Have you ever thought the weapons of D&D 5e are a little lackluster? We agree! Join Bill as he gives an overview of what the D&D weapons are, how well they currently work, and how they could possibly be improved. This video focuses on the shortbow, a formative weapon that changed hunting and warfare across human history

My biggest addition when I looked into bows was the addition of a new property, inspired mostly by their warfare use: Arch-Fire When using this weapon, you may forgo using normal attacks to instead do an arching shot, allowing you to ignore any cover penalties between you and a target at the cost of firing disadvantage even in short range. This move cannot be used to bypass Full Cover the target is standing against, or in areas under GM discretion (tight underground areas for example)

Definitely need more arrow varients. I would say fire, poison, acid, and explosive arrows all fit the fantasy and make bows more interesting. Also, message and grappling arrows for utility.

A few corrections worth considering: while the Mongols and other Eurasian horse archers were known to sometimes carry a pair of bows into battle at a time, there is little to no evidence that this tended to be a pair of differently sized bows. In the particular case of Mongols, they would not adopt the larger Manchu bows until the 17th century. Realistically, the chief advantage of a shorter bow was that it could be more easily worn in a scabbard (see the funky looking quivers in some period artwork), ideal when overuse could lead a composite bow to delaminate in combat. Another thing to note is that, mechanically, there is nothing preventing a composite short bow from matching a long self-bow for range and power IRL. In actually fact, horn and sinew composites made Turkic bows more efficient in the way they released their energy, allowing them to usually outrange longer simpler designs. Fundamentally, I feel the in-game designations of the Shortbow and Longbow within DnD is an inadvertent inversion of the historical fantasy. The Shortbow, as a Basic Weapon, is framed as a rudimentary weapon for novices while the Longbow, a weapon that would benefit far less from the complex material science associated with composite bows is presented as the best choice for elite warriors. An alternative option would be to overhaul the entire bow family. Instead of a "Shortbow," players could take the "Self-Bow," a cheap hunting bow ideal for relative commoners; those seeking the "English Longbow" fantasy would then be able to take a "War Archer" feat, which would allow the Self-bow user to roll D10 damage in lieu of the basic D6. The Martial option would instead be the Composite Bow, which would retain the D10 damage with your boost in mounted combat (with no mention of size allowing it to be frames as either a Turkic-style short bow or Japanese daikyu, depending on preference). Crossbows, by contrast would be one of two things, IMO. On one hand, they might be a regular bow on a tiller: this wouldn't really be better than its counterpart in terms of damage or range; it would just be another bow with the Loaded/Reload property tacked on. Alternatively, the increased relative damage of either weapon would come at the cost of range, as Medieval crossbows were less efficient at propelling their heavy bolts than contemporary bows.

They should have just gotten rid off the short bow and replace it with hunting bow and long bow into war bows. This way you can include composite bows into both. Composite war bow or composite hunting bow. or weak plain wooden hunting bow etc...

Alternatively you could make a "Bow Expert" feat that lets you wield a shield, light weapon, or spell focus at the same time as a shortbow and lets you make opportunity attacks against people who enter a range of 30 feet of you with a bow. Gives you more wiggle room and gives off that speedy quickdraw feel without being overbearing or letting you just decide to do with with crossbows instead.

alternatively a "bow expert" feat could make it so that spells and class features that would normally only apply to strength-based melee attacks can be applied to bows, and that bows can be fired using strength. it would allow smites, brutal criticals, rage damage bonuses, and reckless attacks to be made using bows.

shortbows are a preferable ranged weapon for monks that aren't playing the way of the kensei subclass, especially if the optional dedicated weapon rules are allowed at the table.
