Compared to the "normal" scales, the Victorinox PLUS scales have a shaft for the ballpoint pen on the backside scale. This PLUS scales also have another slot. But the entrance to this slot is closed...at least on the most of the models. The only models were this slot is open are those models with a screen on the front scale. I will show you how to open this slot and how I use it.

I think since it’s not going to look completely flawless anyway, then rather than shortening the toothpick from the head end, I would cut it from the tip end and reshape the tip, preserving the original head and avoiding the need for glue to recreate it, and then just file it to be rounded evenly on both sides. Also, cutting from the tip end gives the option to reshape it however you want, possibly making it into something besides a toothpick. Maybe a small plastic scraper to use on surfaces where you don’t want a metal tip to mar it up. I read once where someone used the toothpick to adjust dip switches on an electronic device. Maybe reshape the tip for better use with that.

Great video, Felix! I didn't even know the third slot was there until I watched this. I took this one step further. I cut off the end of the vertical edges where the pen slot and the original toothpick slot meet. This allows me to slide in a toothpick from a 58mm Swiss Army Knife without having to shorten it. The 58mm toothpick just touches the pen.

Hi Felix ! I found another way to carry the firefly AND the toothpick, with no modification of the toothpick. There's enough place inside the SECOND scale to carve a slot for the toothpick, parallel to the other slot. Then you can use the third and hidden slot of the other scale to carry a second pair of tweezers, with pointed ends of course ! Best regards.

No need to cut to shorten, then glue the head back on the 91mm model toothpick. Just buy a pack of shorter toothpicks for the 58mm Victorinox models. They're JUST short enough to fit in the hidden slot, whereas the angled tip of the toothpick rests over the center of the diameter of the pen in the pen slot. Just the plastic 'V' rail in the scale needs to be carved out because it gets in the way of the tip of the toothpick. Then file to round the head of the toothpick to fit the contour of the round scale.
This is a great idea. I've been looking at those slots and thinking about taking a plastic coffee stir straw and turning that into a tiny storage container to fit in one of those slots, and inside the straw I wanted to fill it with potassium permanganate for extreme emergency water treatment. Just seal up the straw and forget it as the PP has an indefinite shelf life, and that is enough PP to treat dozens of gallons of water in a very tiny package. I bet you could even fill the straw with part of vaseline soaked cotton ball for fire starting along with that ferro rod. Keep up the great work.
I’ve seen that extra slot before and wondered what it was for especially since it was closed off. Thanks for explaining they used it for models with displays on the opposite side. I love firefly Ferro rods and this mod let’s you have all the tools! Now they are Plus-Plus scales or Plus+ or ++ 😁

I have added the Firefly ferro stick to all of my SAK’s, they are great!
After watching Felix I was inspired to try a slight variation, by continuing a cut further into the scale, increasing the length of the channel until it starts to cross into the pen channel. This lets you put in a normal 58mm size toothpick without modifications. It doesn't interfere with the pen at all, and saves the cutting and gluing of the 91mm size toothpick.

Wow, this is *precisely* the modification I attempted last weekend and will try again now that the work week has ended! I initially used the small blade to open up the slot, but found the metal saw is much better, as you demonstrated here. I do also use my toothpick slot for the Firefly firestarter. And I also found that I had to shorten the toothpick, but I just snipped off the tip with scissors before rounding the head of the toothpick with a file. One suggestion: the scale scuffs easily, so this time I'll apply masking tape to it.
@william_alba
4 жыл бұрын
By the way, I shortened a *short* toothpick (the one for the 58mm knives and the SwissCard). The head of the short toothpick is symmetric, so it's easier to shape to match the curvature of the slot opening. However, if you snip the tip, the new working end of the toothpick is thicker, because you're working with the former shaft. Right now I myself actually prefer this stronger tip.
@william_alba
4 жыл бұрын
One more note: Tortoise Gear, the people who make the Firefly firestarter, have a Kickstarter campaign going on right now. They're making a FireAnt firestarter and Helix tinder, both of thread into the corkscrew. I'm actually more excited about the Helix tinder, because I already have a Firefly and like the Victorinox mini screwdriver, but the FireAnt is certainly clever too.

holy crap, thats an amazing hack!!!!! i will put a small tweezer in there just for the fun of it, it will look cool with 3 tools tucked away in there. What I have is a cyber tool SAK. Its special cause on the back side (same side that has the hidden slot), the Cross badge is instead of the other side. The reason for this is because its got something long printed on that side (sequoia heritage) requested by some company to victorinox to do. I plan to take the front out and replace with another scale that traditionally will have the cross badge on it. It will become one unique SAK.
