The Sponge Boy Mop™ Does Not Exist

Ойын-сауық

SpongeBob was originally named SpongeBoy, but someone was already using that name, so the ‘y’ became a ‘b’. A quick Google search may lead you to believe Nickelodeon changed the name after discovering SpongeBoy was trademarked by a mop company. But this isn’t true...

I think Kenny probably just assumed it was a cleaning product because it was called Spongeboy. The throwaway nature of “a mop or something” feels like he never actually knew what the product was.

I love debunking commonly passed urban legends/fun facts from my childhood. Just recently I found out that Snoop Dogg's brother in law that was killed in a police shootout was NOT the same guy who recorded the infamous Peanut Butter Jelly Time song. I cannot believe Cerebus somehow got involved in this story. To give some context: The tower Cerebus and the Flaming Carrot are inside of is flying, like a rocket, towards the moon. That is why he found Sponge Boy inside it and why he said the top is "about two hundred and thirty thousand miles" away (average distance from the Earth to the Moon).

The claimant, Troy Walker, did not do enough research on his claims before making them, setting his implausible story in 1991, years after Hillenburg had started work on his concept in 1984. So, SpongeBob was unintentionally similar to SpongeBoy. SpongeBoy is the friend of The Flaming Carrot. The Flaming Carrot has met Cerebus. Cerebus has met Spawn. There is a line directly tracable from SpongeBob to Spawn.

I only recognize Spawn from a very long and complex line of legal battles leading to DC taking Captain Marvel from Marvel and turning them into Shazam, so the line goes even further into Marvel, which has done a Fortnite crossover, and Fortnite did a crossover with Dragon Ball. OR we can go to the DC route, which has done a Looney Toons crossover, which can go into Warner Brothers, and that can go into anything WB has made. Including JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6.

Spongebob does *not* know SpongeBoy, so how is there a direct line there to Spawn?? And the SpongeBoy that effected Spongbob's name-change was the single-panel comic art that ended up on the pencil, and *not* the comic book SpongeBoy from the Flaming Carrot series. You just took two giant leaps to make a connection that isn't there lmao.

I mean, this isn't that unreasonable. Pretty much every source was based on hearsay. They noticed a character called Spongeboy, likely trademarked, and didn't look into it too much. Someone could've said "a mop or a sponge or something" in the original conversation, and it just got passed down in a game of telephone. Then when people started recalling it, the rumored version took precedent in their minds so that's what they went with. Nobody really cared enough to check for the original reason, probably because the original reason, itself, was somebody noticing something and mentioning it in a meeting. Of course no one would remember the exact conversation from so long ago very well. I totally think it's the Flaming Carrot comic that did it.

Hello, I live in Iceland and I want to correct something. "Svampur Sveinsson" does not mean SpongeBoy, it means "Sponge, Son of Boy". For context of the "Sveinsson" part, the last names in Iceland are not based on family names but based on the name of the father. Thor, Son of Odin is a good example of that naming system. If I had to guess, Google Translate probably led you to believe his name was SpongeBoy over here. Edit: "Sveinn" is a name here in Iceland so it could be "Son of Sveinn" as well.

Happy to see you make another video! I’m fascinated by these half-true, widespread claims. It reminds me of the claim that The Simpsons wasn’t popular in Japan because they have four fingers. Which always felt like a half-truth/lie. There was a recent video essay (by Slio) where he looked into that claim, and interviewed some Japanese fans. Mike Reiss, a Simpsons writer, repeated the four-finger answer in his book. I think people involved in those productions end up repeating these falsehoods because of a game of telephone. They hear it from a person in one department, it gets repeated…that sort of thing. So cool how much research you put into this! Those pencils are gonna end up in the Smithsonian. I actually love this breakdown, it has hilarious context to a few of the earlier episodes of Spngebob that I think were either references that didn't land with the audience at the time or (more likely) inside jokes from the people who created those episodes. I don't know if the doodle bob being born from a pencil was intentional, but either way, a pencil being one of the main concerns that lead to the name change makes having his evil doppelganger a drawing even more hilarious. The sky hook do feel like a direct poke at the Flaming Carrot though, which I think is a nice tough and fit in the Spongebob universe seamlessly.
