Atlas Athlete Pack | Final Review & My Thoughts!

In this video I got over Atlas Athlete Pack I have had for about three months now. I give you my final thoughts on the bag, how I use it and what it can and can't do (there is little it can't do).

    Agree with you fully on this one Tammy. Amazing pre purchase support, (have not needed any post purchase support) and this bag is worth every cent. Good things are seldom cheap - cheap things are seldom good! If you are into hiking with your camera gear this bag is awesome. I even use mine for solo over night camping!

    Hi Tammy, great video, very informative. I'm also through to a couple of photo backpacks from Kata, Lowepro, Thinktank, Mindshiftgear and others. During the last few years I mainly used the Mindshiftgear Rotation 180 backpacks (Panorama and Horizon) and I especially love the quick access via the rotating beltpack. Nothing else is as fast and convenient, neither a side access (via swinging the pack forward under your arm like on the Lowepro Fastpack) nor back access (via rotating hip belt like on the Lowepro Flipside). That said 2 limitations on the Rotations made me looking for an additional backpack: • A more flexible compound system. The belt pack on the Rotations have a fixed size and do not work well for longer lenses attached to a body. More camera gear has to be placed in the upper day pack but that defeats the point of the quick access system. • A more comfortable carrying system. The Rotations are not bad but a real hiking backpack is much more comfortable, especially when fully loaded. The Atlas Athlete sounds to fit the bill. Having to set down the backpack to access the camera seems be the major drawback of the Atlas for me. I wish it had a side access door. For that reason I definitely won't get rid of my Rotations and use the Atlas solely for larger hikes or bike tours, where I have less need to rapidly access my camera, like it is for street photography or the average city sightseeing tour. Have you used your Atlas pack in scenarios, where you need rapid camera access? What is your approach to deal with such a scenario? • Just carrying the camera in your hand once it is out of the pack probably supported with a handstrap? • Using a neckstrap or shoulderstrap? Usually ugly in combination with a backpack. • Attach the camera to the Atlas via a strap, capture clip oder spider holster? Neither works well if you need to change lenses though. Cheers Pete

    Hey there, sorry for the late comment! I don't usually carry my camera out of hte bag when walking since I walk on some very uneven and rough terrain. I have a capture clip from POeak design but I don't use it on this bag just yet. When I do use a camera strap, I use my Black Rapid strap that clips under the arm so it stays in place when I put my bag back on and it works really well. I also have the Black Rapid Camera Bag Strap but its a pain to get the bag on and off with the camera on it.

    Thank you very much! Actually I did consider the Adventure for a little bit but for the type of photography I do, the Athlete worked best for me. The Adventure is a great pack but you are right, 70L is a lot of space for me and too much for my needs. Now if I hiked the Appalachian Trail or over night hiked I would have gone with that one instead. Or if I had a regular size DSLR with a grip like I used to have. I hope that helps...

    Great review of the atlas bag. Could you tell me what the depth of the camera compartment is on the bag? The specs say 13.5cm but looking at your video the body you placed in sideways to show seemed to stick out a long way which suggests the depth is less than stated on the website.

    Hi Tammy, Am new sub and appreciate your honest and candid approach to real world use of the Atlas. Was wondering when you would do this vid since the unboxing. Am looking at the Atlas (Athlete or Adventure), Shimoda, and Peak 45l. I recently bought Sony’s A7m3 and A9 to test out which one I like better with the prime and zoom lens. Since you’ve had both the Athlete and Shimoda 40l, what would be your recommendation with my setup. I also have the Vanguard Alta Pro 2 + 264CT tripod. Appreciate any good tips from your experience. My top 3 considerations are: 1) comfort; and 2) quality; and 3) versatility for storage for gear and non-gear. There is no particular order above Keep up the good content! Cheers

  • @tammymellert98

    @tammymellert98

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you very much! Well, lets see if I can help you here with these questions. 1.) Comfort - well let me say that both the Shimoda 40L and the Atlas Athlete are comfortable. However, with the Shimoda, I needed the shoulder straps that are made for women (which will be out for sale on May 1st on the website) in order for the bag to be comfortable and fit me well. The 40L bag is a little tall for me but it works. I just couldn't get the bag to fit me properly no matter what adjustments I made to the shoulder straps on the bag. The Atlas Athlete fit me perfectly out of the box. It is very comfortable and I have no issues with the straps, waist belt or it being too large since its fitted to your torso size. In this one the Atlas wins. 2.) Quality - both bags are made really well. I have to say that after a few months use on the Shimoda (now remember I am not easy on my bags) the bottom of the bag has small tears and scratches in it. The bottom is the same material as the rest of the bag. With the Atlas, the bottom is a tough material and has held up well so far. The zippers on both bags are easy to use. Both bags are made well. 3.) Versatility - here is where they are completely different. The Shimoda is a roomy bag with a removable core unit and can be used for any purpose (the atlas can as well but you have to remove all the dividers). It has one main big compartment and then a large compartment on the front. There is a small pocket on the top of the bag but depending on what size core unit you choose that pocket gets larger or smaller. You in essence lose space if you have a larger core unit in the bag. I does have the ability to have side access, again depending on the core unit you choose, but I don't use side access. The water bladder storage on the 40L is something some people don't like since its in the bag. Once you get the core unit in the bag and your extras there isn't much room for anything else in the bag. I found it hard to fit a small sandwich container in the front and a jacket. If you need more room with Shimoda, you have to move to the 60L bag and that is way too big for me. The Atlas Athlete is nice since you have a dedicated camera storage area of 10L and then the front expands from 5L to 30L depending on your needs. The origami section of the camera compartment allows you to either reduce or enlarge that depending on what you plan to carry or how much gear you have. The Atlas also have more storage pockets on the bag so you can store things neatly, not in an accessory pouch all together, and get to things faster. The Atlas is expandable and offers a lot more carry options and storage. For me it is the more versatile bag for that reason. I plan to keep my Shimoda 40L for now but I will more than likely use my Atlas a lot more. Honestly if you plan to do any day hiking, either bag will work for you. However, if you want something you can grow into and it expands to meet your needs - I prefer the Atlas Athlete. If you want to go on longer hikes and do overnight trips then Atlas Adventure (70L) or the Shimoda 60L would work. I like having options on how I store my gear and I rework my bags a lot depending on the seasons and where I am going or shooting. The Atlas Packs give me that ability and in a nice comfortable package. Also consider cost too. I spent almost $550 on my Shimoda 40L, medium ICU, small icu (you can stack them), small accessory pouch, large accessory pouch and rain cover. I spent $385 for the Atlas Athlete and it came with all that in one bag (well technically with all the pockets and the origami unit). If you have a camera store near you that carries the Shimoda 40L I would take my gear and go try it out. Put it on and see how it feels to you. What fits and works for me might not fit or work for you. The Atlas Packs are based in AZ but you can always get in touch with them and they will help you decide what will work for your needs. They are very helpful. I hope that helps you and if you have any more questions, please let me know! Let me know which one you decide on.

    Hi Tammy, thanks for your nice and usefull review. I'm really interested in buying this Atlas backpack or the Shimoda 40 or 30L. Regarding this one, I'm afraid about the main compartment zipper, it seems to me that isn't is a waterproof zipper? Could be? It would be reaaly strange due to that zipper is really in the path of water when you are in a rain, and the rainfly just can't protect the backpanel of the backpack. Another issue with this backpack is the access to the main compartment, I would like a quick access to my gear and I would try to not keep my camera outside the backpack when I'm walking (mainly if I'm in a urban environment). Do you have some advice about this two issues? Thanks a lot!! Best Regards

  • @tammymellert98

    @tammymellert98

    Hello Guillermo! Well you have your decision cut out for you here. Both bag systems are great for photographers but they both work very differently. I just had my Atlas in the rain a couple days ago and while I used the rain cover over the front, the back got a little wet but no water got inside the camera compartment at all. I have had my Shimoda 40L get soaked as well and no water got in there either. Now as far as gear access, the Shimoda has a bit of an advantage over the Atlas in that it can be setup with the ICU units so that you have side access on the bag. With the Atlas you have one way to get in and that's through the back. If quick easy access is important, than the Shimoda is the clear one to consider here. It really is personal preference and what you need in a bag. I hope that helps you.
