Keep in mind, this is June 7, 1972... Lynda had only been in the group for a few weeks, as Cindy Birdsong appeared with them on Merv Griffin on January 27, 1972, and Lynda was recruited sometime in April. Of course, she was just a temporary stand in while Cindy Birdsong was on maternity leave, and so 15 months later, she was gone, and Cindy was back.

Lynda Laurence was never a temp stand in. She was hired by Motown on a permanent basis. After Jean left, Mary was giving more leads to Lynda. But Lynda was also pregnant and felt that management Mary had chosen was insufficient and so she too left. That is when Cindy came back. Now when Cindy did return Mary announced that this situation was temporary, but Cindy wound up staying.

That is true. However, shortly after this Dick Cavett Show and the release of their Jimmy Webb album BOTH Jean and Lynda left the group. Jean and Lynda felt that Motown no longer was promoting them. The Jimmy Webb album did not receive any promotion from anybody. I heard the Jimmy Webb album and I have to say it may have been an artistic success but it did not have any commercial appeal. It did not even sound like a Supremes album with all of the extra chorus of voices that Jimmy Webb added to many of the songs. After Lynda joined after replacing Cindy who replaced Florence I think Motown just felt it hard to maintain any loyalty to the group with all the replacements going on. If it wasn't for Mary hanging on as the only original member, I doubt that Motown would have even acknowledged the Supremes as a group at all when Sherrie and Susaye arrived.

@@jackjules7552 - Yes, "Flow Joy" and "Automatically Sunshine" were two heavyweight songs in 1972 and sadly, what I consider the end of the second golden era of the Supremes. The goal of the Jimmy Webb album was supposed to expand their audience like the original Supremes tried to do with their periodic specialty albums. But it was a costly decision that ended their streak of hit recordings after Diana left.

@@jackjules7552 - Although I enjoyed "Bad Weather", I think the song I gravitate towards most after their Top 40 period ended was "Your Wonderful, Sweet Sweet Love". It did fairly well by reaching #59 and was part of the magic of 1972, which I consider the final year of my childhood. It's kind of symbolic that I lost my Supremes and the joyful innocence of youth at the same time. I guess that's probably why I adopted Jean as my second mother and why she means so much to me today.

There were only two official lead singers of the Supremes: Diana Ross and Jean Terrell, both appointed by Berry Gordy as stabilized leads. Jean remained as lead for nearly four years. Hence, it was not a revolving door at the time of this interview. When Jean left, the group suffered a major blow and record production ceased for nearly two years. Mary worked hard to restaff and redesign the group as an ensemble act with herself and two or three singers very evenly sharing leads on all lps and performances. Scherrie was not a third lead and neither was anyone else. With Jean's departure the "unique Supremes voice" projected by her and Diana was gone, and the group sounded much more commonplace.

When diana ross laughed, they were still a pretty good group, but there was nothing special about them. Lynda, the one on the left is very beautiful, but I don’t know what kind of toys she has. They should’ve just retired the group and diana ross laughed. She was the star, and they couldn’t find a star to take her place.

They aren't "together" here and you can feel it. Even the energy level is low. Also, someone was commenting on the group and its "lead singers." After Jean left, Scherrie Payne shared a lot of leads with Mary but she was definitely a lead singer: in fact, when it comes to pitch, dynamism, and control, Payne had what was probably the best voice of any Supreme. A big, powerhouse voice, full throughout its range.

Payne had a strong voice, but she was a belter and sounded much more commonplace than Jean or Diana, who both had that special Supremes sound. There was never an appointed "third lead." After Jean left, they became an "ensemble" group. In truthful fact Scherrie, Mary, and Susaye shared leads on songs very, very evenly. Scherrie was not a third "lead" singer of the Supremes. @@step3892 There's nothing commonplace about Payne's voice. Her range was wide: she could be bluesy and then sound very lyrical. Some of the material they gave her was commonplace, leaning more toward disco, but when she tackles My World Is Empty or Maybe This Time, she shows what a great singer she is with a voice that can go anywhere. I saw Terrell with the group live four times. I liked her and agree she was a stylist--but by the last time I found her voice somewhat garbled and she never seemed to really focus on the audience (unlike Ross who didn't have the biggest voice but knew how to sell anything).

I like Terrell and Ross' voices--in fact iIloved them when I was younger--but we don't agree: I think Payne was just a better singer--and technically, she just was.

It's not fair to compare their situation to that of a male group. Men don't get pregnant and therefore don't have to stop in their tracks. This interview is from summer 72. By then Lynda Laurence had been in the group for half a year, replacing Cindy Birdsong who had left to give birth to her baby. Lynda stayed only 18 month until she got pregnant herself. After her maternity leave, Cindy returned in late 73 or so. Of course, group dynamics played a part as well, but in general girl groups are less stable, mainly because they want to become mothers eventually. It's hard to travel all over the world with a toddler. And what about the ever-changing line-up of the Temptations after 1971? I never heard anyone calling them a revolving door. Double standards? Just saying. Btw, Mary's reaction to that troublemaker was so cool. And she looked stunning.

@@davidbetsey2437 I have often wondered if Mary regretted letting Cindy go in January 1976. In Supreme Faith, Mary certainly had nothing good to say about Susaye Greene. The weight Cindy had gained wasn't noticeable to the audience, and if fitting into the gowns was an issue, they had to make major alterations to all of Cindy's gowns when Susaye joined the group. I have an out-of-the-box thought that Cindy should have rejoined the group after Mary left in the summer of 1977, but that the former Supremes should have continued on under another name.

Age is being relegated to the old people's dating site where you will have to kiss people with false teeth, sagging bodies and shrinking libidos. Age is having to get used to being overlooked and ignored by the people you desire to be with. Age is always having to deal with some physical pain or having to spend too much time getting prescriptions refilled and attending doctor' appointments. Jean looks like she gets irritated with Mary. I think their friendship was dying down even though this was 1972 Jean and the new gal Lynda would leave some months later in late 1973. In Mary's second book she speaks how Jean copped an attitude with her and wouldn't speak to her for a bit so this maybe was the time that they weren't really communicating much. I've heard how Jean could be aloof at times from fans so though she possessed so much grace and talent she wasn't aligned in the show biz light the way Mary was. In the original group Mary and Diana were aligned in the spotlight but Flo was more a home girl who wasn't caught up in the light. She and Jean were similar in aspects to this.

There were so many good black female groups back in the 60's and the 70's. What happened with music. I'm no boomer. I did not exist back then ;)

@Charlie Brown No, only Mary Wilson in the centre is an original Supreme. The other original members were Diana Ross (who left in early 1970), Florence Ballard (who was replaced by Cindy Birdsong in mid-1967) and, until 1962, Barbara Martin.

@@ianbauer4703 Ross felt she was the sole talent of the Supremes once she orchestrated the exit of Florence Ballard (founder and 1st lead vocalist of the Supremes) and went on to a solo career but fans of the original Supremes are inclined to see Ross as an egotistical bitch who slept her way to the top.
