The Toyota BZ4X Is A Good Car That Most People Should Avoid

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The BZ4X is Toyota's first large scale attempt at an EV. What they made is a pretty good car that does the one thing it needed to do real well very poorly.

    I’m about to lease one at 0% with a $17k rebate from Toyota and a $7k rebate from the government. The range is plenty for me and no more paying for gas. It’s comfortable and unique, couldn’t be happier with my decision. Update: I’ve had it for about a week now. It’s been awesome! I’ve actually gotten several compliments from strangers, too. I got a fully loaded limited. There’s a charger across from my workplace and I only charge once per week. It’s comfortable, quiet, has every feature I’d ever need, spacious interior, etc. honestly not sure where all the hate is coming from. Obviously if you plan on road tripping, this isn’t the car for you, but for the average joe just commuting to work and going shopping with it, it’s fantastic. Bonus if you’ve already got a level 2 charger at home. The rebates are just the icing on the cake. If you’re on the fence, I’d say at least go take a look! You can get these things for a stupid good deal right now.

    I'm driving this suv right now, and it's totally awesome. I use reading glasses and I find the information on the dashboard to be a little bit tiny for my eyesight but other than that it's amazing the trunk space allowed me to move a huge piece of furniture 66 inch length without any problem. Awesome, great love it 😍

    I own the bZ4X FWD, I don‘t know what everyone is complaining about everywhere. I average around 17kwh per 100 km and get around 450 km out of a full battery, also driving on highways. For me this is efficient enough and I really love this car

    I bought a 2023 Rav4 Prime Se back in July. I love the way it drives. The heavy battery gives it a much lower CG than previous iterations of the Rav4. Very stable, very little body lean in corners, and it's very quiet and easy to control both the speed and the steering. I wonder how the BZ4X would feel in comparison? If Toyota can actually make good on it's hopes for a 900-mile range solid state battery in the next few years, I'd be very willing to try a BZ4X or similar Toyota crossover with that much range.

The number 2 charging is pretty okay also manage to always get the max out of the car it's a very comfortable drive with a kick and yes you can get this out of a lot of EV's, I just generally like the BZ4X spacey look and feel, They fixed a lot of flaws and Toyota always has great service.

Superior to Tesla (for example lights filling with rain water, badly aligned panels.) which is arguably the most technically advanced EV.

    Actually, today, at least in Europe, the car is a pleasure. Lots have changed. First: In Europe, even the AWD model has Panasonic cells and quite good charging speed. Second: The worst bugs, that almost had me canceling my order, have been sorted out. With latest software update, we got fast charging 3.8 times from 10% to 80% before it throttles. The only thing I miss is wireless Android Auto. It works with Apple, but Android needs, at the time of writing, a cable. I hope the next software update adresses that problem.

    The bz4x/Solterra is way out in left field when it comes to dc fast charging and driving range. I originally reserved the Solterra. I had to cancel due to the embarrassing recall on the front wheels could fall off when rapid braking and sharp turns. Sorry to say Toyota and Subaru entered the EV market quite late. If the vehicles had a range of 300 miles and rapid charge time of less than 30 minutes, I would’ve considered it in a heartbeat. I make trips between New York and Baltimore often. This will take me forever to go to New York and back to Baltimore. This vehicle is considered the SLOW BOAT TO CHINA EV !!! I did buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD with an EPA rating of 266 miles. I got over 325 miles of range. This is my second trip with the Ioniq 5 from Baltimore to New York. In fact I made it to New York with over 96 miles of range remaining or 31%. It took me about 28 minutes to rapid charge to 90% at 150 kWh at a Electrify America charging station.

    I own a BZ4x I bought at the end of July - Limited AWD. While I do agree that the DC charging isn't what it should be and there's an initial adjustment to the steering wheel in the North America models, I otherwise find the car is a pleasure to drive and own. More importantly, the range I've gotten to date has been 260 - 270 mi. The car "learns" how you drive. I live near Seattle and took the car up to the mountains in August - about 100 mi. from home and averaged 65 mph with AC on for 80 - 90% of the trip and the range was spot on and continues to be. One advantage the BZ has over some other EVs such as Ioniqs and even Teslas is ground clearance. It's about six inches shorter than a RAV4 but is still much more elevated than some EVs. As the reviewer said, this car is for the common folk. Does its job and costs less than the $52K MSRP cited in the video.

    I learned all these things the hard way: by buying one on leap of faith. Man, was I wrong! There's some other issues with the suspension system too, which are not immediately apparent, but if you run into a curb, this thing is gonna get messed up badly. I mean, come on. I owned a Prius for many years; hopped curbs more than I can remember, and it never budges. With the bz4x, it happens once, on low speed hitting fairly low curb that is actually slanted outwards, and it knocked the steering column off center. They had to re-alight three wheels, for only one of them touching the curb. I mean seriously. The charging issue is real. It pulls much lower power than any car I happen to park next, and the two times a day ruined my first long trip, and made me hate this freaking car. I am a real owner, and I can prove it. My tag number is 1st-BZ4X, which tells you how idiot I was.

If it was me, I'm sure I would have happily hopped the curb and go back to the road, instead of sliding off the curb. Toyota inspectors concluded that I was driving at 27 mph, and the lane assist was not engaged, which is a lie, because I made it default. However.. 27 mph messes up your alignment?

    If you can get your hands on a Rav4 Prime, I think you will love it. I got one back in July, and it's the best car I've ever owned. Not a lot of towing capacity, but if it had more of that, it would have less EV range and worse fuel economy. The ONLY thing I wish my Rav4 Prime had, is more comfortable seats. The front seats are kind of small, and I know Toyota could have done better: I've sat in Camrys and Highlanders, and they have more cmnfortable seats. The charging scenario they described is not realistic. Why would you drive to 10% and then charge? It's not like getting gas, you do a couple of optimized quicker charging sessions on the way, there are apps to optimize this, if not in the car itself. And anyway, most people will charge at home and won't need to charge on the road every time they leave the house. If you live in an urban area, you don't need the AWD, so you should get the FWD that comes with more range and a faster charging battery, and drive with snow tires if you need to...

    Road trip recommendation for any EV is to charge no higher than 60-65%, since charging-curve for any lithium battery slows significantly by that point (hence the extremely long time estimated). As for the supposed inability to charge below 32°F degrees, that is a misprint. Corrected materials list that limitation at -4°F, where you must first wait for the battery-warmer to heat the pack before charging will begin.

  • @ronkemperful

    @ronkemperful

    11 ай бұрын

    Very primitive to have to wait for a battery warmer. Better EV designs such as Tesla automatically preheat the battery using waste heat from the drive motors and the heat pump SO that the car is ready to charge upon arrival to a Super Charger. I realize that this is Toyota's first full-blown effort at EVs and hopefully the thermal design of their future car's cooling and heating systems will improve to where the consumer doesn't have to pay attention to the temperature: heat over 100 degrees or cold below zero. Consumer Reports, Savagegeese (a KZread channel), The Car Care Nut (KZread channel)... to name a few have been quite critical of the very poor charging speed (not necessarily to full) and of the overly expensive price for what you get. If I personally considered getting the bZ4x, my use case would be just to have it as a getting around town car or for a work commute where only Level 2 charging is needed. But for any road trips fast charging for a cross country trip during winter would be a nightmare... I would have to have a Tesla as a main car in the garage.

  • @john1701a

    @john1701a

    @ronkemperful Owners don't have to pay attention to "heat over 100 degrees". There is nothing anyone has sighted where Toyota's liquid-cooling doesn't address high temperatures. As for not using waste heat better in extreme cold, that is a reasonable generational type improvement to expect. Keep in mind, initial focus was on longevity.

    This is the first and last video I'm going to watch on this car. Not interested. The back end reminds me of my Prius. I've had it for 16 years and I'm ready for a more normal looking car. And the display looks too funky. I've had enough of funky. Don't need a steering wheel in the way of my speedometer view. What designer missed that? No volume knob? Just another thing to eat at me. And forget about trying to find a plug while on the road. Not going to deal with a slow charge like that. My car search continues. Thanks for the video!

    I love the power and the way it drives/ride especially going up mountains. From 39% it took 1 hr 11 minutes at a public DC charging station to reach 100%. I didn’t take any chances and bought the home ChargePoint charging station. It does not take long to charge. It costs me $6 a month to charge my vehicle at home.

    $6 a month? Unless you only drive 200 miles a month. National avg of electricity is .16 plus the tank is 70 kwh. $11.20 for a full tank. You drive less than a tank a month. You should just get a bike. Save on insurance and vehicle price.

Very happy with our Hyundai Ioniq5 AWD Ultimate trim...we were Toyota owners for years and still have a Rav4 which we love but I think Toyota is making just a half hearted effort on BEV's...too bad. The charge rate is a joke and the fact you cannot really charge on a DCFC at a higher speed more than 2 times in a 24 hour period...crazy. Mike

  • @GR-gq1us

    Charging tips: Drive until you have 10-20% battery left, it will charge faster to 80%, on fast charging stations, than trying to charge from 60%. From 80% you should charge only if you have the time or you ready need to. Otherwise, it can take a similar amount of time than from 20-80%. Charging an EV is not linear!!! Linear logic doesn’t apply here. You’re welcome, pass the message, it took me a while to understand how EV charging works. A car reviewer should now that before talking about EV charging, you are just passing ignorance to your viewers mate.

    @@xenrin Ah, I just looked up images of the interior. Is it that little paddle that flips up and down? If so, that’s a lot better than only having up and down buttons on the dash, but it’s still worse than a dial because a passenger would be forced to use the dash up/down buttons if they wanted to control the volume. But yes, it’s smart that they added the paddle on the wheel. Thanks for letting me know!

    The only other SUV EV is the ID4, Tesla is not an SUV. I have a XLE 4WD BZ and have never needed to charge away from home living on Vancouver island. I have a Rav4 Prime we use for Comox trips and simply satisfied with the BZ. Yes there are other issues, no rear wiper, somewhat issues with MFD but they are really not serious. Buy a Tesla and see what the resale is after 4 years, my experience with Toyota has been great with 5 vehicles, it’s important to me to get a good resale value. And most important that for my business I have a proper SUV.

    This is a toy car. I am very sad to buy this car because its only problem is charging. First of all it takes long time to charge if 50% charged with level 3 or DC charging it will take 2 hours 30 minutes. Then you have to keep the car at full stop which you have to suffer in extreme cold, heat. After that if you start the car and turn on the heat and AC then you can run the car for one hundred miles. So don't waste your time and money buying this car. Thank you😅😅😂
