Beauty in the Catholic Tradition

Friends, at the 2022 Good News Conference, I spoke on the evangelical power of beauty in the Catholic tradition. True beauty leads by steady steps if we allow its power to work on us and lead us to the ultimate source of beauty, Christ. Show the Sistine Chapel or Chartres Cathedral; show someone how to read “Brideshead Revisited,” the stories of Flannery O’Connor, the poetry of T.S. Eliot; listen to Beethoven’s “Seventh Symphony.” Show the great tradition of beauty. It’s not as threatening; it draws people in.

You are Absolutely right Bishop Barron, going to Southern Baptist Churches with my Grandma as a child, at 17yrs old walking into St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Glendale, Ohio I was mesmerized at the Beauty and the Choir up in the loft sounded like Angels surrounding us all. That by the way was 60 years ago in March 2023. Needless to say I HAVE NEVER LEFT ,WITHIN 6MO LATER I WAS BAPTIZED AND RECEIVED MY FIRST COMMUNION. Over 20 years ago I seen your Catholicism Series and I have grown so much in my Love of God, Church and my Faith. Thank you so very much and I listen to you ALWAYS AND FOREVER GRATEFUL. Let it be known to all: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

I'm a lifetime Roman Catholic but follow the Eastern Rite Ukrainian Catholic Church, and greatly admire the Patriarch His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk. The beauty of the churches (cerkva), the astonishing beauty of the altar area representing the image of heaven. The breathtaking wall of icons (Iconostasis) depicting the story of Salvation. Most importantly, the priest/celebrant faces the Tabernacle not the congregation. The chants and hymns of the priest, deacon(s), and choir can move me to tears, especially the prayerful singing of the Our Father. It saddens me, and many Latin Rite Catholics to reflect on the beauty we have discarded, removing lovely statues, defacing towering altars, banishing Latin hymns and services, all in the name of Ecumenism. The statistics of practicing RC parishioners tells us just how successful these changes were.. One more comment on the Ukrainian Catholic Church, which is under the auspices of the Vatican; why is the Patriarch HB Sviatoslav not addressed properly by the Latin hierarchy? The entire world honors him as Patriarch with the exception of RC clergy, who insist on referring to him as Major Archbishop! A title that is not only insulting, but also non-existent. Could it be that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with its greater numbers is more politically important??

Yes, I do agree that the Traditional Latin Mass is more reverent, but both styles are much more beautiful than any protestant "service." I never really stayed from Catholicism in all my 66 years.

The beauty of Catholic practices and houses of worship is what has caused me to rebuke and repent of my atheism and rebellion against God and to accept Christ as my savior. The Holy Spirit was present when my best friend showed me the Basilica Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia. I was moved by the astounding beauty of the architecture and art, which brings rightful glory to God. The Holy Spirit was there with us that day and it never left me. I walked into that cathedral an atheist, and walked out a burdgeoning Christian. The Catholic catechisms and practices steadily draw me to them. Perhaps one day I will enter RCIA and be confirmed on the most holy day of Easter.

Never in today's world would a church such as this be built. I think of the catholics of that time and the sacrifices made for construction of this church. It is the only Basilica in Maine. The ultimate beauty transcends generations of Catholics . We all share God's overwhelming love and maybe the beauty of the stain glass and the architecture is our gift back to God as well as to each other through the years.

It reminds me of Bishop Barron's Catholicism (video) series, where he travels the world showing the beauty in Catholic places, Churches and more. I especially like his comment about baseball as a young kids; I knew what he was going to say because my memory is much the same (only Fenway Park not Tiger Stadium) -- my Dad and Grandfather taking me and then, coming out to the seats and seeing the beautiful green grass and bright lights (and the "Green Monster"); it was just overwhelming and something that I never forgot -- beauty -- that keeps baseball special for me even to this day.

Beauty is what brought me back to the Faith after many years of being an Atheist. I live in the Minneapolis area and for months I had the strong urge to go the Basilica of Saint Mary here. I couldn’t explain it since I was an Atheist and didn’t usually care about things like that. I can only say it was the Holy Spirit in retrospect. But I visited it and the immense beauty immediately changed me. It was actually quite uncomfortable at first because I felt that the state I was in was inadequate but it gave me a strong desire to come back to God and the Catholic Faith, and that’s what I did. I debated this stuff intellectually all the time but what really was the spark was beauty, it truly is a powerful thing.

Hello, if you are not indifferent, you can read. Once I was a believer, I believed in forgiveness, I was ruled by hope and I wanted a better life for myself. Do not think that I wanted huge wealth or unlimited power. I dreamed of starting a family, a decent home and a good, favorable and honest life. But once I lost faith, when a very painful blow came into my life from a person who was close to me, I eventually forgave her and let go, but my faith is dead. No matter how hard I try, after what I've experienced, I can't believe. Thanks to everyone who read.

I'm so sorry that you were so deeply hurt. I understand that pain can alter our judgment and decisions in life, but please reflect on the fact that all of us are challenged many times, by injustice, humiliation, grief, and a plethora of pain. It's imperative that we call on God the Almighty in these times, because He knows all, and has counted and measured your pain. Regardless of your present status, He's waiting patiently and lovingly for your return. Remember the Scripture story of the prodigal son? How many of us have related to it, now and through the ages! I'm certain that your faith isn't extinguished, it is simply sleeping, and Jesus will enlighten it again, all it takes is to humbly pray, "Jesus help me!" He can give you a whole new life. I pray that He does.

I remember in the 1970’s priests who with GREAT GLEE destroyed everything beautiful in the churches. It’s really an adolescent bratty impulse to reject all that has come before. It’s time we grow up and form a mature perspective and appreciate the beauty of our glorious heritage.

Makes me think of Bishop Gerety of New Jersey. In the 1970s he single handedly chain sawed the high altars out of the great churches on the east coast. Reducing them to the ascetic of prison gymnasiums. He was applauded for his modern zeal.

As a youth I went through a very difficult time. I spent many hours sitting alone in our church, that was when they were always open. It was there I met Jesus Christ and again He gave me life. Years later, in my mid teens, it was decided that they would rebuild our church. They took away all that was beatiful and moving and replaced it with a modern building. It so disturbed me that I stopped going to church and I did not return until after we started our family at another church. It does matter. We need to return to the Beauty of our church, our mass, our music. It all matters. Praise God. Bless you Bishop Barron. 🙏🏼🕊🌹💗

Today I listened to Beethoven's 7th Symphony for the first time in half a century--I might as well say for the first time. I recognized the music from the second movement, which is repeated again towards the end. It is moving beyond words. No wonder Beethoven is thought to be the greatest composer of all time. It is the music that gets to me more than anything except the beauty of a woman. Whether it is "subjective feeling" or "emoting"--I don't care. I think the experience of beauty brings me closer to my higher power.

I love it that you can compare the beauty of the rose window to the FORM of something like a golf swing or the first time i saw the beauty of a friend who would catch a fish off a small row boat in perfect form… i used to think..he was in his milieu … i saw this beauty although in every wayy he was a sort of ragged type of simple fisherman.

Christ gave us pure truth and pure beauty. Our traditions and great cathedrals have so much emotionally moving beauty. How sad that the years following Vatican ll the modernists insisted upon striping our sanctuaries of the beauty of our traditions. The parish to which I belong has a sanctuary built with the “ simplicity” motifs. We have a gorgeous crucifix upon the alter but no other obvious ornamentation. Our new pastor took the beauty of the simplicity and added two statues-one on each side of Our Blessed Lady and St. Joseph. What a difference it made. Over and over I hear people say “now I feel as though I am in a Catholic Church”. There is a sense of increased reverence . Bishop Barren so aptly relayed how God’s beauty can and does effect our souls. I hope that more pastors will embrace the traditional and the sacred when determining the architecture of religious buildings.
