Nightcrawler: What's It Really About?

Ойын-сауық

What is the meaning of success? And how far would you go to be successful? These are just some of the many questions I'm left with after watching Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut film- Nightcrawler. A film that packs many questions and shockingly few answers as intended by the filmmakers behind it. It’s a movie that is firmly planted in “literally me” culture with a main character who is equal parts interesting and terrifying- yet strangely observable at the same time.
For a riveting viewing experience that is sure to entertain you (and leave you heavily reflecting on your own morals)- Nightcrawler may be what you’re looking for as we follow Lou Bloom, a shady L.A loner who gets by on low-level schemes and odd-jobs. But when he discovers the dark and dangerous world of freelance crime scene photography- Lou becomes obsessed with rising to the top of the food chain as a professional stringer. Along the way, we’re taken for a ride complete with breakneck speed, back ally deals, blackmail, betrayal, manipulation (mentally AND physically), and even murder while we watch the unlikely success of a truly despicable person.
But what can we learn from this movie and the brilliant first-time filmmaker behind it? What does the character of Lou Bloom say about the news industry and what does that say about us for watching it? These are all questions I hope to unpack in today’s episode where we take a thrilling look back on Dan Gilroy’s film and try to determine once and for all- What is Nightcrawler REALLY About?

This movie sat on My shelf for 10 years & I never watched. I finally watched it last week & was totally mesmerized by it. It's scary because this is probably how things actually work. Jake deserved an Oscar.

I don't think you touched on something I always thought bout with this movie. Having him & other people be unlikeable in a profession where likability is maybe the most important part to it's success. Showing what these people think & act like behind the curtains.

I thought of Nightcrawler the other day when I watched Saltburn - they’re quite similar thematically, but this film is so much better, and it made me wonder why. I think satire needs to have something to say, and Nightcrawler lands its punches - it’s powerful stuff. There are a few good scenes in Saltburn but the characters are paper thin, and ultimately it’s vacuous. Nightcrawler has depth, with a beautifully realised, albeit grotesque, character at its heart.

This film reminds me of the Tool song "Vicarious". I mean just look at the lyrics - Eye on the TV, 'cause tragedy thrills me Whatever flavor it happens to be like "Killed by the husband" "Drowned by the ocean" "Shot by his own son" "She used the poison in his tea" "Then kissed him goodbye" That's my kind of story It's no fun 'til someone dies Don't look at me like I am a monster Frown out your one face, but with the other Stare like a junkie into the TV Stare like a zombie while the mother holds her child Watches him die Hands to the sky crying, "Why, oh why?" 'Cause I need to watch things die From a distance Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies You all need it too, don't lie Why can't we just admit it? Why can't we just admit it? We won't give pause until the blood is flowin' Neither the brave nor bold Nor brightest of stories told We won't give pause until the blood is flowin' I need to watch things die From a good safe distance Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies You all feel the same, so Why can't we just admit it? Blood like rain come down Drum on grave and ground Part vampire, part warrior Carnivore and voyeur Stare at the transmittal Sing to the death rattle La-la, la-la, la, la, la-lie La-la, la-la, la, la, la-lie La-la, la-la, la, la, la-lie La-la, la-la, la, la, la-lie Credulous at best, your desire to believe in Angels in the hearts of men Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen Shouldn't have to say it all again The universe is hostile, so impersonal Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been We all feed on tragedy It's like blood to a vampire Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies Much better you than I

I could listen to this to documentaries about this movie all day. I can’t believe this Director. This was his first film! He knocked it out of the park… But of course, with Jake Gyllenhaal, he had the perfect leading man. I find him similar to Ryan Gosling (when he’s not being “Ken” 😑) Jake is the perfect actor who can be funny… Handsome… But incredibly intense and unhinged all at once. Such an underrated actor, and such a brilliant film.

The film comes at a point in class history wherein if anyone can rise without nepotism, without pedigree, and without "saintly" benefactors then that person is a working class hero. He hasn't killed anyone (assuming he didn't when I was in the bathroom at the theater). He is as flawed and weird as the rest of us. And he wins like how we want. Grab an in and go for it.

He kills Joe (his rival). He also manipulatively kills Rick (bc he doesn’t want to share the bounty with him). But most importantly- this film shows that being a murderer isn’t the only way to be evil. He is pure evil in many other ways throughout the film.

Why does he have to do stuff like roadhouse , like I feel like Jake is a complex actor an doesn't do basically mcu movies which I got wrong cuz he literally joined mcu. It's depressing cuz I want Jake to do more movies like this , character study movies. He has so much talent being wasted on brainless movies like the mcu .

I always thought it was obviously a crap commercial for the telemarketing, tech bro's, amoral clout or monied virtue for personal protection from the angle of "Taxation isn't theft, I pay less" when stealing or profiting from the zeitgeist of "Bruh, but I forgive women and people of colour only if they fight the system becoming me more passive than passionately" There's those who are not in control and desperate to extricate themselves of their demands to allow innocent people to get by without helpful people who are just better at trying to logically or emotionally resolve social issues instead of profit from inflation of troubles...or argue that they got fucked for the money and enjoy the wholesome paying experience.
