Tony indirectly told Ralphie to kill Jackie. That's what all the emphasis on "the important thing is that it happens in a TIMELY fashion" & lecturing him about being a captain & how it's important to make the necessary decisions was all about.

He was his usual guilt tripping self too. No matter what, don't blame yourself, you brought him up and schooled him the best you could, didn't you? Pretty much putting the blame on Ralph. Gave him the gun back. And you see after the first conversation, when Ralph leaves, he has that look on his face, like he knew exactly what tony was doing

3:40 Ralphie definitely is grimy, but one of the things Sopranos shows is that Mafioso often say the exact opposite of what they mean, especially when it comes to serious crimes like murder. Tony was actually telling Ralphie to kill him and kill him quickly, but he verbalized it in the opposite way. Maybe out of fear of wire taps and such. Yes, confusing and inefficient and people get accidentally killed, but thats how they do it. It happens several times throughout the show. Rewatch the scene where Tony talks to Ralph and watch his face and hands while he talks and youll see the mannerisms they use, subtle but so true to real life.

Exactly. I feel like I understand almost all of the subtext in the show the first time I saw it, but I can definitely see how people get confused, or miss stuff. I’ve had years to analyze the show and have seen all seasons at least 20 times, and I still pick up new details or innuendoes I didn’t notice before.

Ralphie was the one going to Tony trying to make it Tony's decision so he didn't have it on his conscience. Tony merely turned it back around on him. Jackie getting a pass was never up for debate or discussion after they killed Sunshine shot Furio and threatened Christopher. Jackie's friend even admitted they were with Ralphie to Chris and Gene before they executed him. It was his mess to clean up and he was just attempting to reposition what had to be done no matter what as "Tony's call", which Tony deflected effortlessly.

Hey. In reference to episode 2 No-Show. I think you guys might like to know what the meaning of No Show is. The Soprano Mob often refer to No-Shows and it's pretty important. No-Show stands for a "No-Show Job" These are jobs that were handed out to mob members by the unions they controlled. Usually, construction jobs awarded to mob members by construction companies that had union members. These jobs were called no shows because often the mobsters given these jobs didn't even bother to show up to pretend to work at them. But they still collected paychecks and received benefits like health insurance and retirement. The companies were pressured into handing out these jobs because they didn't want Union problems or violence from the unions that had people close to the mob leading them. (It's a long story how the mob got control of these Unions. It goes all the way back to before the 1920s.) OfCourse it was a great asset to have these no-show jobs. Bosses would often hand out these jobs to gangsters who had just got out of jail on parole and had to get a job to stay out of jail. The income they received from these jobs was legit as far as the IRS was concerned. So even though they did no work at these jobs they could justify having money to the feds by saying they were living off that job. And they could have good insurance for free. You often hear them on the show bargaining with each other about which captain or boss is going to get how many no show jobs from a big project or whatever.

Who doesn't love spaghetti? (or pasta in general) I just wish I didn't wake up like 2lbs heavier the next day every time I eat it. Pro tip - mix in some red pepper flakes into the sauce while it's cooking, gives it a nice little kick. Also, take out the pasta before it's done, strain it, and finish cooking it in the already heated up sauce. There's even an episode on this show where Ralphie explains it. It really does make a difference and helps the noodles absorb the sauce.

Tony knows Ralphie killed Jackie. That's what Tony wanted him to do. But Tony wasn't going to just come right out and tell him to. He told Ralphie it was his decision and to do what he felt was right but kept dropping hints that killing Jackie for offenses he committed was the only way. At the end of the day Tony wanted Jackie gone but wanted to be able to say to others and himself "I had nothing to do with it. That was Ralphies' call". Also, Ralphie setting it up to look like a drug deal in the projects gone bad was a way of keeping the whole "family" looking innocent of his death. They were being so careful with the matter out of respect for the fact that Jackie Jr. was the son of a very loved and respected boss.

I never noticed this after all these years until I saw someone point it out but the reason Tony held his meeting with the captains in the supply room behind the Bing instead of inside the Bing was because he wanted Ralphie to be there but Ralphie had been banned from ever going inside the Bing again after that incident with Tracie.

But there are more scenes coming up with Ralphie in the Bing. I can think of 2 major scenes off the top of my head. Honestly I think it was because Tony is often paranoid the Bing is bugged. Getting all the capos together when you know you’re gonna say incriminating things is very risky. Tony actually talked about “this thing of ours”... admitting the mafia exists. That would have gone a long way in convicting him if the feds had that recorded.

@@gacaptain I understand that. Part of my point is Tony has bouts of paranoia in the Bing. If Ralphie is banned then when was his ban lifted because he does appear there again? Even if he was “banned” the way Tony operates is rules ultimately don’t mean squat. He enforces them to suit him. This was a “coming to Jesus” meeting. I can understand why Tony would think maybe it’s time to mix it up a little & be a little extra careful. Stupid idea I know but Tony is not a deep thinker.

@@newjojosupercutsandmore2489 there have been more between 12 and 15 mobsters ranked from consigliere, underboss, acting boss, and boss whove retired. There has been only 1 (actual boss, not someone like ralph natale who was positively never a boss in the first place) actual boss whos flipped. Joe Messina, boss of the bonannos. Its literally a hard and fast rule except under special circumstances such as a boss having some type of serious issue like dementia etc. at which point thered be a reason to distrust him. The boss is the boss until he dies or willingly steps down. If a boss steps down, obviously he isnt going to choose to be a soldier or anything else. Hes going to step all the way down and retire which is why one thing youve never heard of is a boss choosing to demote himself. Stepping down as a boss means precisely that. Retiring. There are several reasons as to why a boss absolutely does have the option to retire. For one, no other family can tell a boss how to rule, or what decisions he can make regarding anything to do with his family. For 2, the government is generally not interested in trading down or even laterally. However, a boss retiring wouldnt effect that bosses decision to uphold omerta or not if he gets indicted later on. Theres a reason why made members who arent the boss have to ask for permission to retire from.... The boss of his family. Its the bosses decision alone as to whether or not he approves an underling to retire. Why would a boss be able to approve the retirement of an underling but not his own retirement? Its because bosses rarely want to retire. Costello made his own choice to retire rather than fight a war vs genevesse. Its not the commissions business nor there decision nor any boss of any other families decision as to whether another boss can retire or approve retirement of anyone in his family.

Many more great episodes here that are much better than that was. They can’t miss it but it wasn’t memorable either

@Knightowl1980 2 major issues. 1) Silvio Dante should've never been a part of the Johnny soprano crew. He was supposed to be a long time friend of Tony's. Ralphie even says that he was part of a crew with Tony and Silvio when they were teens, when he missed the poker game heist. 2) David Chase, I think, is too accustomed to TV. He tried to fit too much story into 1 movie. It could've been great, instead it was meh.

@@chasecatalano5699 I think it would have been a good mini series like 6-8 episodes.

This is the first season the shot after 9/11. You will notice, from now on, this show gets darker, and darker. The comedy is still there, but it hits you harder from now on

Tony is 100 steps ahead of everyone else, he already knows who's going to end up gone before everything is said and done and he will continue to use them until he sees it's time to put them out, he knows all these men personally before he became a boss and knows their weaknesses and lack of intelligence and drug problems etc . He will manipulate them for profit and sadistic fun but he also knows he has to stay one step ahead of the guy who will want his place as boss and that's what is giving him anxiety, worrying about getting wacked for the boss position, and or one of his borderline personality monsters making a mistake and getting them all put in jail for 60 yrs or more.
