I loved my time in Security Forces. With that said though, I was quite envious of other career fields when I would come back from 5 days in the field and realize that others had Monday through Friday schedules and were off on holidays. The long hours were probably my least favorite part to the job. I wouldn't trade the experiences though. We played with a lot of fun equipment and weapons.

Well said! The entry threshold is lower because SF is a “manpower” intensive AFS. We have one of the largest if not the largest manned career fields for obvious reasons, protecting the base, law enforcement duties, guarding multi-million dollar resources, personal protection of high ranking VIPs, protecting nuclear assets, etc. Takes a lot of trained people to do that well. -MSgt Retired

I'm security forces. Been in 5 years so far. We are considered "light infantry" because we don't do outside the wire missions like Marines and Army, but we as security forces are responsible for securing and protecting entire air bases therefore we need not only law enforcement and security training but also some infantry training for various deployed situations. Then there are dagres and ravens which are the "outside the wire" guys of security forces. They're responsible for securing aircraft outside of an air base. Security forces has 3 shifts. Days (morning shift) swings (half day half night) and mids (night shift) we work anywhere from 8hours to 15 hours. Hours always vary. Security forces is a lot of law enforcement and security work, and paperwork. There are desk jobs in security forces but most of those belong to techs and above. There are many sections within security forces. There's CATM which is weapon training. There is k9 which is k9 handling. Then there is dagre and raven which as mentioned above is the "aircraft security." If you're interested in being a cop I would go with general security forces. If you're interested in weapons I would go for CATM. If you're interested in dogs then I would go for k9. And if you're interested in working out all the time. Getting deployed alot. Getting to do a lot of really cool hands on intense training to kill some bad guys if they try and mess with your planes then I would go for either dagre or raven. Security forces works more and works harder than any other career in the air force. So if you're looking for a safe cozy air conditioned 9-5 desk job and you want four day weekends and 2 hour lunch breaks like this guy then don't do security forces. But if you're willing to grind and to be hot and cold and wet and miserable and tired and bored and working while all the desk job people are on holiday breaks and 4 day weekends. And if you're willing to get yelled at all the time for the tiniest of things and be really stressed out and depressed and have extremely shitty work schedules and to have to take a bite of lunch whenever you can between cars at the gate, or cramped up in a patrol car then go security forces.

@@jmatx2673 then security forces might be a good fit. Military police and civilian police are two different worlds. Some people love security forces. Some people hate it. That's for you to figure out. I would also recommend looking into highway patrol in the civilian world. They make way more money than security forces and their job is more straight forward. Security forces has a lot going on. It can be overwhelming to learn your job sometimes.

My enlistment was 6 years. The first 3 years were Dyess AFB, SAC Alert Bomber Security. I was on one of the first EST's, now called SRT. I got to attend FBI SWAT School. Our base was a SAC (Strategic Air Command) base, but we also had a MAC (Military Airlift Command) Unit with 3 Squadrons of C 130's. I was assigned to our Air Base Ground Defense Flight as Loadmaster and had 37 Assault landings during our training fighting US Army Calvery Scouts at Ft. Hood. My second duty station was in Turkey at Turkish Air Base doing Nuclear Security. I was the NCOIC of Arms and Equipment and leader of a QRF that was comprised of Airmen and Turkish Special Forces. My last 2 years were at Langley AFB Tactical Air Command Headquarters as Flight Chief of the Tactical Air Command, Command Guard (Security for the Commander and Asst. I was a Security Policeman that served a one year tour in Vietnam (68-69). The Air Force also had specially trained squadrons of Combat Security Police that served during the Vietnam war. These squadrons were considered "light infantry" as they received in-depth training with mortars, recoilless rifles heavy machine guns, etc PRIOR to their deployment into the war zone. They received the training that ALL SPs should have received prior to deployment. The regular SPs were for the most part NOT well trained at all, but became proficient at base defense through word of mouth training from the SPs that had been in-country for a longer time. The NCOs were generally not well prepared for entering a war zone since the Air Force Security Police leadership was more concerned with spit shined boots and starched fatigues. A lot of that nonsense dropped by the wayside at the smaller bases (like I was at, Binh Thuy) but was still stressed by the AF leadership at the larger bases. A lot of changes have for the good have taken place since then. The SF troops get much better training in the SF Academy and updated training when they reach their assigned duty station. The AF leadership and NCOs are of much higher quality now. The "deadwood" and drunks were weeded out long ago.

I made those mistakes. Was a crew chief. Yup, 12 hr shifts, 7 days a week. No lunch. Eat leftovers from the flight crew, get exposed to radiation. Then thought...Ill go SF. I do that. Get tasked to do intel for a federal agency. No ribbons, to ops I can talk about. Did that for 7 years until the cancer got to me. Yeah, SF when on patrol or flight line duties (ISRT, ESRT) again, 12 hrs, not counting arming up, disarming, briefings. But the intel stuff was unique, and cool. But it stuck me at E4. Dont expect recognition as SF. Most the AF will hate you. I know what its like though on the other side. Last year or so of my first enlistment, I volunteered for Support. Working with Supply is when I got inducted into the mafia. We got stuff done. Took that to SF, and found all kinds of solutions to problems we had. But, never get that pat on the back. So expect morale to suck. Though, you ALWAYS treat MPF nice. They control your pay lol

Spent 6 years as an SP (80s) and I had some cool experiences that led to a 27 year civilian LEO career. That said, most of my time as an SP was painfully boring standing a post at a gate or entry control point. As I made rank, vehicle patrols were better but still mostly uneventful. One thing that was epidemic in the SP's was being one of the only regularly armed career fields in the air force with an assigned combat role (ABGD) all too many of them thought themselves some sort of special forces just because they wore a beret. It was, and still is, cringey. Nah bro, standing gates with 6 weeks of ID check training does not make you an operator. I can say that because I was there.

@@totallyspiesrock89 Get a degree in something else. Public safety administration or something else. IMO criminal justice is a useless field if you're going to be a cop. It's not required, unrealistic, and you'll surpass that knowledge pretty quickly. Good on you to get a degree at all, and that itself will be helpful in getting hired. But the major of criminal justice itself is a waste of time, unless you're doing it purely for enjoyment. Public safety administration is the field most cops get their BA and MA degrees in, in order to promote because the focus is on organizational leadership. Good luck, both the military and LEO are great career paths.

I do think it’s BS we have 12hr shifts and still get paid the same as Services for example when all they do is either sit in the Fitness Center all day on their phones or work the DFAC. My top 3 career choices were SF, Intel, and ISR. This career field is definitely for those that actually want it otherwise you’re probably gonna be miserable.

I got K9 right after tech school and served for four years thinking this would help me become a cop upon discharge. I was wrong. The word "police" is not in the title, like in military police. It's security, as in security guard. We guarded parked aircraft, missiles which never move, and ammo bunkers. We checked the same ID cards at gates for years. The job is painfully boring and had nothing to transfer to my city PD. I walked the perimeter fence at night in arctic-cold weather with a dog. It's where they dump people who flunk other tech schools. I never seen an arrest made. With all respect to those serving, don't take this crap job. You're a school crossing guard instead of a cop.

When I went in, I was guaranteed physical therapy school, but, an emergency leave in BMT ruined that. I had an option of getting out, or staying in and going to Security Police with a guarantee of Security Specialist, now I believe they are called ABG or some such. I didn't even ask details about that AFSC, I just signed. I loved every bit of it, suited me just fine. I got to meet some really nice people, inside and outside of the military all over the world. Yes its physical, but physical can be good. Most of it is outside in every weather. More r less, the assignment is basically the same, but Security Forces now, are better trained, better equipped and much more capable. Sunhawk, you're a youngster - I did it almost 60 years ago. LOL Got out of high school early, joined the Air Force in 1960 requesting assignment to the Strategic Air Command. Went to Air Police school. Was selected for special, classified training that occurred at my first duty assignment - 12 month tour at Sidi Slimane AB in Morocco, an Arab country on the edge of the Sahara desert. Several years earlier, Uncle Sam had deployed 'special devices', otherwise known as nuclear and atomic bombs, at three USAF bases in Morocco. The Combat Defense Force was created to (i) provide security for the devices and the aircraft that carried them, and (ii) go after the bad guys if they stole any of those devices. The CDF was disbanded in 1963 when those devices were returned to friendlier soils and the air bases where they had been deployed (three in Morocco) were shut down. At that time, I understand the term "Combat Defense Squadron" was adopted for use by flight line and MMS security personnel, to distinguish them from security personnel who provided law enforcement duties on AF bases. The classified part of my gig had to do with going after the bad guys if they stole any of the devices. This training was conducted in very small teams that were drawn from the Combat Defense Force, and, since we were on the edge of the Sahara desert, our training included some 'instruction' by the French Foreign Legion, who had been deployed on the Sahara for 120 years at that time. We were what is presently known as a 'ghost' outfit. Not even other members of the CDF knew who we were; no clue why that was policy then. Brief note about the desert training by the FL. When we arrived at the training site, some 4 or 5 hours straight out into the desert, right off the bat we were told to watch out for the desert scorpions; five types are indigenous to the Sahara, one of which was deadly enough to have killed some people, and one hurt so bad you wish you were dead. (The training site was three desert tents, which accompanied about 20 Legionnaires) We were warned about the scorpions ONE time. It was the practice of the Legionnaires, within 24 hours of training starting, to put a scorpion (not the deadly variety) in the kit of everyone they trained. Two of the guys I trained with were bitten. That's when the Legionnaires explained that, as far as them training us, they would tell us what to do ONE time, and ONE time only. Did we pay close attention? You bet your ass! Those "advanced" bases were shut down in 1963 and, to the best of my knowledge, the US hasn't deployed any 'special devices' in an Arab country since. If anyone knows better, I'd appreciate being informed.

I did it in your time too. They had two career fields 811X0 Security Specialist and 811X2 Law Enforcement (with K-9 as an optional track.) ABGD - Air Base Ground Defense, was tasked to both of them together as a collateral war time duty. They then combined everything into Security Forces in the 90s but I've heard they are thinking of separating them again with the second career field being all ABGD this time.
