What's the limitations of the engagement/coasting? If you have a slight bit of pedal force does it coast? Can you force the wheel backwards with a slight bit of pedal pressure (hand)? When it's coasting backwards is there any way to make it engage? What happens if the wheel is moving backwards the tiniest tiniest bit and you try to pedal? What happens if the wheel spins backwards then stops spinning, does it engage? Does it need to spin forward for engagement to happen? Try find it's limits and try and break the rules of it do something different to find out exactly what this hub can do and what it's limitations are

Nice vid. I would like to see a comparison with this and a KHE internal type freecoaster as the control. So you can see about disengaging the clutch when setting up for a trick. You were sorta doing it already when you gave one last 1/8th of a crank when approaching the ramp. 20% crew!

I run the odyssey clutch hub .. I don't disengage before a trick for street use. Just naturally land a little back foot heavy and that's enough to disengage it plus I get to use pedal pressure.. The freenight hub kinda feels iffy with the tiny gears with delicate teeth But hey , People had their doubts for the clutch and It's plastic internals and the profile z coaster when they first came out. Now people swear by them.. I think the targeted consumers for this hub will love it after a while . might need a v2 .

Why wouldn't Free Night break-in the hub before shipping it? who want's to deal with that when changing to a new hub. Although mechanically it is quite clever, having a product where you have to tell the user to not do something (especially in a sport like freestyle BMX) is just asking for trouble. The last thing you want to be thinking about when doing a trick is "don't pedal forward when coasting!" cos shit happens and sometimes your body's instinct is to pedal forward. I hope that this product develops in the near future so that these things are improved.

  • @Brant_Moore

the reason why this is no good is because it doesnt have slack, if you pedal down while goin backwards it engages, this used to fuck up all of my fakie tricks when i had a cassette/coaster switchable hub that kept enganging cause the slack wasnt enough.
