I think the reason the Spongebob backgrounds are so eerie without any characters populating them is because they give off liminal space vibes.

You know? When I was little I used to watch SpongeBob a lot. Watching it is actually among some of my earliest memories. It's a constant in my consciousness. Always there in some regard. To the point where a lot of my dreams involved it in some way. But because of how surreal and strange the show was sometimes, a lot of the time i would have these absolutely bizarre nightmares about it. Different from other nightmares I had at the time. Nothing was chasing me, my family wasn't abandoning me, I didn't fuck up something that lead to my death. There wasn't really any overt danger. But I remember I would always be stuck watching something SpongeBob related where nearly everything was. Off. I couldn't understand what was happening. Sometimes a character looked wrong or they'd just all be silent, or it'd be stuck on a live action part for a really long time and I couldn't figure out why. No matter what was happening, I couldn't change it. Couldn't turn the TV off, couldn't change the channel, couldn't mute it, unplugging it wouldn't even work. And because it was a dream I couldn't even close my eyes or look away. So I was always just forced to sit there and watch this uncanny version of SpongeBob play out, and it always made me feel queasy and creeped out, sometimes even outright panicking. This album is pushing all the same buttons for all the same reasons. And I can't decide if I love the nostalgia of it all, or if I hate it for making me feel this creeping dread and confusion I used to fall asleep and experience every night

That's an interesting reaction and I wonder if it is a common one too. I can't say I've dreamt about Spongebob like that but I had a similar thing with the playing of video games in dreams. There's definitely a hypnotic element to the album I think, if you put in the effort and listen to it properly I think you are likely to have an interesting experience. Also thank you for sharing this! Very interesting.

I used to have nightmares about SpongeBob too, and this comment is uncannily relatable. For me, sometimes the OHHHHHHH part of the theme song would just be playing in the room. No who lives in a pineapple, just oh. And it echoed too. Wasnt really scary but really really u comfortable. Another one id usually have, was those super ugly shots from episodes like just one bite or whatever happened to SpongeBob and those were the worst.

I had/have the same exact thing too, one of my earliest scariest dreams (not really a nightmare) was that it was a repeating image of Squidward who started off smiling, but slowly started to frown as the disturbing music playing got more and more disturbing. It would just repeat from the beginning. It was just on the TV and I felt like I couldn’t escape the room because of it. I have a little phobia of like those DVD menu select screens where shows imagery and plays music, which eventually repeats, and a lot of my nightmares involve technology that I just cannot control (maybe the TV is extremely loud, maybe there’s a virus, etc). It just always stood out to me the most than other nightmares, and the Squidward one was easily the weirdest.

@@TheKingofSpit oh dude if I heard the theme song ooooooh looping like that when I was younger and I couldn't make it stop I would've actually woken up screaming. Then again, that's probably bc I'm autistic and it sounds like a really weird version of sensory overload. The ugly shots being another focal point for you is really interesting to me though. They never really bugged me all that much when I was younger so much as the sudden medium changes. Like the patchy the pirate segments. I don't know why but kid me just could not parse why the fuck some real guy was in my cartoon all of a sudden, and watching bad things happen to him (or just some other dude dressed like a pirate) seemed to be the plot of a lot of unpleasant dreams. The absolute worst I had it was those fucking alien puppets from Atlantis squarepantis. They made me nauseous while awake and they made me freak out while asleep I'm like 80% sure I had one dream that was just a several hour loop of patchy looking for Encino but he just never finds it.

For me one of the most unsettling things about this album is its thematic relation to Everywhere at the End of Time. That music is what the dementia patient is able to recall. One of the things dementia patients are able to recall consistently, is music from their youthful years. Some will hum along with it because the tune still holds some connections together in their brain, they can recall it, consciously or not, it sticks with them. So when I see that concept used with references to SpongeBob, it feels more personal. Like this is representing my own trip through dementia. It's like I can hear my own youth slipping away into the void of time piece by piece until there's nothing left of myself.

Ngl, I had this video playing in the background and I thought this was a video essay about how the environments in the spongebob series created a creepy feeling when they’re empty (kinda like liminal spaces). I had to rewatch the video twice to realize that this isn’t even really a video essay about the spongebob series, but a review of a surreal/experimental indie band’s album that just so happened to have a spongebob theme attached to it.

For me, I think it mostly reflects on the Stuck In The Wringer episode. When Spongebob was drying himself off after a shower, he slipped on a bar of soap and unfortunately got himself stuck. His friend Patrick, an important character, tries to help him by using glue to "free him". The episode continues with Square pants struggling to live a normal day with the limited use of his arms. But it doesn't become easy on him, as he is forced to quit the Krusty Krab until the wringer was removed from Spongebob. Patrick tries to cheer him up by inviting him to the amusement park. However, it gets worse. Spongebob tries to survive the many obstacles like the swirling teacups that requires hands to hold on. It isn't long for him to be whipped out of the teacup by Patrick and crash to a damaging fall. It cuts to Square pants having a black eye and a sad description on his face. As Patrick comes to the shot, he attempts to give his friend an ice cream, but is rejected and is knocked out of his hand by his wringer. He has felt nothing but hatred on this trap (The Time Wasted In That Cursed Trap). Spongebob snaps at Patrick and hurts his feelings. He cry's and runs to the distance (My Past Friend Who Has Given Up On Me). The towns fish are enraged by his actions, and tells him that his wringer is getting in the way of his heart (My Heart Rips Another Time). It is at this moment, that Spongebob is in his house, alone, with the TV on. His mind is in a broken and depressed state and is not exactly in the right place (Mind Washing Away Slowly Like Sand). He tries to be happy and joyful, but sadness overtakes those expressions. He missed the days he was free and could take on anything (Dancing Is Sadly An Activity Of The Past). When Patrick breaks into his house, he notices the TV is on, but is playing the constant image and sound of static. It could be that the sound was drowning out the outside world, and Spongebob daydreams of the memories he had (That Dance With Her Was So Long Ago). Patrick, in a panic, tries snapping him out of it. He feels that he was the one how ruined his friend's life, and cries on the glue (Bitter Liquid, Release My Pain). The glue wears off, and releases Spongebob from the wringer. As expected, it has a happy ending and the show ends. But what if Patrick didn't save Spongebob? What would have happened if he remained depressed? Would he be able to feed himself or Gary? My theory is arguable, but that episode seems so fitting with the scene and how it plays out.

I always found the "backdrop" of spongebob creepy af, because of the animation and stuff it feels like bikini bottom is in the middle of a wasteland, the only living beings are in the town, and outside it's just vast emptiness, a few big rocks here and there, but it's just flat sand as far as the eye can see, it feels empty, isolating and it just freaks me out if I focus on it. A good example is the opening cards with the rocks and sand, I never saw it as small rocks in a little part, more like mountainous rocks scattered around a vast, empty and lifeless underwater desert. It just feels so empty and it freaks me out, but I find a weird comfort in the fear.

I would personally rephrase the title from "Familiar Emptiness" to "Empty Familiarity", that seems to me a more accurate description of the thesis. The emptiness isn't familiar, the emptiness wasn't there when we were kids watching the show, experiencing it in its prime. The familiarity itself, by contrast, has become more and more empty as Spongebob continues and slowly erodes over time

I won’t lie, just hearing 5 seconds of Everywhere at the End of Bikini Bottom broke me for a day or two. I was crying at work (something that doesn’t ever happen) and I barely even touched it. I knew what everywhere at the end of time was, and it was just awful thinking about it applied to SpongeBob. Thinking about the hours, even days of enjoyment brought by everyone’s beloved sea sponge. My beloved sea sponge. And it was just, heart wrenching, thinking about even the possibility of forgetting such a pillar of mine, and so many other people’s childhoods. And unlike Squidwards suicide which attempts to subvert the purity of SpongeBob by adding obviously unwholesome elements, the tragedy of this is the fact it’s just SpongeBob. The tragedy of forgetting such a foundation of my childhood.

It gives me a strange feeling of nostalgia and has always given me fear… makes me feel happy and afraid simultaneously. All the weird close ups and terrifying storylines/ underlying messages. The hook episode absolutely terrified me

Someone’s mind really looked at the first album cover of the original work (a torn box from each side with a blue tick tock tape on it) and somehow clicked that to the one from sponge bob….not only that, they where able to link it not because they both boxes but because the episode also had a deep imagination theme to it. But what kind of mind was listing to the original albums? How do you get into that kind of…..activity?subject? Humans are incredible. (My take as a atheist and way I had to explain it to my little bro about my grandpa)The mind is just a usb and sadly you never know why….but they can be corrupt so easy. From a flash drive to a SD card they could look totally fine….or maybe there is just a scratch and boom you lost everything. No software or app can bring it back. Yet some others can have a banged up usb they poor coffee on for fun and it’s just fine. You don’t know when, where or why, but it works for now…..hope they last as long as they can but when it’s gone all we can do is put it away and remember what was in it. Enjoyed and took care of my grandpa even though he didn’t remember my name. I was who ever he thought I was when ever he just wanted to hear a voice. Or I would improve and take over conversations. Rip to both him and my little bro I’ll one day sleep forever too.

In the episode “Spongehenge”, a weird wind starts blowing one day, causing spongebob’s holes to make a musical tone that attracts jellyfish, disrupting his life enough to drive him out of bikini bottom. After living in a cave for a while, he figures out that if he builds big stone replicas of himself in the wind, the jellyfish will stay away from him. When he successfully completes them, he returns to town, only to find the krusty krab long abandoned. Cut to 3000 years later, and a race of aliens are struggling to understand the origin of spongebob’s statues. And the strange wind is still blowing.

My mother used to tell me she dint liked spongebob, what a Karen, then again she said he was too dumb for her liking and always thought Sandy was the only good character, the only one with common sense, my mother never liked nonsense and lack of common sense as any generic mom, however there is more to it my mother never told me, whenever I ask her she only says she thinks spongebob is dumb, she never elaborates about it and tells me the generic "dont make me waste my words boy, if you are so bored read a book"

Watching this it makes me think of my parents and when they were my age they had the Simpsons and it’s really bonded to them like how SpongeBob has to this generation. Both shows have their similarities in that they both can be fairly upbeat but at the same time have their own dark and disturbing episodes and they both have their own humor with the Simpsons being much more mature. But the thing that strikes me the hardest is that they both have their same decline. My parents only watch the first 7 seasons of the Simpsons just as I’ll only watch the first 10 seasons of SpongeBob and anything after that just feels too oversaturated with color and gross potty humor (although tbh earlier seasons of SpongeBob weren’t afraid to dive into the crude humor but that wasn’t as often). As with the Simpsons it also has the same oversaturation of color but it also has phones and modern technology and the jokes and people who they are making fun of just don’t hit like they used to. This whole thing makes me think of if someone made Everything at The End of Springfield; a playlist of songs going into the slow decay and breakdown of the world of the Simpsons just as EATEOBB does.

SpongeBob is the most intellectual kids show imo. I never noticed the emptiness and despair that this brings though. I picked up on the more radicalizing narrative. SpongeBob is in a way critical of society in capitalism. From a Marxist analysis, the main characters fall into categories of class. SpongeBob: proletariat (unaware of bourgeois propaganda/indoctrination Squidward: proletariat (intellectual and thus more alienated) Mr Krabs: bourgeoisie/capitalist (greedy property owner exploiting SpongeBob and squidward) Plankton: petit bourgeoisie (actively trying to take over mr Krabs monopoly) I did not foresee that SpongeBob would be one of the key influences in my politics. Workers of the world unite!

I think this album is essentially a more modern version of EATEOT, specifically people who grew up watching these kinds of shows and media. It's like a realism punch in your gut that the nostalgia you had for this show is from place in your life that is much different now, and now you're in a time where you've had to move on. It's a sad and existential feeling, and the album perfectly represents it for me, because I can rewatch those episodes from the earlier seasons of the show however many times I like, I will still never truly reexperience that time in my early childhood where everything felt so right. It can sometimes feel like the jaunty and bouncy tunes I heard all the time in this show sound exactly like this album depicts it, deteriorated, aged, depressed. It's crazy how something as seemingly unimportant as sound quality can impact your memories as much as it has for me. Personally, that feeling of saddened nostalgia was most impactful for me, and that's gotta count Everywhere at the End of Bikini Bottom more than just a meme.

I watched Wendigoon’s dissection of the original and it really did mess with me because my greatest fear is losing my mind. This was a whole other story, hearing the music and seeing the scenes that I would wake up to, watch throughout the day, and even fall asleep to as a child disturbed and distorted makes me feel like I’m like 80 and trying to remember that bright yellow sponge that used to bring me joy, but just something about it is not quite right. Needless to say I won’t be sleeping tonight 🙃
