The often forgotten advantage: it is a walking stick, you can walk into towns and castles without the guards confiscating it as a martial/lethal weapon.

The explanation/history about the quarterstaff reminded me of what my da wanted to train us in, stick fighting, cause most melee weapons are some form of stick, and in the case of being in a hostile area with no modern weaponry, there's usually always access to wood, and in tirn, a stick.

As a DM, I would be fine giving a +1 to A/C to melee attacks when using a quarterstaff as a two-handed weapon. It has excellent defensive capabilities.

I am using the quarterstaff as a ranger weapon. It makes sense to me that he would have this mores than a sword which needs sharpening, oiling, sheathing etc. It's something that can be acquired for free, or cheaply purchased Lightweight. Customizable. It can be ground to armpit, ground to shoulder, ground to head or taller. If it breaks its a shorter staff. Now you have two. Somewhat easily distributed amongst the party so everyone can use one. Imagine an entire party with quarterstaves. Useful as a tool. 3 tied together can hold up a stew pot for the party. Can tote two buckets of water per stick for the party. Good for use as a tent pole. With attacks you get two from both ends. Good reach especially with the thrust. I like the trip idea. Can throw it as a spear. Can carry a long one and a half sized one. Long one for wilderness large areas. Half that size for in town. Good for fighting against groups. I can hit more than one at a time.

So there's an easy way to fix the polearm mastery feat with the quarterstaff. Make that second attack deal 1d4 and if you gain the feat it increases the die to 1d6 or 1d8 if you want. That way it doesn't rob the feat of anything it just makes the Staff better.

Or landing both hits triggers a combo attack effect of some kind. Like 1-2-Stunned is you.

TBH many things that just used to state a weapon turns the base damage into x damage (like Shileighleh) I've personally considered it just 'increase damage die by 1 magnitude' an elegant workaround. This works both for buffing existing weapons and any add-on weapons you may slip in later that could qualify.

European nobility when swords were being controlled evolved into using a walking stick with a lead knob or core. Though I guess that is a club.

So i have two reasons to use the quarterstaff over the spear, the shillelagh cantrip and crusher feat. Shillelagh gives the quarterstaff that d8 damage in one hand letting you use a shield and letting it benefit from the dueling fighting style making your damage a d8+2 before your modifiers and giving you a +2 to ac from the shield. Then paired it with the crusher feat giving you additional battle feild control by pushing creatures around with hit. Stack on the polearm master feat for an additional bonus action attack that also benefits from dueling and you easily out pace a similar build that uses a spear instead.

As an ancient 1E DM, the Quarterstaff is the perfect weapon for Clerics. They can't use a spear, and the stave gives them weapon length, good damage, and a versatile tool beyond just a weapon.

If I was going to make the quarterstaff more unique I'd really lean into it's versatility as a weapon. Essentially when using I would make it so when you use it one handed it has the Reach Property to represent the extra length from holding it near one of the ends, and when you use it two handed you have the option of a trip attack as an action to represent the greater control from holding it nearer to it's balance point. Then if you wanted to invest into polearm master it'd gives you even more versatility. I know this would add more complexity to the weapon which is kind of antithetical to the weapons in DnD but I always thought the game designers overcorrected when streamlining the weapons and we need to bring back some of that complexity. (Not too much of it, just a little bit.)

I'd split it into quarter staff and short staff. I have trained a little with quarter staff. There's no way you can use a 2.5m weapon one handed. But it does keep people away from you. So I'd give it reach or an AC bonus against one opponent A short staff at 1.8m would be as the current quarter staff The big advantage of both is you can carry them in places weapons aren't allowed and you can make new ones quickly and easily

Since these weapons aren't currently in 5e, I don't have plans to cover them in this series. They may pop up in a future series idea I'm working on though!

@@altrolerpg Well, If you need Dire Flail material, that terrible CW Batwoman show had someone using an anime-sized version and Shadiversity and Skallagrim tackled it. I think.
