The Truth About Elvis Presley's Friendship With Johnny Cash

Ойын-сауық

Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash were two absolute titans of popular music. Icons that straddled the lines between rock, country, and gospel, both Presley and Cash left behind massive legacies, and both got their start at the same place: 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, the home of Sun Records. Both future superstars were signed to the label in 1954, and they spent the rest of the decade in each other's orbit. But what was their relationship really like? How much did they really influence each other? And did they stay in touch over the years? Here's the truth about Elvis Presley's friendship with Johnny Cash.

There's a rare newspaper interview done with Johnny in the 1980s I recently came across. Johnny talks of how it wasn't always an easy road for Elvis. People forget Elvis delt with a lot of hate & ridicule. It's one of the reasons Johnny always felt for, and respected Elvis. Johnny explained in interview about one time he was standing with Elvis back in the early days at a Music venue, where some big-time older Country Music Legends (people that both Johnny & Elvis grew up admiring) were there. One of them walked up to Johnny & Elvis and railed on Elvis for his embrace of, and "singing that damn n-word music". Then the country Legend (someone they had both admired up until that point) walked off coldly. Johnny said he looked at Elvis and there was a silent tear rolling down his face and off his chin. Elvis started walking for the door to leave, Johnny said he walked w/him asking if he was okay. Elvis said - "I'm never coming back to be around these people again", then left heartbroken by the experience. Elvis simply couldn't understand the racism, hate and ignorance that came for the mouths of people he had previously admired. It actually was a profound antidote from Johnny, and extremely interesting, very telling antidote, about music history of that era. Little Richard also gave an interview in 1980s talking about this. He talked of how Elvis dealt with a lot of racism from white folks hating on him at that time. Charles Connor (Little Richard's drummer.... Chuck Conner also was drummer for James Brown Sam Cooke and other Legends) he verified what Little Richard said in his own interview, about the time they were in Texas and the police were giving Little Richard and his band a hard time, and police told them all - "Tell your n-word-lovin'-friend Elvis Presley if he comes to this town we're going to be looking for any reason to throw him in jail too for doing this music". It really was no joke back then. Was not all the 'fun & good time rock n roll' that some music-historianians sometimes make it out to be. Some of these artists had a hard walk back then. Anyway, Rest In Peace to them all. 🙏

I've had a few friends tell me they're seeing it shared on multiple different social media platforms. It's a beautiful thing. I didn't list my sources in original post because didn't have them in front of me at the time ...but it's thanks to writer - John Kordosh For his 1988 interview with Johnny Cash, for the info. and also from Drummer, Charles Connor, - 3 separate interviews - One from Goldmine Magazine, N.I.H.F (National Inventores Hall of Fame), and also 3rd is a video on KZread where Mr. Conners talks about this. I'm always thankful for first-hand account interviews from the artists from any era that lived it themselves. Never realized the great Johnny Cash felt that way about Elvis, to me, that just put a stamped approval of how great an entertainer Elvis was. Even though I felt that way all along, he just looked so damn cool up there singing with his guitar, I'm talking pre Las Vegas performances now. To this day, no one can compare, I do think it had a lot to do with his looks, but damn when he started singing and doing a little shaking he looked for sure like the ultimate rock n' roll singer who ever lived.

Actually, Elvis had a crush on June Carter's younger sister. Perhaps June..Elvis loved every woman in his view. He adored women. June Carter had several letters from Elvis. She thought they were worth a lot of money, but Johnny made her throw them into a nearby river. There is no telling how many women Elvis loved being near or shared intimacy..Every woman wanted him. He said he had only loved deeply twice, one of them was June Juanico. I do not know the other. It was while he was young before stardom. He did not say but it was not his wife Priscilla. This taken from costar Susanna Leigh's book gives you an idea how much women loved him. She said if you did nothing else in life and when you die, if all you did was kiss Elvis, then that would be enough. She said they could not stop kissing each other during a movie scene.
