The beauty of it was how John Doe, covered in blood, walks into the cavernous lobby & noone notices him. He keeps his usual soft tones twice before he goes full-on air raid siren. I also point out that was for effect. Doe MEANT to be yelling. The only time when he appears to lose it for real is in the car & Pitt's character "dared" to call Doe's victims "innocent". No he didn't yell, but he grew more & more intense as he accuses them of "Sinning" & needed to be "punished" for them.

I heard a different interpretation, where Doe didn't realize it was Mills until Somerset yelled out "Mills" while Doe had the gun to Mills' head. That's why he pulled the gun away, otherwise he was going to kill him. He was currently developing the photo of Mills and Somerset, but couldn't get back to his apartment before the detectives arrived, so he still hadn't seen his own photo yet to study what they looked like; they chased him back down the stairs right after the bright flash of his camera went off. Not sure if I agree with this all, just another way to look at it.

The doctor says “he would die of shock if you were to shine a flashlight in his eyes.” Amazing. And 2, the lust scene. He doesn’t go into it much but it’s so real, so haunting. The details are so gruesome and terrifying. Definitely the best movie I’ve seen.

One of the great things about the Lust scene is that they manage to convey the brutality of the murder without showing much of it at all. All they show is a photo of the murder weapon. I’m no cinematic scholar, but the fact that it was dark, wet, and dreary, during the vast majority of the movie says that the city and the shit going on within it is a shitty, filthy cesspool. The sun shine’s brightly in the final scene, which, to me, seems to represent that this darkness and dreariness is all about to be gone once Doe is blasted. In fact, it’s 7:01 during the box scene, another indicator that the 7 deadly sin murders are about to come to a close. There’s also a clear dichotomy going on between Mills and Somerset. Somerset, the pessimist, is trying to ascend his way out of hell or purgatory (the city and crime), while Mills, the naive optimist, unwittingly wants to descend into it (he specifically transferred into the city). Mills has a positive view on life and his work, yet he ends up being the one who succumbs to the final deadly sin of wrath, which completes Doe’s masterpiece. A cruel irony.

You didn't point out one of my favorite mistakes in this movie. The scene where Mills and Somerset are driving down the road, talking about something-or-other. It is POURING rain on Mills' side of the windshield, wipers trying in vain to keep up with the downfall. Camera changes to Somerset for his next line and his windshield is ALMOST spotless.

This is not only the greatest horror movie ever, but also one of the greatest movie's ever! It doesn't rely on anything that makes the killer seem supernatural, there is almost no violence, it's just the sheer thought of such a gruesome killer & the nerve shredding atmosphere. The great foreboding and never knowing what's going to be next! I love the scene where Somerset & Mills are conducting separate interviews & you can tell something truly horrific has happened that has appalled both of them but the reveal of a single photo or a brutal torture device. Nothing else is needed! The mind can comprehend of how anyone could conceive of using such an apparatus on a poor victim. A situation where you don't want to die but the alternative would be, for most compassionate people, beyond consideration. The cast is perfect too! And I'll always wonder what Mills is going to tell Somerset whilst shaving his chest before the ride along with 'Jon Doe'. Credit has to go to Kevin Spacey too. For an actor who is normally genial & charming to make you feel revulsion is incredible.

Given you took a sin off for the opening credits because they were revolutionary at the time, you should have also removed a sin for the surprise "Kevin Spacey is the killer" when he showed up in the lobby. It was a complete surprise at the time; he wasn't in any marketing stuff, his name wasn't released as being part of the cast, he wasn't seen earlier in the movie. I can't think of any other movie where the main bad guy has a checklist like that to his name. Usually they have second billing on all of the posters. But that would mean the total tally wasn't 77 sins anymore.

John Doe changed parts of his plan around Mills- Everything in the first half of this movie implied he wasn't planning to be caught until he realized his envy of Mills' life, and came up with a two birds, one stone alternate ending to his plan, which also explains why his crimes seemed so much more improvised after the lust victim. Cinema Sins gets a sin for not realizing this, despite that it was exposited.

I think John Doe's character always planned to murder the wife or child of one the police officers investigating him. It just so happens that Brad Pitt's character was a hothead, but it's not hard to imagine that pretty much any cop would react the same way if they saw the head of one of their loved ones in a box, Especially the way John Doe had been taunting them. That's a very real very human response to such a traumatic experience. That's why John Doe was following them so closely. He would have done the same thing regardless of which detectives were investigating the case.

I agree and I also think that he decided on making the envy victim himself as his endgame, he also knew he just might have to change his plan midstream which would be no problem, he had the gluttony, sloth, greed victims chosen, in a major city I doubt you have to look very hard to find lust and pride so when the police were on to him earlier then expected he could alter his plan and victim selection without to much trouble. My theory on how he crossed paths with the fat guy is before that guy could no longer fit through the door he went places, most likely public transportation and perhaps the fat guy is who John Doe was referring to in his diary when he was saying that a normal conversation made him vomit and laugh.

He never ever planning on making himself as this Envy of 7 deadly sins since he believes he deliver god's punishment. The changes of his games is pure because he got found, in the chase scene where Doe pointed a gun to Mills head he think there for a second what he needs to do to this cop and he investigate his life only to found himself Envy of this young detective life, his beautiful simple life since all his life John Doe spend his time for shit that he belief and looking only for the sinning people birth this dark imaginary image of the rest of them and in his eyes people are bad, John Doe envy of Detective Mills life and his pretty wife.

Think about that the next time you watch the movie, there's a ton of stuff concealing one of his hands in various scenes.

[two TVs] And _stylistically,_ from a filmmaking perspective, that's valid. But it's also exactly its sin, because it makes no sense from a real-life perspective. It's forced, an example of style overriding realism. Cinematic... Hubris, I guess?

Tracy and John Doe being the last to die sort of makes sense, actually. The first five sins, are self-gratifying or self-inflicted, something you victimize yourself with/do to yourself. The last two, envy and wrath, are sins that make _others_ the victims. Thus, the first five were both the embodiments and victims of their own sins. John Doe was the embodiment of envy, but Tracy was the victim of it, while Mills was the embodiment of wrath, but John Doe was the victim of _that_ sin.

I'd like to think a good way of John Doe representing Envy would be if he wasn't envious of the detective in particular, but rather the masses that he looks down on as a whole, the ones who tolerate the sins of daily life. This way, he would *want* to be ignorant, he would wish that his circumstances could just differ in the slightest so that he wouldn't be plagued with the contempt that drove him to murder. He wants to be like everyone else, no matter how much he is disgusted by them.

still my favorite movie of all time, the amount of fun facts and Easter eggs in the movie is mind blowing. a fun fact that ive always loved was that kevin spacey purposely stayed off the credits until the end even going so far as to excuse himself from press junkets at they were promoting the movie so that the reveal of john doe would be that much more impactful. its also the reason why he is first billing in the after the movie credits.

That's definitely one of the best facts. Spacy demanded that he not be in them so that his name not spoil who Doe was. Dedication to your art. Another one of my favorites is that the journals in Doe's apartment are all full of crazy. The film had some guy write bat-shit insanity, cover to cover, in each and every one of those.

A few things: 1) I’m pretty sure the “wood shavings” in the Gluttony scene were pieces of linoleum. 2) The part where John Doe hits Brad Pitt but leaves him was added in because Pitt had hurt himself on set and Fincher decided to add it into the script. - Also (granted it’s been several years since I’ve seen the movie), I could swear Kevin Spacey said he wasn’t trying to kill them when he shows up at the precinct. Something along the lines of, “If I wanted you dead, I would have already.” 3) If Spacey/Doe had been planning the Sloth murder a year in advance, it’s possible he’d been planning the Gluttony murder as long, and had met the guy before he became a shut in and even contributed to that. Maybe I’m just grasping at straws.... Just saying.
