The SLUGGISH Subaru (P0011, P0016, P0018)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This 2008 Subaru Outback with the spunky H6 engine has been having some sluggish performance problems. Check Engine light is on with VVT timing codes P0011, P0016, P0018.
Customer already took it to the dealership, which sold them on an entire timing chain job...
However the codes are STILL THERE!!

Good eye on the vvt timings between left and right data curves on the Verus. That was such a small perturbation of the data. I so appreciate you looking for the lesser problems first unlike the dealership that went to the timing chain first. Regarding the engine oil seeming over-full, I have one of these engines in a 2002 Outback. The dipstick level seems highly dependent on how level the surface is that the car is parked on. I figured it out after changing the oil in the garage, then ckecked it the next week in the diveway to find it over-full (the car was on a slight uphill slope in the garage, and a slight downhill outside).

Dorman strikes again! 50 years ago, the Dorman co. made some nice service parts kits, but then it was bought by marketing companies, not hard parts people. Every part's store had Dorman "cabinets," full of quality hard to find parts. I still have their round containers of cotter pins, carb clips, brass fittings, stuff a mechanic needed to repair cars. Now, they make junk.

8000 degrees Cumulative Angle is a method of checking for error, such that a moderate amount of large errors or a large amount of small errors can both trigger the fault condition. The computer measures the difference between desired and actual phase angle each revolution for a set amount of time and adds it all up. If the total doesn't get to 8000 over the period, no error is set. It's a pretty common way to detect errors with microcontrollers if it is expected a value is going to measure slightly off fairly regularly, but not consistently. Edit: it's effectively a crude method of noise cancellation on the measured value, requiring much less instruction cycles than "proper" noise cancellation.

I have only needed to replace oil pressure switches for the variable lift. I hope the customer requested a refund for repairs not needed at the dealer. The tech working on the car needs more training or needs to be confronted about his ethics.

Speaking of Dorman, the left side rear wheel speed sensor failed recently on my 2005 Dodge Magnum. I bought one from the dealer and I would bet lots of money that it is a Dorman. Dorman also supplies the MERCEDES conductor plate for the Mercedes tranmission in this car. One reason I know this is that I bought a Dorman conductor plate and it had Mercedes molded into the plasic in the plate in two places. Of course the conductor plate is a common failure in these trans.

When the EPA, the Sierra club and other environmental whacko groups decided they wanted zero emissions and lobbied Washington, then the worst president in the history of the United States Barry Hussain O and his Democrat party set the cafe standards to ridiculous proportions forcing the auto industry to create these POS engines and vehicles, planned obsolescence at it's finest, when you need to remove the engine to change a sparkalator plug, now they want to push everyone into electric cars, if you think the lockdowns were crazy I can envision a day when we all have electric vehicles and the powers that be decide no one needs to go out so they flip a switch, the signal goes through the satellites and boom, all EVs are instantly disabled and don't think it could happen and yes I'm proudly wearing my tin foil hat, thanks for asking.

lol , classic oil solenoids and a classic dorman disability ... First thing owners want do is quality oil and filter then 1 oem solenoid if don't want spend out and do swap over hoping it only one bad valve or go big and just do both valves and forget about it for 100+K or go profesionals if fault still present . Dealer and cheap parts tends leave you paying twice and if unlucky getting more faults than you started with . I think the valves been superseded couple times now so maybe better part ! Lucky you done wiper or that been motor and a module at the dealer lol . Fancy doing chain on that, did they replace cam gear assemblies !? hate see his bill on that either way :-) All worth it when punch that accelerator, the EZ engines are superb, shame didn't use the 3.0 in more models like the Forester, would of been far better had chain driven 6 cylinder over the head gasket and timing belt hassle of the 2.5 and fuel economy wise the 3.0 pretty much same . Good job ...

I work at the 2nd largest Auto Parts retailer. I am the one that checks the incoming part shipments 5x a week. Honestly, Literally, this 1 parts store receives hundreds of previously sold Dorman parts in. I also check off all returns going back to our DC. From a visual standpoint, Dorman is minimal. Our 1 wall, top to bottom, has 60' of full shelving of Dorman Parts. Set aside the returns and questionable quality, It is incredible how much is returned as new, yet visually obvious the part HAS been installed, or processed as a WARRANTY return, and returning to the manuf. We deal with most individual 2-3 man shops yet also several dealers. There is no difference. truly. Defending Dorman, nah, just my observations. Great Diagnostic video Ivan, as usual sir.
