INTAKE VVT CAMSHAFT SPROCKET REPLACEMENT :: 2014 SUBARU BRZ FA20 P0016 P0018 SCION FRS
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Pretty technical video for you guys this episode, please please please get a copy of the repair manual before attempting jobs like this. I go in and perform a repair for a known issue with these FA20 engines. For whatever reason these cam sprockets start to cause issues and throws cam/crank correlation codes. So I filmed and talked about the process of changing out these cam gears. It’s worth mentioning that other brands have had many issues with these variable valve timing gears since they’ve come into production. It’s nice to be able to have dynamic valve timing but it definitely comes at a cost when it needs to be repaired.

I think the cam jumped because you have to turn the number 2 bank before removing the chain. It's funny because the cams turn so easily on the cams that are in the base lobe position. I thought the locks were bad at first.
Great video! Thanks! It took me a weekend working off and on to get it done and finally got it to pass smog.

Nice work, glad it was helpful.
I assume you had to replace the ECM as well? From what I’ve heard the code gets burned into the ecm and is necessary to replace. Also did the triangles need to line up as well? What did it cost the customer to do this job? Thanks man
I have accident with the car and the radiator support hit the timing cover and broke the timing sensor and along with one bolt of sprocket is broke half inside sprocket and half outside how can the broken bolt be removed from the sprocket
Great video.! I have a question, I just picked up a 2014 Crosstrek, it is throwing code P000A only, I replaced the Cam shaft sensor(it was actuially chipped on the edge), then test drive and still got the code P000A, so I changed the oil and put in 0W20, and a the proper amount of SeaFoam(High Mileage blend) in the engine oil and the rest in a full tank of fuel, then replaced all 4 VVT Solenoids, just took for a ride, and threw the P000A code Again!!!. Any ideas, I mean the car has 200k miles and I dont think the oil was changed much for the last couple years, based on the black burnt inside the engine oil cap. I'm a little perplexed because I only get the P000A code, and everyone else, you included, gets multiple codes. Am I looking in the right spot for just getting this one code? Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Never ran into this issue but I did a quick search and it sounds like its a problem with the Bank 1 Intake OCV Solenoid. If you've replaced that and the problem is still persisting then the problem may be deeper with the sprocket or oil passages (sometimes the OCV solenoids have a screen filter which could get clogged). Or it could be an electrical issue (corrosion in connector or wiring issue) or Engine Control Module problem. I'm just making educated guesses here as it's hard to diagnose something without being able to test things.
Anyone know the sprocket part numbers for both LH,RH? I need all 4 but I’m having trouble finding the right ones thank you!
WHAT IS THE CODE THAT POPPED UP????
Where did you get the vvt camshaft gears, did you get a kit or you bought them all separately

Get all the parts for this job from the dealer separately.

The tab that pops off in the back, how do i keep it in? I also got a direct replacement but the spring and tube that go under that tab seal wont fit. The original had mpl on it and the replacement i got says exh

If the gear you bought says EXH on it then you have an exhaust cam gear. Intakes will say INT-RH/LH MPL on the face of the gear and have a MPL on the backside where the camshaft bolts in. Exhaust cam gears say EXH-RH/LH on the face of the gear and EXH on the backside.
wouldnt P0011 cause this issue too? my shop checked over solenoids on my fa20dit and wasnt the case and what they noticed was a “lazy” intake cam sprocket

Possibly but I believe that those banjo bolt filter things that feed the oil control solenoids are the culprit on that.
Hey man I got the same code p0018 I changed the sensors I was wondering if what your doing will help my problem

Can’t say for certain what your problem is exactly but most of the time if it’s not the sensor or solenoid then it’s going to be that VVT cam gear. There’s a technical service bulletin out from Subaru for this problem that goes through this in detail. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10160490-9999.pdf

@@SkillCollectors thank you I appreciate i toke it to Toyota they replaced and sensor but the problem didn’t go away so I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the timing chain cuz that what the guy at Toyota he said one of the gears might be off center but I don’t know where to get the parts for it yoy video is pretty good explaining so I think I could do it

@@kaboompanda7467 No problem, it is pretty technical so definitely try to source a service manual for the job.
When you diagnosed this did the cam sprocket sound loud?

I don't remember it making any abnormal noises.
And do you have an idea on how much a job like this cost

Just had mine done at a Subaru specialist shop. About $2600
How did you know which bank was bank 1. I have a p0016 and 0017. Both bank 1 Is that the passenger side or driver side. Thanks.
@SkillCollectors

Passenger side. For all multi-bank engines, determine the firing order then whichever cylinder contains cylinder 1 will be bank 1.

@kristofflutchman thanks very much for answering. Unfortunately I've gotta trash my forester xt. Bought a new VTT solenoid and put it in all four positions one at a time (before I knew which was bank 1 for sure) and still getting 0016 and 0017. At almost 250k miles it's not worth the labor cost (plus a new ecu) Thanks again. Looks like the new wrx this time around.

Want to keep it going so i'll end up doing the work just like seen in this video which THANK YOU @SkillCollectors @@Samlol23_drrich

E@@yooo46 It is an External Torx. Mine are labeled simply as E8, E10, E12 and so on. I have a big Cornwell Tools set with Torx and E-Torx in one box. Can't remember the size but 12 sounds about right.
