    Sylvester will always be my Doctor. His era is the most ambitious, progressive and entertaining of the whole classic series. He is just the perfect amalgamation of all the other doctors - he has Patrick's clownishness, Tom's alienness, Jon's activeness etc.

    Pretty sure it was unintentional but 7’s first few lines being him listing of things he still has to do is pretty fitting seeing as tidying up unfinished business would become a driving motivation in stuff like Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis, Battlefield, The Curse of Fenric, and more

    Fun fact, this entire season was put together in a matter of months. That is, from 'decision to produce it and the decision to recast The Doctor' to 'airing date in its entirety' was quite literally a couple of months. I believe 2-3, would need to double check. It really wasn't a long enough production time. Thus, it was only truly in Sylvester's second season, where they had time to properly plan, that they knew what to do with the character.

    And as the script editor at the time will be sure to tell you, he wasn’t happy with this script nor the writer’s resistance to including any of his changes. They’d been signed on before he got the script editor job so there was very little he could do about that. The later three stories, though still far from perfect (especially in his eyes) are pretty good or just plain good, and I even find this one has it’s charms

  • @marquisofcarrabass

    It doesn't help that this script was written for Colin, who was supposed to regenerate at the end; but he (understandably) refused to do it, and the writers (Pip and Jane Baker) were generally ill-disposed towards doing any rewrites of their material. So the regeneration scene was cobbled together at the last minute, and McCoy finds himself trying to fumble through dialogue written for a much more bombastic character than he wanted to play.

    Also interesting to watch how the classic Doctors alternated between comedians or comic actors who wanted to play the role absolutely straight (1, 3, 5 and 7), and serious character actors who wanted to emphasise the comedy (2, 4, 6 and 8).

    With only vague memories of watching Peter and Colin and only listening to Tom Baker's narration of "Genesis of the Daleks" and his reading of "State of Decay", this 7th incarnation of the Doctor and this very story are where my Doctor Who journey really began. At conventions Sylvester McCoy often in jest says that he "killed Doctor Who". For me, as a 7-year old at the time, he really brought Doctor Who to life and here I am, near 41-years old, still watching and reading and listening to this legend of a show 35-years later and ready to say Happy 60th Anniversary in November 2023! To Sylvester and Bonnie Langford, Sophie Aldred, Terry Molloy, Angela Bruce, Simon Williams, Pamela Salem, Karen Gledhill, Jessica Martin and the late greats Nicholas Courtney, Anthony Ainley, and Kate O'Mara I say a very big Thank You!

    I'd love to see the Rani on the current DW. I never realized he mentions "strange matter" when he sees the asteroid. Did they know the theory of strange matter back when they filmed this? Or was it just a coincidence. Luckily, strange matter/quarks is still theoretical -- hoping we never actually discover or, worse yet, CREATE it. Yikes. If you don't know what it is, google it. It's terrifying.

  • @alansmithee419

    @alansmithee419

    2 жыл бұрын

    strange quarks are very much real. But yes, I believe strange matter itself is only theoretical. As for other terrifying end-of-everything scenarios in physics: false vacuum decay. This stems from the idea that the higgs field may be positive everywhere (as opposed to all other fields which are 0 everywhere except where there are particles). It's possible that this is a metastable state and that the higgs field could decay into its ground state at any moment. This would trigger the sorrounding area to also decay, and so on in a bubble expanding at the speed of light, releasing a huge amount of energy (and possibly changing some laws of physics to a form incompatible with earth life), killing everything in its path. Basically, unlike with strange matter, you would get no warning. At all.

  • @alansmithee419

    @alansmithee419

    2 жыл бұрын

    Another comment because I just looked it up and it's even more insane than I thought, apparantly other fields than just higgs can collapse and the effects can be completely absurd (from wikipedia): "The effects could range from complete cessation of existing fundamental forces, elementary particles and structures comprising them, to subtle change in some cosmological parameters, mostly depending on potential difference between true and false vacuum. Some false vacuum decay scenarios are compatible with survival of structures like galaxies and stars or even biological life, while others involve the full destruction of baryonic matter or even immediate gravitational collapse of the universe."

    It's difficult to work when one knows management is trying to kill off your show, but hasn't the stones to do it. That was the situation Sylvester McCoy, Bonnie Langford and later Sophie Aldred faced. McCoy looks, um, interesting in Colin Baker's old costume; he says only toward the end did he finally get his Doctor to be what he wanted it to be. And then it was gone for six years, when he was offed in San Francisco.

    That first beginning part when he wakes up, when I first saw it, is over acted and I thought embarrassing for the Dr. Who character. But, after a few shows I realized Sylvester was really good. I think Colon Baker was a bit to overacted. Sort of a pompous character. But there were some shows of him that were very good. I love all the old shows more than the new ones. As far as companions, I liked all of them. I liked most Harry Sullivan, back starting with Tom Baker. He had a likeable smart comical side that didn't show an overacting character. I wonder how many fans of the old shows saw "THE DINOSAURS"?? The master was in that one. I only saw that aired about two times. Luckily I recorded it to DVD. Lots of good characters in the old shows through the years. Very sad many are no longer with us. And the ones that are, have aged so much. Thankfully these shows are rebroadcasted on many networks. I have recorded most episodes of the old shows.

    The Rani is a weird villain for me. For starters, it's her name, the Rani, like the Doctor and the Master she has a title, unlike Romana, Borusa and Chancellor Goth. Secondly, we already had a timelord who reminded me of her, Azmael from the Twin Dilemma, but it's understandable why he didn't return and why they wouldn't have gotten another actor. Thirdly, she feels like a female master, she could have appeared in Survival and Michelle Gomez could have played her. Fourthly, she deserved better outside the writing of Pip&Jane Baker which is why she should've been played by Michelle Gomez. Also, I just want to know, does anyone know where Karen Clegg(Sarn) is now?

  • @edwinsoto6932

    @edwinsoto6932

    She is definitely not a female Master. The Master is proudly evil (and delights in it) and seeks conquest and domination; the Rani is a merely amoral scientist, only interested in her scientific experiments. The Master is best friends with the Doctor and is obsessed with them, usually trying to involve them in their plots; the Rani is largely indifferent toward the Doctor, her response to the "hatred" accusation applies just as well to the Doctor. In "Survival", the Rani would have been trying to use the Cheetah People as test subjects and it is difficult to imagine her struggling - let alone giving in - to animalistic instinct, unlike the Master, who is well suited to that theme.

    Sylvester McCoy and Kate O'Mara absolutely carry this. Unfortunately Andrew Cartmel was left with unfinished scripts to quickly tie up for this season, but luckily Sylvester McCoy shines through and the cast makes various aspects work. On the bright side, this season is followed by the two best seasons of Doctor Who. Then after that the VNAs and Big Finish continued the themes from those seasons very well. 7 is definitely my favourite Doctor.

    We almost got Ken Campbell in this role, but script editor Andrew Cartmell described his audition as "too disturbing." Given the much darker direction in which Cartmell steered the series over the next three years, you have to wonder what Campbell did that was so disturbing - did he crack open a Dalek and eat it like it was a boiled egg?

    Please forgive me as I like Sylvester's characterisatiuon over all but his beginning few minutes I always thought was both appaulling - terrible dialogue script and the characterisation (even post generation) is sheer embarrassing. This to me made Colin's run look superior. The special effects of the transkucent space capture balls were cool though as was the monster but other than that this was not a great start. Fortunateky IMO things got better. You would not show this to an adult by means of introduction to DW. A six year old would like it though.

    Lovable and talented actor that Sylvester McCoy is, this was just all so dreadful: the music, the fashions, the creature design -- just so regrettably the worst of the 80s. This clip reminds me why I stopped watching and after a watch thru a few years back I don't feel I missed much. Not a surprise at all that the show was cancelled as the production just drove it into a brick wall or perhaps more correctly they ran it out of gas. Too bad they couldn't have rebooted it with better writers and creative team. Ugh.

    Oh my god -- Doctor Who used to be pretty good, but the actors just kept getting worse, after the last two Doctors, the lady (didn't watch her after three shows so don't remember her name) and the Old man before her (it was only his companion that kept him going), the three/four Doctors before them were pretty good. Completely lost my interests after the Women Doctor Who started -- not sure it was her acting or just the writers that sucked. Anyway -- This Doctor is really bad, just worse then the last two even, I just can't believe they found an actor that sucks sooo bad. Restarted watching some of the older shows, but Not even interested in the last couple of seasons.
