There was nothing like seeing the silver-retention print projected in the original theatrical release. The DVD/Blu-Ray versions do not have the same impact. The achievement of Darius Khondji's cinematography has yet to be fully acknowledged.

I also heard that the movie studio wanted to change the ending, thinking it was too dark. However Brad Pitt said he would only sign on if they kept the original ending. Glad they did.

From Wikipedia "The ending of the screenplay, with the head in the box, was originally part of an earlier draft that New Line had rejected, instead opting for an ending that involved more traditional elements of a detective thriller film with more action-oriented elements. But when New Line sent David Fincher the screenplay to review for his interest in the project, they accidentally sent him the original screenplay with the head-in-the-box ending. . . When New Line realized that they had sent Fincher the wrong draft, the President of Production, Michael De Luca, met with Fincher and noted that there was internal pressure to retain the revised version; De Luca stated that if Fincher promised to direct the movie, they would be able to stay with the head-in-a-box ending. Despite this, producer Kopelson refused to allow the film to include the head-in-a-box scene. Actor Pitt joined Fincher in arguing for keeping this original scene, noting that his previous film Legends of the Fall had its emotional ending cut after negative feedback from test audiences, and refusing to do Seven unless the head-in-the-box scene remained." Imagine all the films test audiences have ruined in the past...

I can't believe it's been 21 years. I've only seen it twice - once when I first watched it in the theaters; I went randomly because I was bored one afternoon. it was a month or so after the first release, and had migrated to the "dollar theaters". I was so blown away that I grabbed a friend who was also a movie buff and fellow theater geek, and made him watch it. A year or two later, he got me the "special edition" DVD of the film as a birthday present... which I don't think I even took the shrink wrap off of for several more years, until I loaned it to someone else to watch. It's one of those movies where I tell people, "Watch it once, and just admire how well done it is. But it's such a horrible story you'll never want to watch it again - and that's OK."

Every Frame a Painting is great so much better than say Frame by Frame on the Film Theorists; I'm sorry but the attitude that guy puts on is terrible. I watch them sometimes if the topic seems interesting and every time I think this would be better is CineFix had a Film School'd or Art of the Scene about this. Every Frame a Painting is so different I don't bother comparing it to what CineFix used to do; much more professorial, while CineFix went more fun. Either way both are/were excellent and educational.

The first time I saw Spacey was in The Ref. When he beat the shit out of the Xmas tree yelling, "The Corpse wants to speak," (or something like that), I knew he was going to be fabulous. That scene is one of the most memorable parts of the flick.

I’ve never quite accepted the ending. Each victim was guilty of one of the sins and dies as a result, but it seemed to me a more consistent ending would have been having Kevin Spacey convince Brad Pitt that he had murdered his wife causing Brad to kill him for his envy but have Morgan Freeman try to stop him by threatening to shoot him...have Pitt turn to shoot Freeman in the midst of his wrath and get shot dead by Freeman...who then walks over kicks over the box and a bloody mannequin head rolls out. Thereby completing the serial killer plan of seven deaths for seven sins.

It's very common for films to use doubles any time an actor's face is not clearly visible, so basically any time a character is seen from a distance, is facing away from the camera, or is only seen from the neck down.

While many of the wide shots in the finale do feature doubles, that's Spacey you're pointing the arrow at. You can tell because it actually looks like Spacey. His double looked more like John Malkovich or Tom Noonan, and particularly on the blu-ray, is highly noticeable in all but the widest shots.
