The True Story Behind "Black Hawk Down"

Ойын-сауық

“For the first time in my career, we were on the defense. That shook me.” Brad Halling, retired Army Special Operations.
This is the inside story of survival from the infamous Battle of Mogadishu, Operation Gothic Serpent, which inspired the movie “Black Hawk Down,” as told by an operator who was on the front line.
Retired Sgt. Maj. Brad Halling recounts the fight and resulting rescue mission that’s been etched into US Army special operations history.
“If they shoot enough rockets, they’re going to shoot a helicopter down.”

Aussie Vet here. I can understand you would have quite a lot of Vets in the comments section who joined during 9/11 but for me, watching the aftermath of the Battle of Mogadishu on the news was my "Wake up and choose" moment. I was 17 at the time and my cousins had deployed to Somalia with Australia's contingent of Peace Keepers. My enlistment date was 4th of October 1994. Although my deployments were to places like Bougainville, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan my decision to serve in the ADF was born through what these men went through.

As a former Army Medic I'm quite surprised that the medical unit wasn't recognized with citations. That medical team helped pave the way for saving countless lives during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Much of what I and other medical specialties learned was a result of the lessons from this battle.

Kind of cool story - a few years ago I was audiobook-ing the Black Hawk Down book so it was fresh in my mind. On a walk at a local park my wife saw a memorial marker and idly said aloud "Rierson". Sort of as a joke I said "Delta Force Specialist Matt Rierson?" And she goes "uh..yes.." Matt Rierson was one of the Delta operators who survived the Black Hawk Down day then was killed the next day in a mortar attack on the airfield. He was from Nevada, Iowa, where I live. Tiny town, weird coincidence. I think if you Google Matt Rierson there's an image of the exact grave marker in the Nevada Park north of my house.

To all of my fellow veterans, ME and MY ENTIRE FAMILY thank you from the bottom of hearts for the sacrifices made. No one will ever understand the sacrifices that each individual made to do exactly what they swore to do and I appreciate every one of them. And to the families of those that didn’t make it back home, thank you for having an individual that was willing to put their life on the line for my family to be able to rest easy at night. A lot of us wonder when we get back stateside “why me” and I know I still ask that question everyday but the people I served with tells me that I’d do everything all over again if need be. After the pull-out and upon returning to the U.S., certain members who knew that we were friends briefed me on what happened. It did not surprise me that Randy would insist on trying to rescue the helicopter crew. But I still wept for not only Randy, but for Stephanie and the family. May God bless all of those heroes from Malaysian Battalion a.k.a MALBATT who sacrifice their life to save those Mountain Division, Delta Force and Rangers who involved in Battle of Mogadishu..they are unsung heroes in recovering those who injured and killed on that day..just using their APC and without support from Pakistani army's tank who fled away before entering Bakara Market..greatest gratitude for the Malaysian Army🤝👏🏻

Amazing video, guys! 👍 The map visualisation was very helpful to understand how the battle developed. I've listened to many soldiers retelling the fight, but this is the first time that I got a clear image of the events. It's great to finally hear the perspective of the surgeon and those in the helicopters. This story is so touching 🥺😭

Huge thanks for warriors like BRCC, SRS & BHAWK for being a voice to put this down in history and helping our veterans get through their tough times. Love you guys and keep up the good work 🤙🏽

I have been avoiding watching this video for the past 2 weeks because it would definitely get me chocked up. It kept coming up, so I finally hit play. I have familiarized myself about this battle and know how difficult this has been to everyone who was there. It got me chocked up and full of emotions. I am a veteran with 23 years of service and now retired. These moments of courage I would use to share every Thursday to my team when we deployed. Thank you… thank you for sharing. 🍺🍺 til Valhalla

Survivors guilt is crippling. It takes more than religion, more than courage, more than any kind of therapy in existence to overcome. I my opinion it takes a survivor to overcome it, and that person should not feel guilt but gratitude. They survived to help stop it happening again. The loss of one life can help prevent the loss of many. 'Utrinque Paratus'

Which is funny to me because when you need them they turn into extremely professional trained warriors They are awesome

I never knew there was a MASH unit onsite. I thought the hospital the injured were brought too was a mix of the UN forces hospital, the 82nd QRF base or back at TF Rangers compound at the airfield. That MASH unit, 100% deserves to be recognized, cause there are alot of guys alive because of them.

We had a field hospital set up on the back side of the University and the remnants of the old US Embassy. It was an amazing setup that saved many soldiers back then. One of my buddies got rushed there after taking shrapnel from a Mark 18 round that inadvertently hit the back end of our Humvee. We got him to the field hospital in several minutes and they performed their miracle on Spec. Belido and saved his life.
