The Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist // Bishop Barron at 2020 Religious Education Congress

For my keynote talk at the 2020 L.A. Religious Education Congress, I spoke about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Vatican II says that the Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. However, recent polls show a widespread misunderstanding of the Eucharist and a massive failure in communicating the doctrine of the Real Presence. It is time for all of us-Catholic catechists, educators, and evangelists-to pick up our game about this absolutely essential sacrament!

I am a Protestant and have been all my life since I was baptized in the Episcopalian Church. I watched and intently listened to Bishop Barron's entire sermon on Christ in the Eucharist. This was the first time I have ever fully understood this doctrine, and it has given me a lot to consider and pray about. Thank you, Bishop.

I went to a Catholic mass today for the first time after denying for 5 years. I’ve been Protestant and after a deep study of the early church fathers I have decided to convert. I saw the Eucharist and felt unworthy to even look at Him so I left. Pray for me. I need to go to confession and start the RIC something. I was salivating at first before the weight of my sin fell on me. This is the real deal. God bless you all and may The One Tue God bless you with Eternal Life.

My heart swelled not with pride but with the love of God. I became God's cheerleader for one year after receiving for the first time. I believe and receive. Praise God. ❤️

If already a Christian, one merely needs to confess any new sins they committed. No further graces by keeping the eucharist are needed. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:9). Follow Man’s traditions or God’s Word.

I was away from the Church for 2 years and suddenly I had the desire to receive the Holy Communion, but I put off my conversion and I felt ill, I again desired to receive the Holy Communion, to be healed. So I went to confession and received Jesus, and Jesus gave life in me. Many walk away from Him, but He's always there, ready for us and forgiving without making us feel fearful. How ungrateful we are. Forgive us Lord, for our offenses.

I finished my R.C.I.A classes and was hoping and excited to complete my sacraments right after this year’s Easter vigil but then this pandemic happened , and all RICA rituals were suspended; our parish has to wait till our Archdiocese allows them to be resumed and still iam waiting. In my heart I know God has plans for me and it’s His will for me to keep waiting till He says so and I will wait for as long as He needs me to. Every mass during communion I asked God to touch my sisters and brother’s hearts for them to realize what an HONOR and GIFT it is to partake with Christ in our most holy sacrament , the Eucharist, his blood and body is the most precious gift Christ has left us, pray for each other that we realize this in every mass we attend, 😌 🙏 . Pray for me to be strong and accept God’s will for me to trust Him that he has great plans for me and so I still must keep waiting , thanks.

As a convert to the precious Catholic Faith, St John 6 was my key. I cannot deny that at every Mass we receive the Body, Blood, soul & divinity of Jesus. When many left him Jesus didn’t say ‘Hey guys come back, you misunderstood me, I only meant it represents my body and blood!” No! Jesus said “This IS my body, this IS my blood” and “for my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink” and the key for me “Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have NO life within you”. I am honoured and love being a member of the One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic Church! Catholic by grace! Catholic by faith!

Amen brother. Exodus 12:8 is another text that solidify this teaching for me. God commanded the Israelite to eat the Passover lamb as they leave for the promised land, to me, this event points forward to Jesus the God-man, our Passover/Paschal lamb, who also insisted that we eat His flesh as we embark for our own exodus to our promised land, Rev 21. Like other teachings, the Catholic Church nails this key one also.

I actually prayed about this just hours before this was uploaded. Before i prayed i read the bible where Jesus says "my flesh is true food, my blood is true drink." I felt so happy reading those verses that i prayed deeply about it. I'm still trying to get confirmed catholic because I've just been raised spiritual but i was baptized Presbyterian. I've gone back and forth between churches like the methodist church and the episcopal church. But that whole time i was so attracted to the catholic church that i got my grandpa who was raised catholic to take me to the catholic church. You're probably thinking why my parents didn't take me. Well both my parents but mostly my dad have always been very anti catholic, my mom would become attracted to the church sometimes and that would make me happy but she always ended up dismissing it because she was raised catholic by my grandpa but my grandpa never knew much about the church, he made it seem so easy to go to hell and you have to go to confession every time you think about anything bad. These beliefs my grandpa taught her made her very anxious and she would constantly go to confession whenever she had the opportunity to until she ended up becoming depressed because of her anxiousness. She eventually left church in general and basically had a distant belief in God, like she thought he was there but maybe not. She still is afraid of that happening and i try to tell her about what the church truly believes but she will argue with me about it and i don't want to argue with her of course so i just drop it. Anyways this has become a bit of a rant so I'm gonna end it here. Basically my message was if you want an answer from God, ask him and he will answer.

Sounds like your mother developed a serious case of anxiety-producing scruplosity. St. Ignatius of Loyola had a similar experience but eventually realized that the cause of his extreme anxiety could not be God, but an evil spirit. This discernment helped him to overcome his scrupulosity and find rest in God's infinite mercy. Consider researching the discernment of spirits: www.ignatianspirituality.com/making-good-decisions/discernment-of-spirits/

@Stephanie Hautala - I'll save you some time: The Bible is a fantasy-fiction book with talking trees, talking animals, zombies, dragons, mythical global flooding and a fuck-ton of immoral passages. For example, this is what the Bible teaches about slavery. See if you agree with any of it: Ephesians 6:5 “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ.” Leviticus 25: 44-46 “You may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you […] You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance.” Exodus 21:20 “If a man beats his male or female slave with a club and the slave dies as a result, the owner must be punished. If, however, he survives a day or two, no vengeance shall be taken for he (the slave) is his property” Exodus 21:2 “If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years, but on the seventh shall go out as a free man without payment” Exodus 21:7 “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are” 1 Peter 2:18 “Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the cruel.”

@@bobtosi9346 you're brainwashed hard if you think slavery isn't slavery. Fact is, the old testament's a piece of shit. The only context you need is that slavery was so common back then it was too hard for the immoral Bible authors to conceive a world without slavery. So instead they said ya, you can keep a male slave for 6 years, female slaves forever (because you forcibly impregnate them), and you're allowed to beat your slave. But you don't give a shit what the Bible says. You don't care that the Bible says to take babies and smash their heads on rocks (Psalms 137:9). You don't care the Bible says rape victims must marry the rapist: Deut. 22:28-29 “If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her. You're so brainwashed you don't realize the Bible is an immoral fantasy-fiction book with talking trees, talking animals, zombies, flood myths, dragons, witches, sorceresses, 950 yr old people, etc. TLDR: You're completely wrong and very brainwashed.

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and that the Mass is Calvary offered in an un-bloody manner. Growing up as a Jew, we celebrated Pesach, (Passover) each year, just as the Last Supper was a celebration of the Passover. In the Passover we are taught by the Rabbis from the times before Jesus, that by observing the Seder, (the order of the Passover ritual) we can no longer say, I am remembering what God did in that place for my forefathers, but we must say, I am remembering what God has done for me. That to participate in this act almost three thousand years ago by other people being saved out of Egypt, I too am a participant. God makes the Exodus present here for me, and those who are with me. The term which Jesus used in the Greek, often translated as in memory of is, Anmensis. It can mean to remember something from the past, but in the context of the Seder, and also in the Mass, it means to make a past event present now. So when I am at Mass (and I prefer the Byzantine or Traditional Latin Mass over the Ordinary Form, but as the Mass is the action of Christ through His priesthood, all Masses are of equal and infinite value, as they are the same sacrifice as Calvary) I know that God is allowing us to step out of time, and recline at the Seder which was the Last Supper, to stand or rather kneel at Calvary, and to witness the resurrected Jesus. The manner may differ, the date on my calendar may differ, but by God's grace, I am there, He brings it to me.

That being, if all I am consuming at Mass is bread, then Mass is not that important. Mass becomes just a group of people coming together to hear a man talk and give them bread. Hopefully as Mass ends we feel better about ourselves and go about our week. I could just stay home and watch Mass on TV and at the appointed time eat a piece of bread. My wife and I are watching Mass daily on your KZread channel. At the end is a prayer because of the Corona virus, we cannot be there to receive the sacrament. I repeated the prayer but didn't give it much thought. Until now. Praise be to God! Your Excellency Bishop Baron I'm very happy to have joined your channel. I had a nosebleeding problem that I realized when I was at tender age of 5 as I went to school grade 1 in 1979. I would go to church and kept attracted to the Eucharist celebrated by the Mill Hill Missionaries who evangelized our Diocese in Kenya among the pastoralist community (Maasai). It was not untill I joined seminary and in the year before my Deaconate Ordination I talked to Jesus in the Eucharist asking Him that if He calls me to serve on the Altar as His unworthy servant He may heal me and Never allow me to spill a drop of blood through nosebleeding if I ever celebrated Mass some day. This is because He Himself poured own Blood once and for all for our salvation and there was nobody to be saved by my nosebleeding! I GOT HEALED BY THE HOUR! Today I'm a Priest for 18 years and I received the Grace to pray 🙏 over such people that may have the same ailment that I had and many have healed completely. I celebrated mass daily during the pandemic in private with three servants at my place of appointment and we see Christ's Presence each day. There's NO GREATER MIRACLE above the EUCHARIST. HE IS CHRIST HIMSELF AMONG US, REAL, PRESENT, ALIVE AND FULL GLORY OF THE LIVING GOD! Some thieves broke into one of the Parishes in Kenya and took a cyborium with Eucharist! They threw the cuborium near a forest where cows went to graze every day. The cows early morning after seeing the Eucharist scattered just miraculously stopped and surrounded the place. Neighbours asked where their cows are going without someone leading them and it is a protestant christian who realized why the cows looked stranded and said kindly let's call the Catholics to come and collect This because they are the ones who always eat it! Certainly, a priest was called and found the cows looking shocked and he took the Eucharist untrodden upon and the cows watched in amazement. The whole neighborhood got alerted about it and realized that no harm was done by the thieves to the Priests the previous night and when they were arrested they not only returned what they stole but also aknowledged that something very special struck them when they carried away the Cyborium from the tebernacle for they first thought it was a money safe! To cut the long story short, thank you Bishop Barron very much and we are together in this ministry!

Thank for making us know the fate of the stolen cyborium and its CONTENTS. It's a pity that our people, and particularly the media, ignored the great miracle that took place here when the cows recognised their Creator and were shocked at how badly He was treated. From both a spiritual and physical point of view, this was the greater story here. The media, the clergy and all who witnessed this miracle should have shouted to the whole so that all people hear of the of God in the holy Eucharest.

Where does the sunburst used to hold the host originate? What does it represent? If you say, it's from the Bible, I can surely tell you that it is not found in there. Nor does it represent the represent God's Word incarnate or otherwise. The bible forbids using images of persons or any celestial objects to associate them with God. (Exodus 20:4-5, Deuteronomy 12:4-5, 1st John 5:21) Even the rosaries are from the pagan Hindus and Muslims. None are biblical. Roman Catholicism is a hybrid composition of Roman pantheism, polytheism, imperialism, with Jewish and Christian overtones. When a person exchanges the truth for a lie, that person has allowed himself or herself to be blinded to the one and only True and living God, which is Jesus. 13. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gp1-2MuBk7iYk9o.html

Stefano Paratella - It seems to me that you have 'converted' to being a Roman Catholic, NOT a Christian. To convert to 'Christ' by the new birth is what you need. You will become a 'new creation' in Christ Jesus (2 Corin. ch. 5 v 17). You will have your sins forgiven, once and for all. (Hebrews ch. 1 plus 9, 10). You will have peace with God (Romans ch. 5). You will be made the 'righteousness of God' in Christ (2 Corin. ch 5 v 21). There are so many things you can know, present tense, with assurance which the Roman Catholic faith does not give you. The Roman Catholic system does NOT speak for God, the Bible does, read it for yourself.

@Ellen C Hi Ellen C, I have only come across your comment and hence the delay in replying. Whether your claims about the formation of the Bible are true or not is not really relevant to me at this moment. The Church at Rome in the early days was definitely a strong church and was taught by the apostle Paul as we have his letter in our New Testament. However, even in those early days, the apostles were warning of the false teachers who were creeping into the church, causing division and denying the teaching of the apostle Paul especially. There is no doubt that there were many good 'spiritual' men in those days who under the guidance of the Holy Spirit made many sound decisions in relation to the make up of the Bible which we use. Where I totally disagree with your understanding is when we look at what the church of Rome has developed into a Popish system. The apostle Peter was never a Pope and as far as Peter being the rock which Christ built His church upon, that is just utter nonsense, as Peter himself makes it clear in his epistles about christians being 'living stones' builded together as a habitation of God by the Spirit. The rock is the fact that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our faith is built on that truth which was revealed to Peter by God the Father. Popery is a man made system, formed by men for men and for their benefit financially. There is no such as thing as apostolic succession as it is totally unnecessary as we have the complete scriptures and the Holy Spirit to teach us. We do not need a priesthood as the Lord Jesus Christ is our great High Priest and our advocate with the Father. We have direct access to God the Father at the throne of grace through the precious shed blood of our Lord Jesus. Take the time to examine your hierarchy in the Popish system and you will see nothing but hypocrisy, corruption, sexual immorality, ritual, formalism and absolutely no room for the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ because of Mary worship, and exaltation of so=called 'saints'. Forgive me if I come over as harsh, but it is a serious situation, with Popery deceiving millions to a lost eternity.

The Real Presence is at the heart of the Mystery of Faith. It's a mystery, our connection with things real but unseen, in this case with Christ himself. When we eat Jesus' flesh and drink his blood, we literally become one with Jesus. What greater grace is there than that? Everyone read "Mysterium Fidei". That is the best and clearest statement on all this.

I've enjoyed listening to Father Baron for years now, most often find myself in agreement with him, always learn from him, yet this remains a sticking point for me. That certainly holds true in this case, and while this history, in brief, is interesting, that history seems to me to be passionate, resolute, even definitive, but remains a tautology, affir.ations of affirmations. For me, it hinges on the biblical exegesis, and I'm not settled there.

Sterling Crowne by your own definition. The soul of Jesuschrist is in His own blood, and He gave His own blood in the altar which is the cross and every time we remember on our on altars the Saint Sacrifice, to rescue each of our souls, because His blood is pays the debt of each soul. That was Lev 17,11. And if you are not perfect like God himself you can not enter heaven itself and the way to do that is to do what He teaches which one of those is to celebrate the Divine Sacrament, the Saint Sacrifice, the Holy Mass. Mat 5,19_20 Because Jesuschrist gives the perfect form to the Law because He is. Mat 5, 17

I’m Catholic from the Philppines. I had my secondary schooling in Catholic convent school. I know that the Holy Eucharist is a sacrament but I don’t remember that we were told of the real presence of Jesus in the sacrament. I’m a natural reader but it’s only last year that I csme across videos and some short posts on Soc-Med about it . But this video is such a welcome catechism on the subject. His explanation, while theological and Biblical is conveyed to me in duch a compellingly convincing manner especially the last part on How Jesus and his ordained priests of the Catholic Church by apostolic succession transforms the bread & winne to his body & blood by his Word. “In d beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the word was God”. It’s Jesus Divine Word that has a creative, transformative power that makes transubstantiation possible. Thank you Bishop Barron. You see many Catholics do not know that there is total healing during Mass. When the body and blood of Christ is raised at Consecration you should touch where ever that is paining you and ask for divine healing. God will do it. I have always done that to be healed of any ailment. There is power in the Holy Eucharist. Try it with faith and see it happen. When Christ died on the Cross He gave us everything leaving nothing but Himself for us in the Eucharist. If you are sick or know anyone that is sick please go to Mass, if you haven't been to confession do so and receive Communion. Remember to touch the part of the body that is ailing you during Consceration when the body and blood of Christ is raised and ask Jesus the Saviour to Save and heal you! It is so wonderful to witness this healing miracle like I always do at Mass. God bless you!

We speak of how 70% of Catholics don't believe in the Real Presence and that happened from The Lax of The Shepherds of the church. when we knelt and received our Lord that meant something, When a crumb from the bread should fall it was caught and treated with reverence for the true presence that was there .Once you removed the reverence and what is when you lost the true presence . And once you allowed unconsecrated hands to handle the host and people just shuffled up and had the host plopped in their hands without reverence that is how people started to lose the sense of the Real Presencr it is all of these things together is how people lost their reverence... and as a catechist we teach the children these things but they are still just children when we teach them but they lose it as an adult because of what's going on in the church... Total lack of reverence, all the talking in church before Mass never took place back in the 50s and 60s, as a child I knew something awesome was taking place within the church wasn't quite sure of the real presence of Jesus but I knew something awesome was taking place and we have removed the awesomeness.... And when Shepherds turn their back on Catholics like Nancy Pelosi Joe Biden Governor Cuomo they do a disservice to the real presence of Jesus.. you lack of concern for their soul in which you will all be held accountable for remaining silent and not caring for their souls.... And that is a large reason why people do not believe in the real presence... Why they don't even believe in God if they think that abortion and killing innocent children is okay????? If a person has a relationship with God they could never believe that that's okay and if the Bishops and Priests are not teaching Gods children HIS truth then they all lost... You don't need a degree in theology to understand who God is and that God is present in the Eucharist the Holy Spirit will teach you but if you refuse to listen to the Holy Spirit then you'll never know.. I guess it all comes down from arrogance which stems from pride,. One says to themselves I will not believe!!! Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord... And today everybody has to be politically correct even our Shepherds and they will not use God's truth which is wisdom to teach truth... Scripture says if you eat my body and blood unworthily you bring down condemnation on yourself... Just read scripture what scripture is not taught because they don't want to hurt anybody's feelings!!!! but they would rather see their soul go to hell for all eternity rather than hurt their feelings and if and I say if Pope Francis told Joe Biden he can continue to receive because he is a good Catholic , and he told Nancy Pelosi that he respects her ,,what he did was to tell the whole world do whatever you want it's all okay!!! Really this is why there are so many Lax Catholics... And it's up to the Bishops, Cardinals ,Pope to change it bring people back to the word of God... Let Us return to God's truth and not people's personal truth..🙏

And I know that we cannot judge another person's soul at the time of death because we do not know if they will repent but to blatantly stand up for abortion and The Taking of innocent life ... That action we can certainly judge that it does not come from God but from the evil one... Truth is truth, murder is murder the fifth commandment Thou shalt not kill you can't get any plainer than that!! It's only four words ..Thou shalt not kill and if the hierarchy can dance around that . them we have a big problem...
