I'm a 6'4, 250lb blue belt. I finally got twister'd in a live roll.. by none other than Keith Krikorian. He basically became my dad that day.

Got twistered for the first time this week. The only good thing was I could see it coming. I couldn’t escape, but I said “ oh you’re gonna twister me” as it was coming. Plenty of time to tap.

My gym trains everyone from casuals like me to ADCC entrants. I learned the twister, knee bar, and outside heel hook within 6 weeks haha. Being 43 years old and not too flexible anymore, just my partner putting my arm behind his neck in the sequence is already making me uncomfortable.

Can you paralyse someone with the can-opener? What's the worst injury you can get from that?

The twister is really unintuitive. If you're in that one weird position a very small force can completely fuck up someone's spine. I don't understand why people even use two arms. If I'm in the position and pull with one arm just a little bit, they're forced to tap.

So, you actually mean that chokes are less devastating if taken to far than any of the breaks you show? If you take a twister to far, you'll get paralyzed. If you take a choke to far (any choke) you'll die....

A blood strangle causes unconsciousness in 3 to 7 seconds and death in about a minute. Causing death in forty seconds of attempting to damage an unconscious opponent is a very low rate of damage.

@@TheDevourerOfPancake Yes, that's a given, everything is more or less safe in BJJ as long as you control it. But taken to far (wich is what they speak of here) chokes are more dangerous than any break.

i think the idea is that it's a lot easier for a lock, especially a spinal lock, to accidentally go too far compared to a strangulation. it's about the risk for accidental injury, not about effectiveness as a murder method. when a strangulation is applied, there is a 30+ second window between loss of consciousness, which the strangling party will certainly notice, and death. on the other hand a lock that is entered into explosively or cranked against resistance can cause permanent damage in a few seconds, especially if done by a stronger person against a weaker person. so it's a lot easier to take it too far by accident. of course, there's a conversation to be had about the risks of strangulation techniques that are applied incorrectly and end up not closing up the artery but cranking the spine or crushing the windpipe instead, but that's only if the technique is applied very incorrectly, whereas with a lock that kind of damage is the purpose of the technique
