Rickson had more athleticism and explosiveness than Royce. Rickson would’ve been “top gaming” a lot more, and he had some legit ground and pound. Royces “bottom game” probably got so good from a lifetime of rickson manhandling him.

In Art Davies book “Is this legal” he said that Rorion picked Royce to fight UFC 1 because Rickson was not giving the money he earned from teaching private’s to Rorion and putting it towards the Torrance academy. He also mentions something about Rickson using the money to get his wife a massage or something like that. A very similar story that Royce was chosen basically as a punishment towards Rickson. It could have blown up in Rorions face, but it didn’t. I’ve been training BJJ since I saw Royce win in UFC 2. I was impressed with what I saw and decided I wanted to learn that.

With physical appearance being the basis with the greatest prejudice in the minds of North Americans for presuming fight dominance between two opponents, Rickson looked more powerful, more athletic and just appeared to be the scrapy type compared to Royce. Whether or not it played a roll or influenced the choice of Royce to represent in the UFC over Rickson, the impact it made toward popularizing BJJ was monumental. I will always consider Royce to have been the one to open the eyes to the effectiveness and size mitigating value of BJJ.

@@BadgerBJJ The fight happened in 2000 not 2002. Rickson was also undefeated and still competing in his 40's. His last fight was in May 26, 2000 at the age of 42. Sakuraba beat Royce on May 1, 2000. Rickson still took 1 more fight in the same month against Funaki who was 31 and at that point, beat up and past his prime. Funaki went on to lose 3 fights in a row including one to Sakuraba after Rickson. During that same year, Sakuraba went on to defeat other Gracies and Rickson did nothing about it. He didn't have another professional fight from May 2000 onward. Sakuraba beat Royce under Gracie Rules. Rickson tried to have the rules changed prior to the fight against Funaki as well. In the end, headbutts and elbows here banned. They will always have their place in MMA but this is a pattern that can be seen anywhere the Gracies are present.

I have no doubt that prime Rickson could take prime Aleksander Karelin, should both not cross train any more than they already did. Of course, it's be under BJJ rules. Karelin would start strong but w/no GNP training and no sub defense, he'd walk into a submission. Like how inexperienced Brock Lesnar gave his leg to Frank Mir. Idk too much about Karelin (only the famous stuff.) He competed at 6'3", 285 lbs. His signature move is "The Karelin Lift." The Karelin Lift is basically a dead lift (opponent is belly down, limp - dead weight, to avoid being pinned.) Rickson could care less how many times Karelin brute forces him up and down. Idc how strong Karelin is - there is no perfect athlete and Karelin would gas trying to chain nonstop sprinting moves on an opponent who gives no shits about the clock. Even Fedor, who respects Karelin a great deal (as all Russians do) said it would be unfair to compare Fedor vs Karelin, due to the rules differences between Greco-Roman and MMA.

McCarthy is wrong about Rickson's physical attributes. Nobody worked harder in the family at strength, stamina as well as technique. Sure he was only ten pounds heavier but it was 10 pounds of muscle that doesn't get tired, like ever. It's one attribute Rigan Machado talked about, Rickson gets stronger as the fight goes on. Rickson also did wicked neck exercises using a strong rubber band wrapped around his head secured to a wall or door. That's why he could take a punch. The neck absorbs the shock. Funaki broke his orbital bone in his face in the opening exchange and it didn't even slow him down. His front knee kicks were very strong too. Damaging. Not just for diversion.

Yes indeed but Rickson's youngest son Rockson passed away in 2001 at the age of 18, He details it in this interview on why he didn't fight Marco Ruas, Mark Coleman and Sakuraba: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mI51lJqFprTfdco.html

I remember when the son died, but it's funny how it took him a decade plus to grieve, so the fight never happened.....

@Jeff Holland It wasn't meant to scare you. I'm just saying you can tell that to Rickson instead of being the "internet tough guy" yourself.

Rickson depends on hype. He won some fights but hyped his records without any proof of anything. Training matches don't count. Royce did good till others realized you had to grapple. Then we saw how his skill matched up against MMA fighters. So they created super fights. Then it showed how he wasn't going to win any longer. So he left. Just like in Pride and Sakuraba. One Gracie after another vs someone who understood Grappling. Watch the video's. Gracie wouldn't even fight at one point till the gracies got their way. And Royce still lost.

Gracie, Gracie. The Gracie hunter beat most of them Sukariba. He even called out Rickson. Rickson denied the fight after Sukariba destroyed Royce

much respect for big john but the way you break up fighters, the head butt tackle..which is now practiced by refs who have followed your example..has got to go...no reason to hurt fighters to stop the fight.

@@whaddyathink949 pls get out the you tube video.. UFC 11 the "Proving Ground", the fighter's name is Brian Johnston, busted his nose, also when big john dives in and tackles fighters he can blow out their knee as he blind sides them. My point is this tackle technique has now been adopted by too many refs and should be prohibited.

If Royce Gracie is not allowed to wear a Gi in the octagon Shamrock would have killed him.
