortable keeping your laptop in the "sleeve" and traveling with it in that manner? I am curious as it seems a little lacking... Thanks again!

  • @KevinRossRN

    @KevinRossRN

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would imagine the frame would fit under the seat and I have been on smaller planes with it, however I didn’t remove the frame itself and store it under the seat. And, I’ve often traveled with a laptop and do feel as if it’s pretty secure in there. But there have been a couple of occasions where I did take it out when storing it under the seat. First, because I was working on it during the flight. And second, sometimes that seat is a little tight and there is quite a bit of weight being applied, depending on what’s in the bag.

  • @JasonCohenphoto

    @JasonCohenphoto

    @@KevinRossRN Hey thanks for the quick reply. I actually bought the exact same bag, just debating whether or not to return it before use. I removed the frame which seems to make quite a difference on height. On the laptop, I guess I'm more mean using it for work and keeping the laptop in there at all times. Meaning loading it in and out of a car, into different locations, etc. Honestly the non-full sleeve is my biggest pause with the bag

  • @KevinRossRN

    @KevinRossRN

    2 жыл бұрын

    Gotcha on the sleeve. I mean, I do use this around town and often leave the laptop on there. Might be a moot point to have another slim sleeve for the laptop that fits inside the bag’s sleeve, however I know that’s an extra step. But I agree that the initial lack of a flap was a question of mine as well. It’s years later however and I still only use this bag.

    Kevin Ross it’s going to be such an upgrade from my current backpack as well as an upgrade in safety. I’m planning on removing the ball head and possible the the legs that extend. Is it necessary to get a volt converter vs a standard euro set of plug ins?

  • @KevinRossRN

    @KevinRossRN

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Mcroberg Depends on where you are headed. In my situation, the converter was a plus since there were power outages during the trip as the utilities were being upgraded where we were staying and it had built-in protection from the surges. If you are more interested in the plug adapters that are not converters, I would just double check that it's capable of protecting against power surges.

I think Atlas is the best one because it fits more in a smaller space and lighter pack and the camera compartment is completely separate of the general space. In the others, when you open the back door and you have the small icu inside, you can see directly there all the stuff you’ve loaded above the icu.
