    To be clear, Mary deserves every bit of recognition for her role in forming the legacy of the Supremes. What's sad is that she allowed her own legacy to become one of bitterness, anger and pettiness. The music business is full of examples of popular groups where one member went onto solo stardom, that's just a fact. I agree with Diana that Mary allowed herself to become a victim...she made a whole publishing career out of it! Just sad at the end of the day. Meanwhile Diana is still putting out positive music (like it or not) at 77. Did she step on some toes along the way? Sure. But no more than any man who's ever tried to climb the ladder of success. Haters gonna hate. Keep on keepin' on Ms. Ross! RIP Mary..the music lives on

    Posted by Lidia: As good as "The Supremes" were, Gordy knew it was Diana who had what it took in every single way (That's why he fell in love with her). She was the whole package, her voice, her looks, her elegance and the distinctive classy style she has to shine on her own. Diana, naturally, outshines everyone, men or women, becoming the star even when sharing the light with great ones... "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" a duet with Stevie Wonder shows how she does it, she not only sings, she engages completely with Stevie and with their audience. Diana knew her worth and her power, flied solo and negotiated her business deals in private and solo...The other Supremes could have continued making great hits as a group, if that's what they loved...What stopped them?

    What stopped them wasn't the talent, it's the networks and power players and the business investment backing that you need to propel your career. Berry put all that behind Diana successfully. MW and Sandy for whatever reason couldn't muster an industry around themselves. Diana was hungrier and smarter.

  • @Marsena

    This is not rocket science! It was the Diana Ross "Return to Love" Tour, not the Supremes Tour. When you are a part of someone else's tour, you either accept what is on the table, or decide that you don't agree with the terms and go your way. Mary and Cindy could not possibly get equal billing because it was NOT their tour! Period! Diana was simply trying to use a portion of the concert to pay tribute to her time with the Supremes. But it was still HER concert, so she takes precedence naturally.

  • @hardren101

    @hardren101

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Marsena i am not in disagreement with you but the facts are a little distorted.....this is the spin diana put on it once the shit hit the fan.....before i enter into the diana spin...keep in mind that diana already did/does a supremes medley in any tour she does this fact is what i believe diana based her rational on(but she does not perform the original supremes songs in their entirety but an abbreviated version)........ Diana released her final album on motown. and was putting together a tour to promote the album(which is standard with any new album)....a close friend of diana's (scott Sanders) suggested diana invite the two former members and add a supremes segment where they wld perform some of the biggest hits in their entirety......somewhere along the line that suggestion evovled into an entire show of supremes songs in their entirety(songs from diana's album wld also be included)...this tour went on 2 be promoted as the supremes return to love tour(once the surpremes return to love tour was cancelled because of poor ticket sales.....a few years later diana went out on tour and rebranded the tour....diana ross return to love tour). Diana attempted to spin the story as if they were invited guests on her tour and that is not xactly the case....Diana was assuming the role of promotor(similar to the way Floyd Mayweather jr does).....which meant she wld lay out the upfront money ....she was pulling the strings behind the scenes but had a middle man making the offers...when mary was 1st contacted she inquired who the promoter was and could not get a clear ans...when she did some digging...she learned that diana was acting as the promoter....that is when the shit hit the fan(because mary figured that if diana was the promoter....by the end of a successful tour diana cld easily walk away with $20 million in pure profit...but the promoter lays out miiions of dollars in advance promoting the tour,booking the venue,printing tkts and insurance)...when things fell apart with mary..diana decided to move head anyway.......and recruited two girls who never really had a connection to the surpremes.....the name of the tour was discussed on the oprah winfrey show..it was promoted as a surpremes reunion tour....diana believed that she was always the main factor of the group and therefore did not need mary.....turned out this was not the case....the tkt sales were very,very poor and diana was forced to cancel the remaining tour dates....so mary had the last laugh but cost herself millions in the process.....because mary tours and earns money but she does not routinely earn $4 million dollars which is what she was offered for the tour...

    +Chase Jackson wow! I didn't know that it started out as a Supremes tour with Diana as promoter. Thank you for the clarification. Yeah, that sounds like a mess! I can see now that Mary had every reason to be upset about the unfairness of the situation.

    +Marsena they way i xplained it here was the xact way it was xplained by wikepedia in diana's bio...she also appeared on oprah and xplained that it was a reunion tour of the surpremes....diana who detests negative things said about her had anything pertaining to the Y2K tour removed frm her bio....i am not in disagreement with you and respect that you are entitled to your opinion.......i believe that diana did not want it revealed that she was the promoter because of the problems it wld create if mary new....let's go back to the surprems original inception to motown and evolve to present day which i believe wil xplain my rational.....when the surpremes 1st signed with motown they started out as a three member girl group all equal......some where along the line diana became the primary grp member to sing lead on all their songs (unprecedented) move head 2 more years and the name of the 3 member girl group was changed to Diana ross & the surpremes and the other two had been reduced to background singers(while mary pretends to not be bothered by this her wrds n actions don't align)......diana went solo and some wld say built a very successful solo career.....while her album sales declined by the mid-eighties(which is the norm in the music industry)it is an irrefutable fact is that she has toured successfully and still does to this day. In diana's divorce settlement she walked away with $25 million dollars and a seperate trust for her two sons that she was the administrator of(while diana remains an administrator of the trust....she has no pwr once the boys turned 21).......so money was not a factor in her decision to promote a surpremes reunion tour.....while mary tours and earns money...she peforms in much smaller venues than diana ross and her ticket pricing is much lower... In diana's mind..when the surpremes broke up they were billed/promoted/branded as Diana ross & the surpremes and the other two had been reduced to background singers.....fast forward 30yrs later and a reunion wld not change what diana viewed them as when they broke up....background singers......while it is an irrifutable fact that Mary wilson is a founding member of one of the most successful girl grps of the 60's that did not make her able to command equal pay as diana ross other than in her own ego.....the stance mary took in 2000 is the stance she shld have taken when diana was asserting herself as the lead singer of the surpremes and reducing the other two to back=up singers.....I think that as mary has played this over in her mind over the years....she regrets that she did not stand in her convictions (as flo ballard did)and take a stance but she was young naive and afraid to stand in her convictions.....but again no disrespect to you and your opinion.

    +Marsena Especially when you consider it's the same mess Diana has been pullling since Mary asked her to join the group with her and Florence in 1960! Diana bedded the producers at Motown so that she could get all the leads. Smokey Robinson's wife even had an altercation in the 60s with young Diana about it - google it lol. Then once Diana got her claws in Berry it was over for Supremes Flo and Mary AND virtually all other female acts at Motown from Kim Weston and Mary Wells to Martha/Vandellas and The Marvelettes. The only album both Flo and Mary get a lead vocal on the same album is the group's first album Meet The Supremes. By their last album as an original trio, they were fighting just to sing background vocals. This is the background history to Mary saying "no thanks" to the 2000 tour. After continuing the group legacy after Flo's firing and Diana leaving, the group had numerous top 10s and 20s in the US and UK during the 70s leading up to Flo's death in '76. Mary also had a best-selling book. She had every right to refuse the tour offer. Diana has done all she can to eclipse The Supremes legacy but the 10 (total of 12 including '67-69) #1s that Flo, Mary and Diana sang and released will always be embedded in pop history. It's just a shame she's the only one remembered when if you listen to Meet the Supremes she's hardly the best vocalist. The power of ambition...

There are millions of singers who don’t have voices like Mariah (who has a great voice, but one that I can’t stand to listen to, but I appreciate her status and stardom) Whitney had a voice back in the day, but that was short lived, pretty much like her career and her life. Eventually her voice was worth nothing. Diana has a different kind of voice. She never was a powerhouse vocalist and that’s ok. The music industry would be dreadful if they all sounded like Whitney and Mariah. Diana came along and helped break down boundaries and barriers, alongside a few other female black artists. She was the full package too. A voice and bucket loads of star power and charisma.

    As I read years ago, right after Mary published "Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme", ONE opinion that I read by some was that Mary and a LOT of other Motown singers' shortfall was: they didn't realize that show business is a BUSINESS -- just like any other type business. That's why Mary and others couldn't understand that in order to 'crossover' in an act, you have to be marketable. Diana's voice wasn't the soulful earthiness that most Afr. Americans were used to, but hey -- it SOLD via crossover. Berry Gordy envisioned ALL of the Motown acts to crossover. When it came to The Supremes, Diana had the voice to achieve this goal. Show Business is a BUSINESS. You market the best talent that you have in order to be successful. Diana's voice was suited for pop music AND soul music. Her voice was marketable in both genres. Sure, Diana's not perfect -- she has personality flaws, too, but I cannot entirely blame Diana for anyone else's career direction since Diana went solo. Show business is a BUSINESS.

    VERY true. They all were talented. But Miss Ross was more marketable. To be honest. Miss Wilson's voice seemed more suitable to jazz. I think she would have been awesome in jazz. Miss Ballard was more soulful. But Miss Ross was great for crossover. Everybody had their own special talents. People get online and argue about comparing apples to oranges.

    I think that Diana acknowledges the way that both she, but mainly the music industry treated the other members of the supremes but she was so young and focused on her own dreams that it didn’t fully register until years later. I think her doubling the offer and trying to make Mary apart of the tour was her way of trying to fix that, but all Mary simply wanted was the respect that she so well deserved and her old friend back.

Milton asked Flo if she was interested in joining his girl band, and she agreed, and she asked Mary who also agreed. At exactly the same time, Paul Williams (of The Primes/Temptations) knew Diana and asked her if she wanted to join the group. Diana agreed, along with his girlfriend Betty McGlown. Every hit they had was fronted by Diana. If she had the worst voice then those records would never have sold. She sang lead on 12 number 1s and endless other hits. Her voice was considered the most appealing and commercial of the girls Now! This is the bit where you are completely wrong. I asked you if Diana had Berry's baby to further her career as a Supreme, to which you answered "YES". These are the facts which you seem to be ignorant of: Diana left the Supremes after the "Farewell" concert on January 14th 1970. She gave birth to their daughter, Rhonda on August 14th, 1971, exactly 19 months AFTER her departure from The Supremes. NINETEEN months after she left the group she had Berry's baby...so how can you claim she had his baby to make herself a bigger star when she was already a superstar, had already left The Supremes, and when she'd already been at Motown for over 10 years?? Your claim makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but it "clearly shows" nothing other than you're an idiot! And to note, Diana paid off Mary’s house. Loaned Mary money.- Mary was actually a pain in the ass and no one wants to talk about it. No one wants to talk about her drug use as well, which isn’t helpful when you’re trying to be friends with someone.

    I think it must hurt the Supremes to have Diana be the star, but really, Motown weren't stupid. Diana may not have had the strength in her voice of Florence, but she had a marketable soft pop rnb voice. She had the charisma too. Motown made her the lead for that reason. Look at shows like the X Factor, Simon Cowell works in similar ways, he puts people together, he tears them apart and says if someone would be more marketable than the next. The music business doesn't just work on whose better than who, it's a whole bunch of things that goes into making a 'star', not just vocal talent. But, Diana's lead sold millions of records world wide so obviously people loved her vocals. I simply love Diana's voice, she has a beautiful tone, softness and she can project too. She was talented, she had star power... she is a living icon, a legend in music. It's unfortunate that the other Supremes never got more of a spotlight, yes it is. Florence deserved more. Yet Diana's successs wasn't a fluke either.

    +Zelda Zonkin' Exactly. To me Diana's voice feels like a cool breeze. Barry Gordy even said that Florence and Mary had fine voices but they weren't unique like Diana's voice was.

  • @Slaychelle

    @Slaychelle

    +Zelda Zonkin' Diana's success was no fluke, from the early days when The Supremes were teased as the 'no hit' Supremes by other Motown acts, Diana was already having intimate relationships with producers at Motown. Then once her place as lead was solidified she started dating Berry as the hits began to roll in and from then on ALL promotional efforts were diverted to Diana. There is no way she couldn't have been a star. Offers came in for Flo for a movie...she was never told. Why? Because Diana was the focus. Why do you think incredible artists like Mary Wells and Kim Weston left Motown in the 60s? Because it was apparent that Berry was obsessed with Diana. Diana was charismatic and her voice unique but that's not why she became the Queen of Motown. She became the queen because she was bedding the founder, the creator and the CEO, who gave her everything she wanted at everyone else's expense. It's the oldest trick in the book.

Now as a single solo artist Mary Wilson can not touch Diana Ross on of her best day and we all know that to be true. And speaking of Diana Ross not selling, Diana Ross is currently in Las Vegas at the Venetian hotel to a sold-out audience.

Paul Williams of the Primes (later, the Temptations) invited Diana to join the group around the same time that Milton Jenkins invited Flo to find girls to join HIS all-girl group, The Primettes. It was Diana’s voice along with H-D-H/Funk Bros which created the magic of the group’s hits.

    Well, if Matthew didn’t have The Supremes to learn from, Destiny’s Child wouldn’t have gone the way it did. Matthew had Destiny’s Child studying The Supremes. So I’m sure he was fully aware of the dramas. And wanted do what Berry should have done.- although… Berry did offer Florence a solo deal, and she did not take it. I doubt he would have put much into her solo career anyway. He would’ve held her hostage. But even her ABC solo deal didn’t work out, apparently ABC was not happy with her recordings and pretty much shelved her work. Flo got settlement money from Motown, went on vacation with her husband. Came back to the states to find the lawyer stole the money. Just a mess
