The Top 5 Byrna Hacks
Here are 5 things that you should know about your Byrna handheld launchers.
- Pre Puncture
One of the greatest features of the Byrna launchers is the pull-pierce technology that allows a CO2 cartridge to sit in the launcher un-pierced until you pull the trigger, simultaneously piercing the CO2 and firing the first round. BUT this does come at a cost of about ??% velocity on that first round.
If you know that you are about to engage someone and have an extra second to respond, you can make sure that first round is at full strength by leaving the launcher on safe and pulling the trigger. This will puncture the cartridge and charge the system, meaning that the first round you shoot will pack the most punch.
- Don’t need to slam the mag
I’ve seen how some of y’all are “seating” that magazine in the launcher… stop it! I know that the Byrna handheld launchers look at function a lot like a semi auto pistol, BUT this is NOT a contest to see who can seat the mag in harder. Just slide the mag in until it clicks and your good, got it?!?!
- How to clean a ball break
So you’ve treated your loaded launcher with the utmost care, and somehow a chemical round has broken inside the launcher. First of all, don’t panic. Gently eject the magazine over a container and then place the launcher in water to wash off the remaining powder. Just make sure you place the launcher in a warm place to fully dry, and throw a little oil down the valve as per in the maintenance instructions.
- Eco rounds will disintegrate
Since their launch, the Eco Kinetic rounds have been extremely popular due to the fact that they are inexpensive and great for training anywhere. Just remember that these are not intended to be left in the launcher. They are made of a coated powder and if left out in a humid environment they will disintegrate within a matter of just a few days. This will inevitably leave residue in your launcher. But if this happens, see tip number 3.
- Change out your CO2
I get it, we all want to stretch our dollar… I mean you can just cut the moldy part off the cheese right??? But stop “saving” your pierced cartridges for later by leaving them in the launcher because you only shot 5 rounds. Your launchers will last a lot longer if they are not constantly left under pressure for extended periods of time and you won’t wonder if you CO2 is still good when you actually have to use your launcher to defend yourself. They cost less than a dollar… how much is that coffee you just bought?? Yeah about 8 CO2 cartridges worth… I thought so.

The tip about piercing the cartridge by pulling the trigger with the safety on was worth the whole video; everything else was a bonus. Also good to know you can just dunk it in water to clean it out.

I just found out about that a couple of days ago. Just ordered the LE.
Here's a HACK we came up with. We keep a fire extinguisher, first aid kit & a Life Vac all in a central location in our home & all wall mounted together for emergencies. Logical then a Byrna ought to be there as well. How to wall mount? Using a wall mount mail box 9.75 x 6.25 x 3.25 we lined it with felt changed the medallion it came with to the Byrna coin from the Bryna case and no one is the wiser what is in that black box mounted on the wall next to the fire extinguisher READY to deploy IF ever needed at home. How about Byrna coming out with a Byrna storage box? There five other Byrna's in our home every family member has one...Prepared to defend. Love the products. Looking forward to the shotgun rounds. Keep up the good work.

Just bought one. I have my carry permit but figured I can use this first dependent on the situation. If I need to use my pistol then at least I tried less than lethal first. Should help in court that I tried to stop an attacker before using deadly force.

If you have a pepperball in for the very first shot they've been known to crack after a long. time if you put a kinetic ball in first this will eliminate that problem

That magazine spring loaded lever needs a higher tension locking device. Can't tell you how many times I've launched the mags rounds to the ceiling with just one slight wrong angle while loading or a light touch while handling
Got a new SD but first time I used it several kinetic balls fell out of the barrel after the first round. This happened several times with different magazines. Advice?
Re: the GREEN practice balls. I have had 2 instances where the ball explodes in the gun. Had a hell of a time cleaning it out and still I think there's stuff in there. I want to take the gun apart and clean it. Can you make another video showing the proper procedure to taking it apart and cleaning and lubing it? Please. Thank you. I’m pretty sure they have a video up showing the lube kit. Probably just submerge in a bucket of water, Iike they showed in this video. Let air dry and perform the maintenance (lube kit).

Mold can actually be a good thing in some varieties of cheese, although aged cheeses can be a dietary migraine trigger for some folks.

Hard to believe no one considered during the engineering phase a quicker Co2 reload than having to use a tool.
If you always want to have your Byrna Ready for self defense... are you recommending leaving an unpierced CO2 cartridge in the launcher and leaving it at the ready?

Great up know you can put it in water to clean it. I have green residue in mine from the eco rounds that I just couldn’t get out.

How long can you leave the Byrna loaded before the spring and balls wear out??
During our morning dog walk, we were attacked by 3 medium sized dogs off their leash. shot 3 OC balls within 5 feet. Shot all three dogs in about 2 seconds, the first second after getting shot they were startled, then the next second, the pepper took effect and they hauled a$$. Good info on co2 cart activation, thanks. For the dog attack, I had a fresh unpierced cart, went right to Fire mode as the dogs approached, then fired 3 balls, didn't notice any delay firing the first ball. However, I went back to the spot to look for the ball halves and found an unbroken ball. I suspect that was the first ball that shot after the cart was pierced and lost full power. Even though the first round didn't break, it still had enough kinetic effect to make the first dog pause until OC powder from the next 2 shots affected all three dogs. Going to practice pulling the trigger in safe mode to activate the cart first, then have full power ready for first shot.
I would love to know why you offer many different colors in the cheaper launchers but only black and orange in the most expensive LE model. Would love to see the tan color and also camo in the LE model

Kinetic, kinetic, Max, Kinetic, Max… in that order… first two kinetics is to see if they comply. Then hit them with the Max… that should do it. But if not, one more kinetic and max to finish

#3 is hard to believe, really the whole gun in water? Wouldn't it rust or something with the water hiding in places you can't reach air drying?
Keep the ecos sealed with Boveda 50% they last way longer. They swell and misfire if humidity is Florida like. Pull out train, put away unused ones.
Please explain the difference between your 8g. cartridge and all the other 8g. cartridges. Now explain why that difference exists. Thank you.

Tip: Don't disassemble your Byrna gun. The hammer is a pain in the rear to get back in properly.
Byrna hack: Shop for accessories like fanny pack / backpack as amazon products and get them for a FRACTION of the price Don’t buy the tactical rifle. Get your paintball gun cleaned by your local shop and it’ll do the same. Best of luck to Byrna but so much of it is so overpriced
If you fire the Byrna while it's on safety, doesn't that reduce that first shot because it's not fully charged. It would swear you guys have said in the past that you should switch to fire mode, then pull the trigger to pierce the cartridge which charges the launcher, then pull the trigger again to fire it at full strength. 🤔

I think that refers to the second batch. I ordered one on the day of their launch and just got it on Tuesday. High demand is a good thing in the long run.

@@josephwoods5891 I shot holes in my tent target with my SDXL… lol. I just ordered the new tent target today. So, no. I can’t wait. I’ll probably set up some boxes or something over the weekend. The fit and finish looks really nice. The metal body is a nice upgrade. The hi-viz sights are very nice.
When are you going to redesign the gram extension, so that 99% of the lights on the market actually don't hang down to a point where the buttons are unusable with the trigger hand? BTW mine is for sale for this very reason. Went with an aftermarket flush mount system which is what Byrna should have created in the first place. Second issue is the sloppy fitting magazine. Customer service states unequivocally that it's part of the design so you don't crush the pepper projectile. Yeah. Nice try. Took mine apart and it is indeed sloppy manufacturer tolerance. Stop b.s'ing your customers.
Most co2 pellet and BB guns can have a co2 seated ”indefinitely” without being pierced. These guys keep saying that like it’s a something special. This is not 1955. So this is no selling point. And why would you not be able to use 3$ pellet gun oil why do you have to pay 20$ for the oil? Interesting concept but a total ripoff. Luckily I got one for 100$. Then I went on an online market place- use your imagination-and bought the kinetic rounds for about 20$ free shipping. 300$ for the chemical rounds and only getting around 90 or so costs almost as much as a new byrna. This is the ultimate ripoff to people who live in non legal states. Do yourself a favor folks. Get a shotgun. When Daniel kicks down your door high on meth, he won’t feel a damn thing. There so many vids of people getting shot by these paint ball guns aka “launcher” ( haven’t seen a rocket launch out of this yet) and they just laff. Of course it’s going to hurt. Go and get shot by a paintball gun. Probably hurt worse and you. CAn get two paintball guns for the price of one of these; reason why paint ball guns are used in prisons and not byrna- to all those who don’t know “byrna” is a play on words in which drug dealers and rappers call their guns. A burner gun is like a burner phone. Yes it’s dirty and you dont want to get caught with it. Seems like someone’s son was into hip hop at some point and heard a rapper. CAll a gun a burner. They also call them biscuits and toasters… And again, wtf is the deal with the price for ammo? If that’s the case sell the byrna for 150$ change the diameter of the round and patent it and then charge 500$ for 100 rounds. Now your in business. PS my coffee costs 98 cents at McDonald’s. Who the hell pays 8$ for a cup of coffee???

Don't know of another gun I can legally carry concealed without a permit here in CA. And trust me, that is a MAJOR issue. So no, no shotguns for me here, but I'm glad you are able to live somewhere where it's less frustrating for you to defend yourself. Count yourself lucky, because someplaces, this is as good as it gets, and I'm glad someone designed something I can use.
