Diana Ross rise to stardom at any cost

Diana Ross was rumor to do anything to become the star back in the day. You couldn't denied her talent to become a star but were the rumors true of becoming a star at any cost.

As for promoting Diana over Flo, she was anointed well before she started sleeping with Berry. The issue was commercialism: which voice sold more tracks. While Flo had an impeccable singing voice, it was Diana's that brought in the money amidst an era of racial turmoil & discord. Berry thought as a strategic businessman and clearly it worked out in the end with Motown rising as a juggernaut record label with Diana Ross & The Supremes being the most significant factor in that catapult to stardom...and it wouldn't have risen as much had Flo been lead.

At that time it meant that she could walk into a room with white men and take control. Diana's insecurities manifested privately, but publicly she was The Boss. Mary Wilson went to her grave talking about what Diana did. She could never separate herself from the Supremes because she was stuck in the 60s. The day Diana left the Supremes Mary should have also and went solo. What Diana did was wrong, but at the same time there was not a manual on how to be a young Black female superstar. Not only she was a powerhouse vocalist that was comparable to the likes of etta jams, aretha franklin, mahalia jackson and barbra streisand, she also had potential skills in dancing, acting, stand up comedy and songwriting. When they tried to replace Flo when she was sick with walking penumonia at the copa, the owner threatened to cancel them as they saw flo as the banter for the group's live performances. Are you really justifying her spoilt behaviour because she is successful? Wrong will always be wrong. "Diana did Diana"...? What does that even mean?? (I know what you are TRYING to say but its very ignorant). Diana is not exempt from humility because she is a Legend who, as you outlined, has made a successful life for herself and for her children. On her journey to success, she made some awful, bratt-like decisions/ choices, or "mistakes" I suppose, and, probably, it was as a result of immaturity... I mean, she WAS fairly young at the time of these incidents.... but that doesn't change the fact that she was wrong for her behaviour. Even legends make mistakes, even legends have to take responsibility and apologize when they are wrong (although an actual "I am sorry" isn't always the way it has to be done) and it seems, they've grown up and become cordial.... its unfortunate though, that this story will always exist, even after they've grown and moved on. Always be kind to people, you won't want to be the "villain" / "the mean one" in anybody's story, especially if they become super successful....

I KNOW because I have SAT 'at her feet' while she told me a LOT of things about the industry, and brought the subject up herSELF without any influence. And Flo herSELF has said the EXACT SAME THING way before Mary ever came forth With it. But she's always Speaking UP for the other two in spite of the things the public believes and the media plays on! Miss Ross has not, except to benefit herself. As you can see, she immediately started in on Mary singing 'her songs'... but forgets that Barbara, Louie, Liza and others don't say that when she sings 'THEIR songs'.... and these songs are just as MUCH Wilson's as they are Ross's. They ALL were and ARE SUPREME and WORTHY. And they are WONDERFUL! I continually pray for proper reconciles! I Do!

To say, that Diana Ross; would stop at nothing to rise to the top, one thought comes to mind, is that she sold her soul for fame. Not to mentioned, her daughter Rhonda Ross; is Berry Gordon; biological daughter, who was told while coming of age; that Berry was her uncle. Last, but not least, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson; started the group call the Supremes. Diana wasn't even thought of until later. Do the research on Diana, the people at Motown didn't have anything kind, to say about this woman and also, she was sleeping around with various Motown male artists.

Mary admitted that Diana's agressiveness made the SUPREMES great. One can't help but wonder just how far do you go in pursuit of greatness(?) They were "childhood friends" from 13 yrs old when all they had was each other and a BIG DREAM. It speaks to "character" when referencing the things she did to get to "superstardom." It's a shame that her selfish insecurity blinded her from her own genuine talent. She had the "gift" Mr. Gordy wanted to support financially; she didn't have to cut her friends' throats. She got what she wanted but to many she will always be on the wrong side of history. Fame, at the cost of hurting anyone you think is in your way, is "devil's work."

@vic1101ful You have drunk the Kool-AID! You know nothing other than to repeat the age old propaganda. Everyone knows Gladys Knight has always been a better singer and performer than Diana Ross! (Diana Ross admitted that in so many ways herself). Next, Berry Gordy wanted Freda Payne, not Diane Ross! The only reason Freda did not become the first First Lady of Motown is because her mom, Mrs. Farley would not let her sign with Berry Gordy. Diana Ross decided early on to use sex to get herself and the Supremes promoted within the ranks of Motown artists. She all but says so. Go check out her interview for "Inside the Actor's Studio". You cannot convince anyone that she was such a great talent unless they already want to believe that and there are way too many videos that prove that Diana Ross was a average, mundane talent. There were many, many women that were more talented and certainly more beautiful. High polish? Glamour? HA! Diane Ross was gangling, hard looking tomboy. The glamour dimension to the Supremes came from Mary Wilson. Ross use to borrow Wilson's clothes and ended being named the best dressed girl at Cass Tech H.S. in Detroit. This becoming a waste of time since the truth about Diana Ross has been out there for decades now beginning with Mary Wilson's bestseller "Dreamgirl, My Life As A Supreme". So whatever you say now is fantasy, personal opinion based on personal preference.

Diana Ross was from the projects and wanted more out of life. There is nothing the matter with ambition and she put fourth all the hard work that goes along with it. Berry Gordy didn't have a road map, he was creating the blueprint! We all know by now that the world of showbiz can be cutthroat and you have to have a thick skin on top of being talented. It was the 60's and 70's so Diana Ross had to be twice as good as her white counterparts in order to compete. She and Berry Gordy did that shit! Together they trailblazed and changed the game. You can't accomplish those sorts of things and expect to please everyone. Honestly, I don't get all the disdain toward Diana Ross. I guess all the people talking negative things about Diana Ross here and everywhere else would reject a good job offer in order to please their friends. Berry Gordy was a businessman first and above all. He knew where the money was and who had the most marketable voice. 12 number one singles with the Supremes and 6 more as a solo artist plus an Oscar nomination and a gazillion of other achievements are proof of that. He believed in her more that she even believed in herself. Business is all about money so, their relationship was second to that. There are trains that only come once in a lifetime. If Diana Ross was a guy, we would be thinking of her as a powerful, important man instead of a bitch. Take that offer, you are not offending anyone. If you don't take it, another person will take it for you. They are not going to feel sorry for you, right? Life is hard so, if someone believes in you, don't deny that opportunity.

Lmao 😂🤣 It's the same tired black jealous bitches (as my mother said): Mary, Flo, Gladys and Patti. They all wanted Diana's spot so bad. But they either couldn't sing, were too ugly or didn't have good oratory skills, manners or expert fashion sense. They were MAD with envy 😡 Diana was very much LOVED at Motown by the people who truly mattered 👇: Michael Jackson Stevie Wonder Marvin Gaye Nickolas Ashford Girl Askey Valerie Simpson Smokey Robinson The Temptations Rick James Suzanne dePasse Mickey Steveneon Janie Bradford Claudette Robinson Cindy Birdsong Holland Dozier Holland Lionel Richie Berry Gordy etc...etc....etc....

weve all heard the stories about Diana, but when youre that talented and driven, its kinda to be expected up to a point, shes the best, shes the mega super duper star who out shines everyone and thats just how it is. it might not be fair on mary and florence obviously, but its like when you got michael jordan or maradona on your team you just gotta give em the ball, get outta their way and let them do their thing / the business. *and it doesnt even matter if /that florence had a better stronger voice than diana, many top singers to, but where it actually really counts- dianas voice is silk, velvet, pure magic, its perfect and no-one can beat it.

I love Diana Ross! Talent and shine and determination Great performer And all But!!! Mary Wilson Florence Ballard and Cindy Birdsong should have been treated better during those years! When I say better I mean Lead a song See if it would been a hit That would not have taken any thing from Ross!!

It was a pioneering time. Those kinds of risks didnt make sense to Gordys mindset. He had a formula that he felt worked and he wanted to stick with it. He was scared to take that kind of risk with The Supremes. -- it was such a pioneering time that girl groups these days can only learn from some of the mistakes Motown made with The Supremes.

REALITY CHECK --where is Diana today-- she is NOT where she should be-- she is NOT as popular or even with her looks as she should have been-- she is known and still loved by many --- BUT -- there still is that sadness about her being the DIVA...and the loss of life and shunned friendships that were forsaken --cause -- she thought??????? she was gods gift to music--- and it never worked out--- Diana came back to America--- where she should have stayed in the first place-- she learned her lesson the hard way-- like most of us do... God gave the gift of the 3 Supreme s.. . and Diana will always be remembered for that.. God Bless her..

It's fair to say the most successful people in life are usually the most corrupt. Money is the root of all evil. Love is everything. Most of these celebs are hypocrites because they preach LOVE LOVE LOVE during their shows and yet complain when they don't get enough payment! That's all I am saying.

Like it or not, Diana Ross was a huge talent, the like of which we don't see today. Berry Gordy pulled Gladys Knight off the tour. Remember these girls were in their early twenties at the time, and every artist at Motown was notoriously manipulated by the company. If anyone signed with Motown, they were immediately in debt. Don't be too hasty to pour scorn on Ross. She took The Supremes and Motown to the highest highs in her wake.
