I think what would help weapons out in 5e a lot is having more robust categories in addition to weapon properties and damage types. Like having a category for axes, hammers, polearms and swords and then defining specific traits to those categories and feats designed for them too.

A thing I feel is worth noting: "Versatile" martial weapons fit a fairly different narrative niche when compared to "versatile" simple weapons. Where the latter is mainly used to maximizes damage dice, Martial characters have access to heavy weapons (ie: Greataxes) which offer better damage by comparison. I think narratively, the "Battleaxe" refers specifically to the relatively short one-handed axes of shield bearers and cavaliers, with the "versatile" property allowing the weapon to function as a Greataxe for Small creatures. As far as a "cleave-through" capability goes, I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense for an axe. Axe blades are fairly narrow and, in many cases, a hack into a character would be stopped once the haft makes contact with the body. A better standout capability would, in theory, be superior armor penetration. In previous episodes, I mentioned separating AC into "Evasion" and "Damage Reduction" and axes, owing to their high inertia/momentum, would have an easier time carving though light armor than a sword. By contrast, swords would be nimbler due to their heavier hilt assemblies, offering better defensive capabilities (ie: better Evasion)

That or a maiming or sunder ability yeah. The traditional poetic descriptor is "deep biting", so I feel like it should focus on devastating blows on one foe
