@KevinRossRN5 күн бұрын
@Jay-eg8md well, there is definitely going to be some experimenting here. Once you’ve gotten a decent mic then it’s mainly going to making sure you’ve got the right levels…not too low and definitely not too “hot” where you’re clipping your audio. Post production is where it all happens and I can say that it’ll depend on the voice. I was doing a podcast with three of us and I had to edit a little bit on my track, my other (male) cohost needed some more tweaking, but the female host on the show didn’t need anything. I didn’t touch her voice. Because of her mic and her vocal pitch, it was near perfect.

Hello kevin, i want to ask, For daily use and regular video editing, which prefer mba 2 base or better choose mba 1 base model? Please ur recommendation thanksss
@KevinRossRN12 күн бұрын
Well, for daily (non-video editing) use, either one is going to be great. I still use the M2 MBA every single day for office tasks and my wife is using the M1 MBA every day for the same thing. As I might have mentioned in the video (it’s been awhile since I made this), but for regular video editing these machines will be able to handle some sustained workflows, but it really depends on what camera footage and video editors you’re working with. I’d still recommend a MBP for regular editing, but if you have to use the MBA then at this point I’d go for the M2. I would recommend upgraded memory if you can. Otherwise you may be finding yourself having to close programs or restarting the machine more regularly to have a smoother experience.

@KevinRossRN29 күн бұрын
No, 16GBs. I’d honestly recommend the extra memory for this type of work flow. Many people test these with base specs, but after you have the machine on and several apps running, you’re going to be experiencing some throttling. These machines are efficient, but for heavier tasks it’s really best to invest in a bit more memory if you want a solid experience.

I should do a video on this, but I did (somewhat) touch on this in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYR_pc-RlavOc6w.html Starting at about 8:15 in the video and then I show a workflow later on. Basically, before you get into the podcast content and you have your video recording and the audio being recorded, you just count down 3-2-1 and then clap. You’ll then sync up those spiked waveforms from the clap.

@KevinRossRNАй бұрын
@ArmyBarbie Well, that base model iMac (unfortunately) is going to struggle a bit. As far as the codec, just wondering about the camera footage. Also, are you doing a rough cut first, and then going back and adding effects? Also, have you tried transcoding the footage first in FCPX? It’ll take a little time to do depending on how long the timeline is, but it should help it run smoother. As far as the M3, it should chew through the timeline. Did you at least add a little extra memory to your build?

@KevinRossRNАй бұрын
@ArmyBarbie That codec should be pretty efficient to work with. I think when these machines first came out they were “screaming” through these timelines when compared with their predecessors. Aside from working with proxies and transcoding the footage before, just make sure you’re minimizing any other demands on the machine (closing other programs) due to that 8GBs of memory. With the constant iteration of these video editors they offer more features, but start to demand more from the machine. That spec of MBP should be just fine. It really should be a night and day experience because of the video processing capability in that particular chipset.

The extra memory will certainly help with Lightroom. It’s what I use and it’ll take a good portion of it. The quick videos will be fine on the MBA. The advantage of the MBP is the fan and that thermal envelope. For sustained workflows you’ll notice a difference, but with the shorter videos I doubt you’d even have that concern. Honestly I often recommend going with a little more memory. I don’t know anyone that has regretted it. I still use my M2 MBA every day and do some light editing from time to time. Will be using it for short (3-5 minute videos weekly) 1-2 timelines with sparse effects and minimal color grading in Resolve. Also using some Adobe AE. Down the line plan to use DJI Osmo pocket 3 4K footage (I am guessing 265 is a no go...) Good enough or should I swap it, if I can now, with the M2 16GB? Again, much appreciated for the non-nonsense comparison.

Thanks! So have you tested it with AE yet? As far as the OSMO those compressed files are probably going to give the machine a run, but you should be able to scrub through your timeline. The base model will hit that swap pretty quick, which you won’t notice until you start adding more to the timeline and then sprinkle in those effects…and of course if you’re running any other applications. I still use this device daily, but not so much for creative work. I may run some Lightroom or photoshop every now and again, but I will say that I’ve typically run several browsers with a hundred+ tabs open and the 16GBs hasn’t let me down. How can I sync my audio and video using my iPad? Thank you!
@KevinRossRN3 ай бұрын
Congrats on the podcast. Happy to have helped. So, I did do a video on this, but can’t recall the exact one. If you’re still recording the audio through the interface to the iPad and then the iPhone video is separate, I assume you have a video editing software you’re working with (or will). I would just take that audio clip from the iPad you recorded on and move that into your video editor, and then the video (with the raw audio) will be placed on top of the audio in the timeline. The easy way to sync this up is to clap really loud at the beginning before starting the show and then you can see these wave forms in the audio tracks from the iPad and the iPhone. Line up those spikes in the track, and then once they’re synced, then just lower the volume on the audio from the phone and you should still be synced up with the better audio from the iPad. Hopefully that is what you’re asking about. And if not, I’ll take another crack at it 😁

Another one in the books. Awesome!
Is this the free version?? Or do you recommend using a paid app.. I would just be using it for podcast editing.
GB does come with iPad and MacOS…no charge. I used GB for editing as my main editor for years until I moved over to Logic Pro.
What settings would you recommend for podcasting...? I would like to get the best that GarageBand has to offer. Thanks 🙏🏾
Are you recording with an iPad or computer? And, are you referring to the settings to use as far as when you’re editing? I will say that your microphone, breathing technique and especially the environment you’re recording in will make a difference.
@@KevinRossRNon iPad, using audio interface.. but was wondering if there is a setting to get the best podcast vocals... Thanks in advance 🙏🏾
Thank you thank you thank you🙏🏾

Did I pay for what?
Hey ! no more vidéo ? what happen ? I hope you are fine.
Hello kevin, i want to ask, For daily use and regular video editing, which prefer mba 2 base or better choose mba 1 base model? Please ur recommendation thanksss

Are you able to find a M1 Pro within the same budget. I’d just be concerned that if you’re really wanting to use AE on the air that you would be making some compromises.
@@KevinRossRN which mac do u recommend? m1 pro?
The Pro is going to be able to handle AE with ease. At this point you may even be able to find a M2 Pro that’s discounted.
@@KevinRossRN wow , thank you sir keep going 🔥.
@ArmanLeader my pleasure. Best of luck.
Your MBA is 8go ? How is it for video editing and sound production ?
Can I record 2 Mics one in the 3.5 Mic Input and the Line In separately ?
How do you pair/sync the audio and video together? or are they connected somehow through a cord so that you do not have to match up in post production?
I should do a video on this, but I did (somewhat) touch on this in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYR_pc-RlavOc6w.html Starting at about 8:15 in the video and then I show a workflow later on. Basically, before you get into the podcast content and you have your video recording and the audio being recorded, you just count down 3-2-1 and then clap. You’ll then sync up those spiked waveforms from the clap.
My frames keep dropping idk why ;(
What camera codec are you using, which Mac (specs), and are you using FCPX?
@@KevinRossRN thank you for replying! Please help me out lmao. I’m using the M1 8GB iMac, and i believe the codec for FCP is H.264 something like that? i also just ordered the M3 pro MacBook.
@@KevinRossRN yes i got the 18GB 512SSD i hope that’s enough. I didn’t understand computer specs before buying the iMac, so now it collects dust smh. I’m filming in 4K using the Sony ZV-E1. I use proxy on my 8GB MacBook and it works but takes days to edit 😂 so hopefully this new MacBooks works better. Is there anything i could do to the iMac?
@ArmyBarbie That codec should be pretty efficient to work with. I think when these machines first came out they were “screaming” through these timelines when compared with their predecessors. Aside from working with proxies and transcoding the footage before, just make sure you’re minimizing any other demands on the machine (closing other programs) due to that 8GBs of memory. With the constant iteration of these video editors they offer more features, but start to demand more from the machine. That spec of MBP should be just fine. It really should be a night and day experience because of the video processing capability in that particular chipset.
Careful with thunderbolt 4 hubs from Anker. I have learned they have compatibility issues ie with new Apple products. I had to replace my HUB due to this issue as Anker will not deal with the problem. I think they may not support Apple for some strange reason.
Thanks for sharing, and yes, there’s definitely a hang up with that Apple Silicon (specifically) hardware that seems to present with problems. I’m still using this hub today, but generally just for display, audio, and some accessories.

Heyy, I'm going to get a mac book for photo and video editing. Do you think I should get a mac book air 2024 with 16gb ram and 512 ssd, or rather the mac book pro 2024 with 8gb ram and with 512 ssd. Both cost about the same, but I haven't had a macbook yet, which is why I don't know so well about it.
What kind of video are you working with? And what about photos?
@@KevinRossRN I do sports photography. I just take pictures that I edit in Lightroom and videos that last about 1 minute. So nothing so special, but I would still like to have a powerful laptop on the go, even if I'm on vacation or something, for example.
I still haven’t upgraded my M1 MBP because everything I’ve thrown at it, it just tears right through it. But again, for your use case right now, the MBA.

What kind of external ssd do you have going there to be same as editing off internal. I heard one person talk about cfexpress b is fast enough to be edited directly off .but I wonder as a cf express card can't have same speeds as internal ssd on modern laptops..
In the video description I have the exact setup listed under External SSDs. I have two of the identical setups. They’ve been very reliable.
Is this all really necessary? I have an iPad but not a laptop. I have a dynamic mic but was gonna just record to garage band and record with my Sony camera but I’m so lost on what I can do with what I have.
You can use your iPad without an audio interface if it’s just you. You can certainly do a lot with what you have.
This is helpful thank you. I’d this is how we are recording audio with a usb mic and iPad how does the camera tie into or connect to all of this?
I would recommend just recording separately with the camera. Then, you’d take the audio tracks from the iPad and the video from the camera and drop all of those into a video editor. You’d remove the audio from the camera because the built in mic isn’t going to sound good at all, but it’s great to use it as a reference for the better quality you’re getting from the interface and iPad. Hopefully that makes sense.

If you have one of the M-series chipsets, that’s pretty much a no go. Some have tried on the M1 Mac mini, but you’re definitely at risk for bricking the machine.
How you think 8gb with new m4 will be enough? Some video editing, gaming.
Totally. Even with the updates in iOS where the programs are able to use more, I still think 8 would be fine.
My first camera was a Nikon coolpics then a cannon hf 500 and I’ve mostly replaced it with a lg v60 and a se2. Edit on Sony Vegas pro movie (older version) and VM editor on an older iPad Pro 2 (a10x). Nice setup for 1080 or 1440p video.
Whoa! That’s awesome. I’ve had a couple Nikon bodies for photos and loved them. It’s so interesting though because I do find myself just using what I have with me, which is my phone. It’s amazing how far we’ve come with these devices.
Does apps like Final Cut Pro run noticeably slower when running from external SSD? or it is negligible?
Well, you’re keeping the app on the internal, which takes about 3GBs, but all of the bundled media and really the bulk of what you’re working will live in the SSD, and I haven’t ever had any issues with speed.
@@KevinRossRN and what if i also move the entire application file to the external SSD?
@aminesmaeilnia you could, I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’ll really depend on that drive because the program will still be trying to access the internal and there’s going to be a bit of a bottleneck there.
Why would you curse an external ssd? What is your proof that internal storage is more reliable than external ssd one ? I can surely only say that internal storage will have less latencies and that is. Which is perfectly fine. I even suppose that external thunderbolt 4 ssd should be faster then poor M2 Air internal storage
Well, because it’s not just the advertised speed of the NVMe in the enclosure, but the communication protocol and the point of failure which is that it’s connected externally and not soldered to the board. However, it can still be a viable option for many use cases. I have many external enclosures that are still going strong.
Good evening Kevin! I'm looking for a MacBook for video editing and production. I have no experience in this at all and I'm just starting out. Which option would you recommend? Brand New MBA M2 (16GB / 512SSD) - $1279 or Refurbished MBP M3 PRO Chip (18GB / 512SSD). Thank you.
The Pro all the way. If you’re going to be using this for video editing, you’re going to want that fan and that larger thermal capability. I love these MBAs…I’ve actually been using mine all day, however for non-intensive tasks that is. I’m still rocking with the M1 MBP and it hasn’t slowed down.
@@KevinRossRN Understood, thank you very much for the quick response. The price difference is $460, do you think it's worth adding? And it's no problem if it's a refurbished MBP ?
@les6326 Well, I should have asked where you’re getting the refurbished from because I’ve personally gotten refurbished computers directly from Apple and I couldn’t tell a difference, and I tried really hard to find anything that would indicate it wasn’t “new.”

@alsoelizabethyu_ Yeah, when we were all at home it really gave me some opportunities to experiment. Which video editor are you using? Some of the built in audio effects have been really helpful to get rid of the noise.
Great stuff, man. Straightforward and extremely informative. A breath of fresh air, really. Subbed. Question: Got a base M2 model a couple of days ago.
The extra was worth it for me and I don’t think many people have said they got too much memory. It helps.
@@KevinRossRN Funnily I just got off the phone with the retailers who told me they could not swap it with a 16G. So, I guess I will have to push the 8GB as much as I can... Thanks for the reply.

Hi there! Your channel is amazing. I started my podcast because of you showing me how to set up the sound on my iPad and record. Question I am looking to expand to youtube and use my phone camera to record the podcasts and the mics/audio interface you advised in the iPad podcasting video. How can I sync my audio and video using my iPad? Thank you!
And if not, I’ll take another crack at it 😁
@@KevinRossRN Thank you so much for your quick and detailed response!! I use iMovie but for some reason it gets synced up in the beginning perfectly but then as the video plays (they are usually around 1.5 hours) the sync gets off, not by a lot but enough to definitely notice. So I was wondering if there was a different software besides iMovie you recommend for the iPad that would work? I haven’t gotten my laptop yet but if it will make my editing process easier I am definitely going to look into it. I have heard Adobe Premier Pro is perfect for syncing but unfortunately I need a laptop for that…. Also!! I am looking to upgrade my camera eventually for videoing, is there one you recommend for podcasting videos that doesn’t break the bank? Thank you SO much for all of your help. I really appreciate it.
@yelinadavis For an iPad editing experience I’d recommend either LumaFusion, Davinci Resolve for iPad, or Final Cut Pro for iPad. Davinci is free. I would stick with the iPhone camera for as long as possible until you feel like this is something you really want to do and sustain. However, once you’re ready to move up, something like the ZVE10: geni.us/AlphaZVE10 This will be a camera you can grow into and that has the option for interchangeable lenses.

@yelinadavis of course! Sending my best 🤘
Firstly Great comparison video ever. Should i go for the A6400 for mainly shooting cinematic bRolls , slomos my Major focus is only on shooting cinematic travel content?
What’s the price difference where you are between these two cameras? I just ask because I still own the 6400 and it’s still great, but having a stabilized lens is helpful for those handheld shots. You can certainly do those shots without a stabilized lens with the proper technique.
@@KevinRossRN the price difference is 200$ between a6400 and a6600. I just want to purchase a camera where i can get handheld bRolls for slomos
@sanyamshitole well, the one thing to consider is an all-in price. So, if you have the IBIS, which offers just a slight edge over the 6400, then you could have more options for non stabilized lenses that are often times cheaper. What lens (or lenses) have you considered?
@@KevinRossRN I was thinking of Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS or Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS , i was thinking of buying a6400 with an OSS lens which later on if needed i can buy an affordable gimbal . what would be better according to you buying A6400 with OSS lens and saving money for gimbal OR going for A6600 which has an IBIS ?
Yeah, the caught up as you mentioned isn't so much of the tech; I can live without fancy LED and there are CFL bulbs that can dim. My problem in getting started is Money, Space, and Time.
The time can be one of the biggest challenges for sure. Once you establish a routine, it does get a little easier, but it still takes quite a bit of juggling if you have a full time job, family, school, or anything else that might need your attention. Speaking of time, I appreciate you being here for this one. 🤘
@@KevinRossRN Thing is, I would like to make filmmaking my full time job (Get Tips for the Tip Jar, patrons, or grants (That's far out)). @zeroryoko999 What kind of filmmaking in particular are you interested in? Are there things that you’re interested in to be able to take on small projects where you can learn, but also make a small amount of money? Or are you hoping to have a KZread channel?
@@KevinRossRN As you can see, I already have a KZread channel; mostly gaming and animation, but I want to expand. However, as I mentioned, Space and Time is a problem. The films I could make on a budget for right now is stop-motion (I already have one planned and try to have all the shots done in less than a week, It would be a 15 to 20 minute short). The money would be from a tip jar thanks to viewers that see the final result. I already have a degree in Video Production so I've learned and I've kept learning even after college by watching tutorials and such like Film Riot and your videos. My biggest roadblock is my own family where I now believe they want me to get out of Indie Filmmaking and start wearing a Grochery Store Uniform. With my mental condition, I wouldn't be able to handle it.
@zeroryoko999 Oh, I didn’t see that. Since I mostly respond to comments on my phone the interface doesn’t really show much on the profile…Not like on the computer. I can understand that there are family pressures, and it can certainly stifle that creativity when you’re stressed about that dynamic. If you studied video production, what about finding a couple of creators that you could edit for to bring in a little cash just to show (your family) you’re making something of that degree? Stop motion is something I’ve never tried, but I’m certainly interested in, and very much respect the time and effort it takes.
I know you said the disclaimer at the beginning but literally pointless comparing with different ram models as you don’t get a like for like and true comparison.
Well, you may or may not be surprised, but in this video I was trying to answer a common question I was getting about a base model M2 and higher spec’d M1 because at the time these two machines (the M1 with the extra memory) was around the same price. However, I do still appreciate your feedback here. 🤘
Because Im thick as shit when it comes post production basically this adptor allow me to record SM57 going into my interface simultaneously with camera video on my iphone ? that would be wicked as i cant really afford mv88 that goes into iphone super thanks man !
Yeah, the interface can be connected to the phone and then the video you’re recording will pick up the SM57 that is connected to the interface. I have to say that these audio interfaces are some of my favorite pieces of tech because they save so much time and frustration.
