@@kyleerrington8004 to “sell” is to make the other wrestler’s move look ultra effective. A good example is when the Rock took a Stone Cold Stunner. He flopped and flipped all over the ring to make the Stunner look super effective and powerful. Hogan is regarded as being a wrestler that you either sucked up to and do what he wanted or you’d be raked through the coals and end up doing it anyway. He had a lot of creative control and ended up with a lot of “political” control in the organizations he was in.

I always thought Shawn did this for one of two reasons: he oversold so much that Hogan would hate the match and agree for a second then third match, or he oversold so nobody would remember Hogan won, they would remember Shawn.

You're absolutely right about the second reason. Everytime I think about this match and rivalry the first thing that comes to mind is the fake Larry King interview and Shawn's antics and overselling. Hogan winning the match is a distant afterthought for me.

That last oversell with HBK getting knocked down with the big boot, getting up, flopping around, and falling down again gets me every time

@@boatshoes4life You must have done because literally EVERY pro wrestler that he ever worked with said that he sold their offense brilliantly and only no sold when he was Hulking Up,. His act would grate on a person if they were not a fan of his, and I get that totally, but to be honest 99% of the people who watched WWF from 1984-1992 and a massive percentage WCW from 1994 until 2000 were only there because of Hogan, so you can see why every promoter tailored the product to suit him.

@@RichSmithson See I don't think so. Hall and Nash were willing to work with Hogan for sure. Shawn was their boy through and through and I think that means it would have been 3 v 1 in that discussion. If anything I think they would have done a "Swerve" on Hogan and made them the big three in the company. After all Hogan was more annoying in his Hollywood persona than anything.

Hogan had it coming. This was the culmination of all the years he spent holding other wrestlers down due to his ego, HBK became even more of a legendary hero that night than he already was.

wouldn't be surprised. youd think bret wouldn't dislike anyone more than shawn but he does. its hogan. say what you will about shawn he worked with bret and they had incredible matches together. Hogan straight up told Bret "you're not in my league" and refused to even work with him and pass the torch in 1993. or even when bret went to WCW.

I'm a huge Bret Hart fan, and yes he got screwed, but "Who's your Daddy Montreal?!" is still the greatest line ever. And if I may steal a comment from a video of the Montreal promo..... "Imagine the money I could save on my energy bill with this kind of heat." Hahahaha!!! So true!!!

Of course Shawn carries the match because Hogan was nothing more than a tan corpse as he always was. A big boot, leg drop and a pose. How was Shawn supposed to make the match entertaining being hamstrung by what was good for Hogan? Shawn carried the feud and the match. as he always did when he was heel. The only time he didn't need to carry a heel feud was with Austin because Austin could actually work and string together more than a couple words.

Kudos for talking about that Montreal promo. Nuclear heat on HBK and he controlled the audience from the minute he came out , wearing a pink tie. Having fun and he meant what he was saying too. People need to see that promo now and see what real psychology is in wrestling. The best thing about that feud was the build and the match was fun, not great but fun.

To paraphrase Brian Zane's review of Summerslam 2005: "The ghost of Curt Hennig is telling you tone down the selling, Shawn."

@@Ario2547 I guess you missed the point. Listen to the promo when he alluded to hogan being about the money & not delivering for the fans. Yes Shawn was an asshole but he always gave the fans their money’s worth & stoled the show countless of times.

That Larry King segment was funny HBK was on one 😂

I wasn't watching wrestling when Shawn and Hogan did their thing and wasn't a fan of either one when I was watching wrestling prior. In fact, it was only a few months ago that their Summerslam match popped up while I was watching KZread. I decided to watch the match and I nearly passed out laughing with delight. I thought it was about time Hogan was treated the way Shawn treated him. I can see how some define Shawn's performance as unprofessional but deep down I see it as brilliant and well deserved. Thanks for another fantastic video!

That is the problem with Hogan. He was a hundred years old. Still wanting to beat the best. It's like it's not even close to realistic. For some old fossil to best wrestlers in their prime. Already over or being put over.

I don’t think I could ever feel sorry for Shawn again after the whole One Night Only with Bulldog when it comes to politicking. In the end, it wasn’t battle of Icon vs Legend, but of the Greatest Politickers in Wrestling. In the end, Hogan was the winner, proving that he is indeed the ultimate politicker. Even Shawn Michaels couldn’t out politic Hulk Hogan.

@@KEWLV1C that was on Davey Boy. It was a perfect heel move because it catapulted DX. Hell if Davey Boy won, we wouldn't even be talking about it. But EVERYONE remembers DX screwing Davey in his hometown. It's practically an unspoken rule in wrestling; you lose in your hometown (usually).

I was in the crowd for that Montreal Raw. HBK got us good. He's a legend that's for sure.

Man, talk about the 2 biggest egos clashing. Hard to take who's word over who's as both in the past have never been the most honest but definitely right call against Hogan here It is terrible unprofessionalism at its finest, one refusing to play ball backstage and one refusing to give them what could have been the best match in their career That Montreal heel promo though is bloody gold and is one of the loudest pops ever Great upload as always WB

This makes me love Shawn Michaels even more ever .. he was always my favorite wrestler since I was a kid, and I absolutely love how he exposed hogan in the most vicious but sarcastic ways possible here.. not saying Shawn is perfect, but I think he’s 100% right about everything he said about hogan

HBK did win, overall. He carried the feud, embarrassed Hogan and completely owned him in promos. Hogan's ''win'' was irrelevant in the end.

Aww one of Hogan's marks is salty his BS got publicly called out.

Hulk knew he had to back out . He couldn't up w Shawn on that Mic. Or in the ring. Shawn was telling the truth.

As a musician, I love the way the wrestlers entrance music are combined during the introduction of the videos. Brilliant work.

HBK's heel promo in Montreal was one of the greatest heel promos ever.

People forget that Heel Shawn was one helluva troll!!😂😂

Shawn's promos and over-selling in the match were the only entertaining things about this match and feud. Without them it would've been garbage and everyone here knows it. Bios knows it too.

This has one of, if not the best intro mashup you've done so far. Completely blown away!

This was 100x more entertaining than I expected - I think the format has a lot to do with it. Everything's in this vid, and the arrangement is great! Takes an interesting story and really pays it out. Thanks!

19:22 Yeah, I remember how Triple H and The Rock were on the brink of becoming stars in WWE back in 2002. Just not quite there yet. Stone Cold, Undertaker, Jericho, Benoit, Guererro, Angle; they all tried their best, but Hulkster was the big win needed for those two to finally get over. Before them, Hogan only lost to the big names in wrestling. Don't forget his semi-clean loss to Randy Orton in 2006 just before winning that same match. Nobody thought a guy called "Legend Killer" could come close to defeating a 50+ wrestler in the prime twilight of his career.

Rock vs Michael's.... I think rock would have diced up Shawn on the mic. Rock was not above ripping apart a gimmick 😄

I was there in attendance in Montreal that night. Watching the episode does not even scratch the surface on how crazy it was. I am from Toronto but my God Montreal fans whether it be hockey or anything else are the most vocal and passionate fans out there.

Unprofessional or not. Shawn Michaels made this match WAY more memorable than it would ever have been if they did this as a normal match. I'm glad he did it.

The selling of that big boot was EPIC!! 😂

As a kid I couldn't get enough of the build-up, some of my favorite memories as a kid I looked forward to those summer nights so much.

I was at summer slam for free won a trip with my bro from 99.5kiss in San Antonio and we saw Shawn Michaels in the airport when we left he was not in the best of mood and we know now but we stayed in the hotel as the wrestlers and met everyone from McMahon to Hull Hogan what a great memory. I’m in the Batista match if you fast forward to when they fight in the crowd you can see me when everyone backs up 🤘🏾

Two of the biggest ego maniacs in wrestling sharing a ring together. Only difference between the two? Shawn saw the errors of his ways, whereas Hogan was still Hogan. Even to this day, Hogan is still Hogan.

If I do recall I think that around this time Cena teamed up with HBK and Hogan in a 6 man tag on Raw the night after Vengeance 2005

I feel you missed out a key part. After the big boot Hogan delayed the leg drop by ridiculously long time. This had to be Hogan counter trolling him and the proof he knew what was going on.

The montreal thing where Shawn Michaels trolled the audience into thinking Hart would appear is one of wrestlings finest moments. Every time i rewatch it i get pumped up for Bret to appear and everytime i get dissappointed by it. Regardless of my knowledge and after seing it 50 times it always gets me and that is thanks to Michaels selling and absolute savagery. I love it.
