    The love and tenderness between Mills and his wife is one of the most touching parts of the movie, and stands in stark contrast to the crimes of the serial killer. There is also a suggestion that Somerset still has some affection for his former lover, whom he mentions in the conversation with Tracy. It’s completely wrong to say there is no love in the movie.

We barely spoke a word on the walk back to our halls. I’ll never forget that walk home. Brilliant film that I’ve probably seen a hundred times, but haven’t watched for a few years now. The performance of the actor playing the man forced into the act (into an impossible choice!) was gut-wrenching. It conveyed the horror of what had been done to her and what he had now to live with far better than any graphic depiction. The shock of that sequence stayed with me after the film first came out - it was years before I could watch in a (slightly) more detached frame of mind, again.

    Plot twist: The Seven Deadly Sins (originally called "The Seven Deadly Vices") aren't in the Bible. There are 10 Commandments, not 17. Edit/Note: The vice of gluttony is actually more serious than mere overindulgence. In its original context, it meant a willingness to engage in personal overindulgence (in any particular thing, not just food or drink) while at the same time being callous toward the needy. In a similar sense, sloth meant more than mere laziness. It meant apathy.

    The Bible does not specifically describe a set of “seven deadly sins.” However, it does teach that practicing serious sins will prevent a person from gaining salvation. For example, the Bible refers to such serious sins as sexual immorality, idolatry, spiritism, fits of anger, and drunkenness as “the works of the flesh.” It then states: “Those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom.”

    I always had a different theory. Mills wife was killed because of envy. She wanted more: didnt like her apartment, didnt want to live in the city. She envied others who had it better than her. Then John Doe was killed because of his anger (wrath) towards the other sinners. Just an idea

  • @emptylikebox

    @emptylikebox

    Жыл бұрын

    John Doe already said that "envy is my sin". The point is, he envies all the people he killed or those people who had a sense of normalcy because it's something that he doesn't have. He hates people but at the same time he envies them for being free because he is not. Envy is a sin that people don't talk about, all the other sins are tolerated, but envy has always been frowned upon because it's the root of all evil. As I said he envies people who are free and so he pushed Mills to the point of rage so someone can kill him. Because at the very last minute he is a hypocrite, and that goes hand in hand with envy.

    Not liking your apartment, or the city you live in, are not, in themselves, envy. You can desire to improve your life without envying others. I am obese and on a diet; I want to be slimmer because my weight impacts on my health, not because I envy others for being thinner than me.

    Maybe it is something deeper here and i must admit that i got into this comment section looking for different analysis. Who is the victim of wrath? Killing individuals for their sins or offering a sacrifice for them is biblical and rooted in the old testament, blood is payment for sins. For jewish converted to Christianity or christians there is forgiveness for sins and the blood of the Lamb (Christ) pays for those crimes, no need to kill the sinner. BASED on principle of marriage, since the very beginning, man and wife are one indivisible, then Moses allows writ of divorce BUT then Christ recovers the marriage as a union that two are united in one indivisible flesh. When i put this in the picture. At the last scene, the murderer confesses envy as his sin BUT says "i believe or guess, something in between the lines" i think he is the victim killed for envy and then my last mistery victim. At this point we do not have it unless the christian or pre-Moses principle of marriage is applied. The wife and Mills are one flesh indivisible by killing her he killed Mills and right before the murderer gets killed he said there comes "wrath" referring to Mills. I think this is enough to say that detective Mills got killed by his "Wrath" and you can throw the baby in the picture to add more of Mills being killed but i do not think is necessary.

    She wasn't envy, John Doe envy'ed David Mills, the life he had with Tracy. He said as much at the end of the film..He wanted Mill's life or a similar life...He killed her out of Envy so he became Envy, and cut off her head and had it shipped to make David become Wrath to complete his 7 deadly sins murderous mission..

    "Wanting someone to listen to you, you can't just tap them on the shoulder anymore, you have to hit them with a sledgehammer, and then you'll find you have their strict attention"- JD , if I was in mills position I would have done the same , but can't help but think that no matter what I would have done I've already lost. One thing does bother me with the killing of mills wife? What happened to the dogs? I guess he probably took care of them quickly, also there is an alternate ending that suggests that somerset kills John instead of mills, food for thought.

    This is a fantastic movie, especially the cinematography. In the movie Mills and Somerset are filmed in such a way that in the beginning they are never really in framed together and as the movie progesses they move closer and closer, eventualley overlapping in some frames But, this level af detail is not surprising, David fincher is a well known perfectionist. Btw: Mr. FilmComicsExplained are you going to make a video on the movie "The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020)", if you have not watched it yet, i think you should.

    It truly is an excellent film, by it's mood, there's a real sense of dread throughout. Even though the films about the 7 deadly sins. There is no sign of the Divine being present, it's as if the Divine has abandoned humanity to damnation and were witnessing the remnants of redemption. That character being Morgan Freemans older Detective.

    All great stories have great character arcs - and character arcs are always about identity - discovering it or redefining it. Every good story is about answering the question: "who am I?" This is a perfect example of story arc AS character arc. Each pivotal event brings him closer to reconsidering his retirement; the events of the story are there to lead him to recommit to his life as a cop.
