I watched this movie *specifically* before this video. I think I massively underestimated how much of a sociopath and how success driven Lou Bloom is because of how slick talking he is and the fact he seemed to have some delayed development so at the beginning he comes across as almost naive and just wanting to succeed as he has issues reading social cues. I didn’t expect at all when he tricked his partner and let him die. But what blows my mind most was how he intricately planned everything so that the police didn’t have a leg to stand on and couldn’t prove shit hence why he ends up successful.

Jake gave one of the more realistic interpretations of a "Psychopath". His superficial, skin deep but believable knowledge due to charm, complete lack of awareness for personal space (a very subtle but brilliant detail), and his almost manic drive for things that are "means to an end" with no real direction, just chaos along the way. VERY well done performance.

I think he best is described as a “sociopath” but what you said is so right. The small little details which you can barely notice make his performance so convincing. His little twitch in his when he’s lying, and his mannerisms. So scary.

@@lucasrhys0363 He can be described as a high functioning sociopath... because unlike a general sociopath, he's not completely erratic, but with obvious burst of impulsivity for brief moments shown... but in general a calculating person. But obviously he cannot form a relationship with anyone, a psychopathic trait and he's complete lack of conscience... Thus we can say that he's a high-functioning sociopath or a low-functioning psychopath, based on if he is like this from birth or he's a product of environment... but because he's poor we can say the latter is true, so he's a sociopath, a high-functioning.

People get psychopaths and sociopaths completely mixed up. He can both. We all have the traits, it just takes a little push to form you. Ready to work for free because of how desperate he is. He was exploited because he was a thief and now hes the one exploiting homeless addict. Irony that’s a great point. I remember seeing something about the creators intention wasn’t necessarily about Lou being a sociopath, but like a statement on the psychology of capitalism, and how that kind of behavior is exactly what the system requires to succeed. So while Lou isn’t meant to be normal, his behavior is less legit sociopath and more that of someone trying to follow their ambitions and do whatever it takes to an extreme degree, portrayed through the lens of a unique, brutal business. So what you mention here about a victimization dynamic adds to this imo. If you’re willing to take advantage of others, lower classes, desperate customers, your own employees, then you are more likely succeed as a business. I’m not trying to be political, idk if this interpretation was the directors intent, but it’d make sense imo, as it all puts the ending of Lou expanding his business into perspective as movies exploring disturbed characters don’t typically give them a happy ending, but I might be reading into it too much.

This movie was shocking, I did not expect it to be so brutal and nightmarish. It definitely highlights the length a person has to go to be successful but also that this type of behavior, while abhorrent, is praised when it delivers results. Great video.

I just watched this Movie again for the second time the other night, and I loved it more the 2nd time through. I caught myself admiring the Cinematography more closely, but also in awe of how driven Jake's Character is, but I reminded myself that in the Story that he's a real P.O.S willing to step on anyone because he only cares about himself. The Music definitely throws you in a loop of "hey everything is good here, just trying to get that Bread" when it's actually more disturbing than that. Amazing film overall.

I really like this film, the story, the cast and the cinematography. It's one of the few films I don't get tired of watching, it's so real and visceral. The dynamics of blackmail and desperation between different characters and even between the characters themselves. Additionally, it's a brilliant illustration of how corporate culture sells and sells out humanity for the sake of getting and keeping a paycheck.

How he tries to blend in and act normal in society but there is always something about him that stands out as "not quite right "...
