The Revolutionary Planetary Freecoaster - New Discoveries!!!

This new freecoaster hub may be even better than we thought!!!
Spinning back tire tricks with pedal pressure are possible?!?!
While riding it my friend @TrevorWatring did two 270 tire taps in a row over a hip using pedal pressure and absolutely no brakes!!
Trevor is an amazing flatland rider who used to ride the Ezra freecoaster. The Free Night Planetary Coaster is inspired by the Ezra design so naturally he was a perfect person to try this hub out.
This hub could change BMX freecoaster hubs FOREVER!
The internals of the Planetary Freecoaster from Free Night are similar to hubs weve seen before, but have one giant difference; planetary gearing.
This allows the hub to be a cassette when moving forward, then immediately go into freecoaster mode with NO disengagement.
This is completely unlike and other freecoaster hub available.

    Okay I didn't see this video until now. I am a pedal pressure fan through and through, even when I thought I'd have to give that up I still wanted this hub, now I want it even more seeing how to manipulate certain pedal pressure tricks. This is amazing. Thank you so much for all the coverage. Never thought I'd find a freecoaster I like.

    He back pedal a bit before he got got a forward pedal pressure. I guess. Looking forward the flatland part of it. The test look simple but actually it's pretty scary. You go guys. 💪🏾🙂

    I think that when he did the tap with pressure the wheel slowed down enough and he peddled hard enough for it to engage or the wheel stopped completely somehow and that’s why it engaged and gave pedal pressure so my conclusion is if you go slow enough and peddle hard enough it will apply pressure but if you don’t put enough you will slam to the floor lol

    This is my theory. Ok so when you did one of the first videos, you spun the hub in reverse and the sprocket was spining in the opposite direction. But if it’s on the bike the chain should stop the sprocket from spinning backwards. So when the wheel goes backwards the chain isn’t moving so the pawls should drop out and disconnect. So if you can keep pressure on the pawls before the wheel moves backwards on a tap. The pawls should remain in the engaged position. Maybe. I could kind of do this with the blind hub but it was not reliable and when it didn’t do what was expected it usually didn’t end well. Also over time with rough engagement I believe it wore out the pawls. Hope this makes sense. You could probably test it by holding down pedal and roll bike backwards to see if the pedals will backpedal until you release pressure. He is so smooth that he probably just did his normal thing to get it to work but once it fails to engage you brain has a hard time allowing you to fully comment in the same way. What do I know though. I can do any of this stuff. Haha

    When comparing both tries (pedal pressure vs no pressure), I noticed he was able to pivot on the back wheel, without having to use the brake or pedal pressure to keep the front end up, rolling a tiny bit backwards, and just as the wheel started moving forward, that's the exact moment he applied the pressure, so that's why he was able to do it, in that split second the wheel had just started moving forward! On all the other attempts he tried pedaling as the bike was still moving backwards, so still having freecoster slack, get it?

    This hub doesn’t need disengaged though and any time you land fakie its a coaster and we don’t know how to control it yet l so it’s a little different

  • @jesse-dg8yx
    @jesse-dg8yx5 жыл бұрын

    8:13 do you forget you have a brake? just push on the brake caliper more importantly what if the split second before the back wheel touches the floor and changes direction, put a little pressure to make it engage, then when it touches the floor and goes reverse its still stuck engaged

    5:00 - To me it looked like he was able to push more w/ the tire tap than he was in the flat ground move, he didn't have enough time to put enough pedal pressure to engage the clutch.... Since he rolled backwards further doing the flat ground spin, it disengaged the pedals just like the slow fakie pedal forward move. I think he needs to engage the pedals in midair before the tire can roll anywhere... But I'm not sure, I don't have the hub and I'm not as familiar w/ it as you are. 😁 Edit: 3:27 - After watching and re-watching I've noticed how hard he engaged the pedal pressure here and I feel like he might have preset it to engage and as soon as he fakied it came "undone"...

    I think it might be time to open the hub and see how the clutch is holding up since there's been a decent amount of riding on the hub. Maybe wear is what is causing it to be inconsistent.

    It's not build to engage if the wheel is rolling backwards at all at any time. Watching the video I think there was no angagement at all. Maybe the force was flowing through him, connecting him with the universe... :)

    What it seems like to me is the first tire tap he did with pedal pressure he kinda turned past 90 degrees so the back wheel rolled forward and then it engaged. As for the 270 tap on the hip he rolled back and as soon as the back wheel rolled forward the pedal pressure was there. Then Trevor went back to try tire tap and didn't over hang the front wheel over coping like the first time when the wheel rolled forward. Trying it again he just went straight 90 degree and more of a stall than a smooth movement. It's all about the wheel moving forward like you've stated in your other videos. Figure out how to keep the wheel going forward into a tire tap, maybe lean back when get engagement to suck up forward energy and immediately hop in. I'm so curious, feel like I need one ASAP.

    It definitely looks like he does something different with his feet when I compare the video on flat ground to the one on the quarter pipe. Looks like he pedals backwards when doing it flat just a little bit, and on the ramp he keeps pedal pressure on it

    I think you have to land with consistent and high enough pressure. If you imagine the internals the triangle piece that holds the pawls up will drop immediately as the hub rolls back but if the pawl is already engaged the friction between the pawl and the tooth will keep it up even with the triangle piece moved out of the way. If you relieve pedal pressure the pawl spring will overcome the friction and it will drop. In his attempts that work it looks like he landed with enough pressure to hold it(he landed with weight on his front foot) then back pedaled (unknowingly freecoasted) and then pedaled forward just as the wheel came to a stop (about 270 in his spin). To figure out how much weight you need you could try to 180 out of the quarter and go immediately into a wheelie back towards the quarter.

    If my theory is correct riding without the pawl springs or with lighter springs will make wheel tap spins easier. Or if you don’t mind risking damage you could remove one or two pawls as it would turn all of your pedal pressure into force that helps prevent the pawl from slipping on the tooth. Right now that force is divided by 3.

  • @Brant_Moore

    You might be right. But the thing is that you have to crank pretty hard to catch the hub up and get the pawl raised. Seems like it could really hurt the hub

  • @motofreak2772

    @motofreak2772

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Brant_Moore the pawl will already be up while you are in the air only when you hit the ground will the hub start to change direction. But it has to come to a stop before it changes direction so that’s your opportunity to land on the pedal. I wouldn’t recommend trying to catch the hub up if you are already rolling because you’d have to pedal really fast with no resistance. Sounds like a broken knee to me haha.

    Ok i think it has to do with him back pedaling when he landed in 180 he kinda went with the back tire with the pedals.. and when he retired it looks like he was just pushing forward on the pedals leaving the tire going back words and him engaging the free coaster by pushing forwards..idk definitely interesting

    I think that the question lies on the rotation of the wheel so to get pedal pressure your should be cranking right before your backwheel hits the surface, just an idea, but should be close

  • @94machu

    Maybe try preloading the hub by doing like an 8th of an ET in the air before landing in the tap so the tire and cranks are both moving forward before it hits the ground? If not then the other comments about back-then-forward pedaling seem to be on to something.

  • @Brant_Moore

    @Brant_Moore

    The thing about that is that pedaling a tiny bit before landing is how I make abubacas not engage the hub. If I don’t do that or twitch my feet when I land, they engage every time. So I would think pedaling before landing on this wouldn’t be any different. It’s so strange

    i know im very late, but the explanation is very simple, when you do 270 tap, and if you pedal down right before wheel lands and rolls backwards, you will have normal engagement, if it starts rolling backwards before you pedal down, it wont.
