He's never been a fan of doing interviews on talk shows (which even Conan briefly mentions) and since the I'm Still Here film he's been deliberately messing with interviewers. But I personally don't mind how weird he is now, it makes the interviews unpredictable.

@@kenz2756 I think that's why it would work well with Conan, because he's able to roll with pretty much anything so if Joaquin tried to mess with him, it would just turn into something comedic. Conan knows how to improvise and bring out the best in a lot of his more introverted guests.

Joaquin doesn't like doing interviews that much and only does them when he has a film to promote. That is why his awkwardness comes off as weird or strange to some people. He cares more about the craft of acting and doing good work than just being famous and the need to be seen all the time.

For some reason he seems alot more relaxed and comfortable with conan. Not like some of his other interviews. Its nice to see

Listen to a Johnny Cash live album - St. Quentin is my favourite - and listen carefully when he says (as he always did) "Hello - my name's Johnny Cash". Then listen to Phoenix attempt that in the film - not even vaguely close. I can only assume that the people who were so impressed by Mr Phoenix in this film had no idea what Mr Cash sounded like, both singing & speaking. Such a waste....

@@ohwellwhateverr I think both applies to Joaquin Phoenix. He seems rather immature to me, and his behaviour is never challenged, just indulged. But maybe that lends itself to making a pretty great actor. Maybe he just has psychological disabilities.

Conan is a step above other late night hosts and this is a great example of why. Instead of being negative or dismissive of Joaquin’s eccentricity (the language thing), he embraces it wholeheartedly and encourages Phoenix, making him feel more at home.

I think it's the intensity of his acting plus how his eyes+eyebrows look. Well it might have also been the fact that I was about 12 years old when I saw that very sadistic, but also weirdly attractive character and it might have left a mark :D

Instant classic, and his, along with Reese Witherspoon, ended up creating a wonderful album themselves doing their versions of Johnny and June's tunes. I watched this movie the other day and realized that Joaquin lost his brother, as did Johnny, and I think that was a big reason they were so similar. This movie is amazing, Joaquin is amazing, and Johnny was an absolute legend. Rest in peace

No disrespect to June as she was a truly talented individual, but Reese’s singing sounds fantastic in the recordings for this movie. I got the soundtrack and I was truly impressed by Reese. Joaquin sounds really solid as well, but Johnny could sing his ass off, whereas June was more of an all around entertainer if my memory serves.

I didn’t even realize they’d done any interviews together. I’ve never seen Joaquin so talkative and relaxed. Almost every single interview he’s done has been kind of awkward because of his social anxieties, etc. He’s admitted he hates talking about himself/his job. Conan did a wonderful job putting him at ease!

CONAN did a super-fantastic job here in that he is the Only person I have ever seen interview Jaquin Phoenix & was able to bring out his funny, conversational personality.

I’m so glad Joaquin finally got an Oscar [deservedly so] for The Joker & that Reese got one for this role, but I will never understand how he didn’t get one specifically for his amazing performance as Cash. Every time I see the film, I can’t stop thinking about how much he deserved it... I’m sure he was wondering what was there I did wrong to not get it after all the prep, depths he went to, etc to so accurately portray the good & bad in Johnny’s life. That’s why I can’t comprehend how he lost-there wasn’t anything wrong (except for some inaccuracies in the script, but that has nothing to do with him & obviously didn’t get in the way of Reese winning for playing June plus as a film student myself I can understand why they made some of those changes for cinematic reasons). I mean, Reese played June fantastically too but Joaquin’s portrayal of Johnny was just so on Mark & deep... not to mention all his own personal connections to the character that must have been a very hard emotional journey for himself as he played Johnny. He literally put his whole entire self into playing JR (& the Joker too of course which just highlights his talent & emotional sacrifices as an actor since we all know how tasking that character is to play psychologically especially from Heath Ledger, yet another deserving Oscar and that’s an understatement), but for all of that he so deserved winning that one.

Yeah there are older, more famous actors who never won, and maybe got an honorary Oscar, but it's a vote, and in acting I think just copying the character ain't enough....like a pink floyd cover band, any decent musician really can play the same musical notes, it's just copying. And a good question is...y did Reece win? Was she a better June than the other guy playing Cash, no.

Loved Joaquin since Gladiator. Found Commodous attractive in a rather weird, twisted way. And he loves animals, so he’s a top bloke in my book.

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash on the radio and the LPs and 45s we had. When I watched this movie I was absolutely blown away by how uncannily close Joaquin's version of Cash was to the Man in Black himself, especially the singing and facial expressions when he sang. Same for Reece's acting as June. Have watched the movie several times and each time is as good as the first. This guy is one hell of an actor and unlike many of them at his level, humble as could be and hates talking about himself. Conan respected that by introducing the clip, that's a class act for a host.

Aired in '05 when most of the country still had CRT TVs with 4:3 aspect ratios, but the HD conversion had begun so we're blessed w/ crisp HD video to enjoy here on youtube in 2020 :D

I have watched Walk the Line a dozen times and I’m looking forward to the next. Joaquin is thrilling. And, before I saw it the first time and heard Reese was playing June Carter Cash, I thought, really? She’s such a petite little thing; can she pull off a robust woman like June? She didn’t just pull it off; she made a believer out of me. And the guy who played Jerry Lee Lewis; wow! What a cast. What a director. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Im literally binge watching Joaquin's interview and this got recommended to me, what a nice day❤️

He should have won the oscar for best actor.. I think he did a fantastic job of playing Johnny Cash..

I love joaquin so much he is such an incredible actor very charismatic and strong

Joaquin was robbed an Oscar for this movie, much in the same way Val kilmer was robbed for his incredible performance as Doc Holliday in Tombstone.

"He was a fan of this movie I did called Gladiator".....he's talking about it like it was some small movie that no one saw and wasn't one of the biggest blockbusters of the 2000s and won 5 oscars including Best Picture lol. Cool to see a humble actor out there. I don't completely agree with Joaquin on everything politically, but I've always admired him for being very humble and he's always seemed like a great guy. I'd watch any movie he's in.

I thought the same thing lol. One of the best movies of all time(and my favorite movie), one of the best acting performances of all time(by he himself), and he is like "yeah I did a movie a few years back, called Gladiator" lol

It is awesome to see Phoenix in this interview. And yes, that movie was incredible.

They all "rocked their rolls" in Walk the Line. Absolutely phenomenal!!!

That's the greatest actor alive right now! When that man is laid to rest, the world will say this. His acting abilities in Parenthood when he was a kid, shows how he was far above the adult actors.

Joaquin Phoenix has superb acting skills. He doesn't need an Oscar, Oscar needs Joaquin.

When I was 12, the first concert I ever went to was a Johnny Cash concert because my dad loved his music so much. Watching "Walk The Line", was really like being at that concert again. Amazing performance by Joaquin Phoenix.

Only the legends knew Joaquin from Walk the line movie. I'm sure that Mr Cash would be glad that he did the role. RIP Johnny Cash.

Walk the Line is and always will be my favourite film of all time.

I love Joaquin, he's so real and no bullshit and very talented and smart.

This is the most coherent Joaquin has been in an interview. I wish I could hang out with him. I imagine he’s so chill off camera.

He’s an excellent actor. Joaquin is one talented dude.
